I know very little about the implications of Brexit on free movement post March next year, so please forgive the naive question and if possible direct me somewhere I can learn more!

We're looking at taking a holiday in Europe 2 weeks after brexit. We would either use the Chunnel or boat to Calais. I've got 2 small children and neither would tolerate very long queues (2 hours+) to check in. Is this a silly idea? Will we need visas?

www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/brexit-airlines-passenger-compensation-cancelled-flights-grounded-refund-not-guaranteed-eu-law-uk-a8006471.html. The problem is that there is no information yet as to what will or won’t happen. I usually book flights well in advance for trips to see DH’s family in Canada and for regular trips in visit my family in Belgium. At the moment I’m not booking anything for post the end of March.

Oops - the sh1t hits the propellers…. UK-EU flights could cease in event of no-deal Brexit, says government - In latest set of ‘no-deal’ notices, government says planes could be grounded because EU licences would not be valid www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/sep/24/uk-eu-flights-would-cease-immediately-in-event-of-no-deal-brexit

It would be nice to think the UK gov could actually get on with some constructive discussions with the EU but I might be hoping for too much.

We’d better get organized and apply for the international driving license - they’ll be a backlog in the lead up to the summer holidays.

Phew looks like refunds will be given and as I booked a package they will have to refund the whole amount

Cobblersandhogwash · 24/09/2018 23:34

What a pig's ear. And for what benefit? Dick all. It's a joke.

Phew looks like refunds will be given and as I booked a package they will have to refund the whole amount blithering where have you seen that? Is it in one of the new guidance notes since everything else Ive read indicates that the airlines and insurance companies are excluding Brexit related problems as being out of their control

BlitheringIdiots · 25/09/2018 13:22

Googled and found they all giving refunds if happens but not compensation. Two different things

Satsumaeater · 25/09/2018 13:28

Yes refunds and compensation are different things. I have tried to explain this several times on several different threads and been shouted down by barrack room lawyers.

Most of the time the world is right and I am wrong but in this I am right. If you have booked flights and they cancel them because of Brexit, you will get a refund.

But you won't be able to claim for lost accommodation.car hire costs and the like.

I would book flights and accommodation separately and book accommodation on a tariff that allows you to cancel up the last minute.

Satsumaeater · 25/09/2018 13:31

I should say I don't know about packages, I am talking about where you book direct with the airline.

BlitheringIdiots · 25/09/2018 22:38

Yeah. Packages like all inclusive attract a full refund. Simon Calder said the best way to get a protected refund in case of no flights. We will simply stay home and go to work and have an amazing holiday the following year with double the money :-).

Yes that's correct. No compensation or losses. Refunds yes
