Westminstenders: A vote too far?

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 09:16

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

Interesting isn't it, how the little people are told "there's only one poll that matters" when it comes to being told to fuck off.

But when the PM takes soundings, it's perfectly valid.

I really hope whatever we end up with will be worth the scorched earth of democracy it's leaving behind.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:49

Does anyone still believe the world isn't pissing itself laughing at the UK Rocky Horror Show

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:51

Beth Rigby @bethrigby
So... the only thing that my sources around May were sure of heading into this week as they wobbled over the #MeaningfulVote was this: she would not resign. She ploughs on, delivering a very determined statement in the Commons, despite it all.

Oh crap. Is she putting No Deal back on the table?

Fuck

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:55

Tom Harwood @tomhfh
Bercow says communing debate and cancelling vote is "premature and inconclusive"

Uhoh...

OP posts:
GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:55

Holy shit, is Bercow going for a vote?!

jasjas1973 · 10/12/2018 15:55

Wow Go Bercow!

TokyoSushi · 10/12/2018 15:55
Shock
RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:55

Jane Merrick @janemerrick23
Uh-oh. Bercow is going for it: “deeply discourteous” for govt to pull a vote on a debate after 164 MPs have spoken. Theresa May could be killed off by Erskine May.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2018 15:55

I think we may be heading into a we are totally stuffed scenario.

FestiveForestieraNoel · 10/12/2018 15:56

I luffs Ken Clarke 😍

jasjas1973 · 10/12/2018 15:57

What a speaker to stand up to the Government and put decency and procedure ahead of Mays arrogance.

Greensleeves · 10/12/2018 15:57

Holy fuck Shock

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:57

Ian Dunt @iandunt
He says two ways to challenge: First, and preferable, is for minister to move at outset of debate for debate to be adjourned. This gives House opportunity to express its view in a vote.

Wow. Bercow is seriously doing something here.

He says ministers can also act unilaterally. Doesn't seem to be able to stop got doing this, but is going to make it as embarrassing as possible for them to do it. "Allowing House to have its say on this matter would be the right and obvious course to take."

"Let us see if those who have assured this House and the public over and over and over again that this supremely important vote is going to take place tomorrow without fail is going to rise to the occasion."

Wow (not sure what's going on yet, but wow)

Robert Peston @peston
Speaker absolutely damning of government plan to shelve the vote - in effect calls on PM to reconsider

OP posts:
DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 15:58

If that's true about Bercow, he may just have entered history, along with

May it please your majesty, I have neither eyes to see, nor tongue to speak, in this place, but as the house is pleased to direct me, whose servant I am here; and I humbly ask pardon that I cannot give any other answer to what your majesty is pleased to demand of me

Faisal Islam@faisalislam
My my the Speaker is now basically forcing the Government to put the procedural delaying of vote to a Commons vote...which it might lose. “let’s see if they wish to rise to the occasion"

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2018 15:59

Got near back to back meetings, but I did catch a snippit of what the speaker said.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2018 15:59

Cummon people listen to what Bercow said.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 16:00

Alex Wickham@alexwickham
Govt source responds to Bercow insisting they will not give the House a vote on delaying the vote

Can Bercow call contempt of Parliament if they don't?!!!

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 16:02

Paul Waugh @paulwaugh
Bercow essentially warning May to put delay to a vote rather than Govt make unilateral decision to delay.
Does highlight once again how executive can dominate the executive.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/12/2018 16:02

Wasn’t expecting this from the Speaker.

DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 16:03

The question is now What's the point of a speaker ? if he can be overruled by the government ?

I wonder where the legally trained MPs are now - surely they are aware of the nature of the separation of powers.

Or has the UK simply become totalitarian overnight ? Not with a bang, but a wimp(er).

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 16:04

Luiciana Berger @ Luicianaberger
Important clarification from the Speaker that there are 2 options for the Govt to choose from to pull the vote - either we all get a vote today to stop the debate or the govt can unilaterally pull it. He says the former option is the more courteous.

I was due to speak in the debate tomorrow. There are over a 100 colleagues that have already contributed. We wait to see what path they choose. The whole thing is a farce.

(Rtb whispers: I don't think anyone including journos have a clue what is going on)

DGRossetti · 10/12/2018 16:04

Wasn’t expecting this from the Speaker.

Maybe he's seen the future if he doesn't step in ? Basically parliament becomes an afterthought to government decisions. Something a nasty war was fought over.
