Westminstenders: A vote too far?

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 09:16

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

Just now, from Swinford at the Torygraph:

Steven Swinford
(@Steven_Swinford)
NEW

PM was pressed at Cabinet to give a date for the vote.

She wouldn't, instead saying only that it will be held by January 21st - the latest possible date.

Eurosceptics fear she will delay vote until last possible moment - meaning there's only time for her deal or no deal

December 10, 2018

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:34

Does anyone else think this looks like runnj g the clock down to a no deal?

prettybird · 10/12/2018 15:34

Only 3 minutes late Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:35

In practice, unless the EU really want this clusterfuck to continue - and unanimously grant us an extension -

it looks like the PM (whoever is in the hot seat by then) either Revokes at the last minute or we crash out with No Deal ... and prove conclusively we are a country of lemmings

Maybe the EU will take pity on us ?
We'd have to show that an extension would produce something more than an extension of dither

iirc, they said they'd grant 3 weeks for the HoC / govt to decide a real plan of action, then up to 6 months more if need be to carry it out

Hasenstein · 10/12/2018 15:36

meaning there's only time for her deal or no deal

Is this more confusing use of the term "no deal"? Does it mean "no Brexit" or a crash out?

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:36

The laughter in the HOC at her!

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:37

Hasen, no deal means crash out.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:37

In response to Alex Wickham tweet above

Douglas Carswell @DouglasCarswell
Leave May in office. Kill Brexit

I think the calculation here is about revocation. The ERG don't trust May not to revoke. Thus they will want someone as PM they do trust will never revoke. And the situation a delay to the vote seems to be provoking is a straight remain or no deal situation.

Thus ousting May becomes their last resort...

No there yet...

... But.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:38

No Deal = Brexit crash out, with no transition and no deal for what happens next

The question illustrates one of the problems:
this whole saga was always far too complex for a referendum

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:38

If they fail to oust her the first time, they have to wait 12 months for the next ....

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:39

I think she's serious from this that it's her deal or crash out. Jesus.

prettybird · 10/12/2018 15:40

None of the content in May's statement is new Hmm

No hint of her resigning.

She really is a zombie. She can't be killed because she is already dead Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:40

Looks like a time when we really didn't need this "bloody stubborn woman" - which she is proud of being -
but a clever, flexible one

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 15:40

James Forsyth @jgforsyth
Am told five Cabinet Ministers backed ‘indicative vote’ on conference call earlier. Other Cabinet Ministers suspect this is driven by a desire to shift to a softer Brexit

Hmmmm...

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:42

This is beyond insane and she's deluded. Dear God.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:42

Yup, foiled

C'mon, where's an Opposition motion of NC ?

Isabel Hardman@IsabelHardman

European Research Group currently discussing whether is possible to oppose the delay - sources tell me its advice is currently government doesn’t need to call a vote on the delay

Apileofballyhoo · 10/12/2018 15:43

It's the first speech I've ever heard from her where she's not fudging.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:44

Adam Fleming@adamfleming

I’ve heard the PM is trying to get more legal oomph behind the language in the Withdrawal Agreement of using “best endeavours” to reach a trade deal
which removes the need for the backstop
ie solve the problem in this para of last week’s legal advice. (As usual, let’s see)

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:44

@iandunt

She's stepping up preparation for no-deal. By doing this she is making it far more likely. This is an appalling dereliction of basic patriotic duty.

This is currently where we're heading.

Apileofballyhoo · 10/12/2018 15:45

That being said I still can't see how the backstop/Ireland/N. Ireland border is going to work... kicking the can down the road?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 15:46

Alex Barker@alexebarker

Olly Robbins walked past me in the Berlaymont a little while ago. < AARGHHH !! >

Once more unto the breach...

Why is Boris brandishing a mouldy carrot?
She’s banging on about the Left Behind and helping families put food on the table. FFS Angry

GD12 · 10/12/2018 15:46

A pile, a no deal contravenes the GFA anyway.
