Westminstenders: A vote too far?

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
Theresa May reminds MPs of the Jan 21st deadline - if government has not presented its withdrawal agreement by this date, powers for MPs to influence next steps kick in.

What a shambles of a mess. We'll all suffer in the end because of this shambles.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 16:07

We'll all suffer in the end because of this shamble

And we're not now ?

SusanWalker · 10/12/2018 16:07

£1 now equals €1.10

Important clarification from the Speaker that there are 2 options for the Govt to choose from to pull the vote - either we all get a vote today to stop the debate or the govt can unilaterally pull it. He says the former option is the more courteous.

So

  1. Everyone in the commons vote today over whether tomorrow’s vote should be stopped

Or

  1. The government unilaterally (is that every Tory in the cabinet or just TM) pulls it?

Can someone explain 2. to me?!

Faisal Islam@faisalislam
Opposition MP reminds me that “never forget that Chamberlain in 1940 fell on the adjournment motion not on an issue of substance”

But Government looks likely to ignore the Speaker and use procedure to defer vote without vote... MPs shouting “when’s the vote?”

I do wonder whether we’ll get to vote deadline of Jan 21 and PM will turn round and say to MPs: “Alright then, have your vote, and if you don’t back my deal, no deal it is”. What do they do then?

Kevin Schofield@polhomeeditor
DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds warns Theresa May that unless she changes the Withdrawal Agreement it will be voted down. But she can’t change the Withdrawal Agreement, so it will be voted down whenever that vote happens.

Just had an interesting chat with a very young BT engineer here to fix my phoneline, I'm in North Wales and his father is a farmer and the reason he now works for BT is because of the worry of Brexit, without EU money its costs a farmer in this area about £1000 to be a farmer, who knows whats gonna happen to people like this lads family if this shit show continues

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 16:11

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
PM just made it clear the meaningful vote may not be tabled again until January 21. That’s a further 6 week delay, on a timetable that is already painfully tight to deliver all Brexit legislation in time for March 29. A50 extension ever more likely now.

Oh my goodness. Bercow vs May. I don't think I can look. Someone pass me a cushion. Shock

GD12 · 10/12/2018 16:13

Of course, DG.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/12/2018 16:15

Don’t get me wrong, DGRosetti, I disagree with it. I just didn’t think I’d see it until it was too late.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 16:15

I do think this all but kills Grieve III off.

Unless May goes and the next pm takes us on a softer path altogether.

@BiglyBadgers my in-laws turned up at that moment. It was a tough call. I definitely needed a spoonful of peanut butter from the jar.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 16:20

What would I give to be a fly on the wall when Theresa has to explain all this to her Madge.

BiglyBadgers · 10/12/2018 16:20

This is the pound against the dollar today.

So the speech is going well then...

Ha! Yes. Betty must be sick to the back teeth of it all.

Alwaysbekind2014 · 10/12/2018 16:28

She does look tired 😂I was sat up last night not being able to sleep and it did cross my mind that she can’t be getting any sleep with all this shot going on
I think now it’s just about her ego rather than the country.

Holidayshopping · 10/12/2018 16:29

She is coming across as pretty flustered-her voice is all wobbly!

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 16:30

Prof Jeff Kenner @ProfJeffKenner

And the only reason May HAS to report to Parlt by 21 Jan is because of the Grieve amendment. Has to be a vote on confidence now and a switch of position by @uklabour to back PV

WifeofDarth · 10/12/2018 16:34

I've been lurking for a long time, but reading it all. Never thought I'd be this gripped to BBC Parliament. PMK

Loletta · 10/12/2018 16:34

What is she...a dictator?? Angry
She must be stopped. Someone stop her please.

IsobelKarev · 10/12/2018 16:35

So, if I understand correctly (and thanks to those who have patiently explained) the situation is that we currently have a no deal Brexit scheduled unless the government gets its act together? Every EU leader has said no to any further changes. In particular, the messages coming from Ireland seem very clear - the backstop is needed. Yet it is also clear that the backstop is the real sticking point for the DUP and many brexiteers.

The delay to January seems like brinkmanship to me.

Am I alone in thinking "well duh, the question of the Irish border was always going to be the sticking point"?

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 16:36

Nicola Sturgeon @NicolaSturgeon

So @JeremyCorbyn- if Labour, as official opposition, lodges motion of no confidence in this incompetent government tomorrow, @theSNP will support & we can then work together to give people the chance to stop Brexit in another vote. This shambles can’t go on - so how about it?
