Brexit

Isn't it interesting how busy this section of MN is lately?

Cages are being rattled.

Are Leavers finally realising they're not getting what they wanted, whatever that might be?

The government still appears to be operating under the 'they need us more than we need them' illusion hence all the bluster about 'no deal' but is it slowly sinking in that

a) The EU are not going to cave in to our demands
b) we cannot leave with no deal so are going to have to accept whatever is on offer.

Why can't we live without a deal? The vast majority of the world doesn't have a deal? I think it would be a bit native to think that the EU would take a rational stake on brexit-if they give Britain a good deal that would only encourage separatists across the union.

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 17:53

The vast majority of the world isn't an island located just off mainland Europe with inextricably linked agreements

Quietrebel · 03/08/2018 17:55

racecar pretty much ALL other countries bar one or two (dirt poor) HAVE TRADE DEALS IN PLACE. At least one! Leaving without a deal would actually mean leaving without ANY deal AT ALL. Zilch. Nada. Fancy moving to Mauritania? Beautiful desert landscapes but not much else besides.

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 18:12

To be honest racecars post shows there's probably not an increased awareness, just a continued insistence on ignoring the facts,

Evening Bear Slightly busier recently but probably down to MNHQ having a tidy up in AIBU and the level or hysteria has gone up a notch or two I notice.

My cage is certainly not rattled but I will be sure to let you know when it is.

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 19:46

The very fact more Brexit related threads are being posted in AIBU is good though, it means it's moving up people's agenda.

OP posts:
time4chocolate · 03/08/2018 19:59

Well yes, but they are not there long enough before getting reported and moved. Maybe because people aren’t that into it? Or maybe it’s a MH conspiracy?

time4chocolate · 03/08/2018 20:00

MN conspiracy!

lljkk · 03/08/2018 20:02

That 3 blokes in a pub video does a really good job of explaining that No Deal = No insurance to import or export anything. No Deal is far worse than I realised, tbh.

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 20:03

MN have always been bizarrely tardy about moving Brexit threads here which is ironic given how many other AIBU threads could actually be moved to a specific section but the facts there's so many mean interest in the subject is on the up.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 20:05

Bugger, un-tardy. If that's even a word!

OP posts:
RedNed · 03/08/2018 20:05

I agree Bear, I've been surprised at the increase of threads but I think it will die down again soon and people will go back to sticking their heads in the sand 🙄

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 20:07

I'm not so sure. It's getting to the crunch point now.

TM is going to have to concede fairly imminently that staying in SM/CU is the only option.

Either that or go down in histrory for setroying the country- which she won't do.

OP posts:
time4chocolate · 03/08/2018 20:10

Bear think you need to take more water with itWink

lljkk · 03/08/2018 20:15

Here you go, @Racecardriver. The blokes do a great job of explaining No-Deal Brexit, and how trade is screwed if truly No Deal. They also mention how UK had hundreds of agreements in the 1970s that long ago expired, plus never had deals with 60 or so countries that didn't exist in 1970s. The only guy in this discussion who does great out of NoDeal is the international trade negotiator (metropolitan elite wins out again).

relaxingonthesofa · 03/08/2018 20:16

Or maybe even remainers are just fed up of it. I can't face another vote, I'm resigned to the fuck up that is to come. The extreme far right, and casual racism is now all too frequent, if you call it out - you are a snowflake etc. Brexit let the toads out of the bag. Another referendum isn't going to fix that. We need a revolution.

LyndaSnell · 03/08/2018 20:17

I'm getting pissed off with MNHQ moving genuine AIBU threads just because they are about Brexit. Meanwhile people can start any old thread and put it into AIBU "for traffic" and there it stays.

Anyway, Macron is about to capitulate to Theresa May after she's had a chat with him at his holiday home. The Mail says so.

Bearbehind · 03/08/2018 20:20

Agreed lynda, it's like if the thread is in a corner it isn't real.

PMSL about the DM and TM thinking Macron is going to give in to her.

It's yet another example of the refusing to acknowledge reality.

OP posts:
Racecardriver · 03/08/2018 20:49

@llijk can you please send me the minute reference? It's a bit too rambly and lacking actual law/economics for me to listen to the whole thing. Or you could just tell me. Why exactly can't we leave without a deal? Because it will be different isn't really an answer.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 03/08/2018 20:52

Same here, they dont do it for anything else

TammySwansonTwo · 03/08/2018 20:53

^ There’s the problem right there.

The reasons that a no deal Brexit would be a complete and utter disaster are myriad and can be read about all over the internet... but even when someone gives you a video explaining it, you can’t be arsed to watch it and want someone to tell you.

I am horrified by how apathetic and blasé people are being about this.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 03/08/2018 20:55

I saw the brexit board being more discussion of technical/political brexit stuff

But nope...stick a thread on aibu about food prices going up and the op thinks it might be brexit and BAM over to the brexit board

SoloD · 03/08/2018 21:04

Time is running out, the government and opposition divided by infighting and disagreement, and the man appointed to lead the negotiations is an absolute misogynistic muppet.

Meanwhile, Brexit is getting costlier and costlier and the benefits have all vanished.

No wonder people are worried about their jobs, for their futures and that of our children.

lljkk · 03/08/2018 21:18

3 blokes Minutes 37-39 are good for explaining what happens to UK exports under WTO rules (& No Deal conditions). Other countries HAVE to put tariffs on our goods until a deal is agreed (WTO rules), because they already have deals with other countries to keep to, so they can't make unilaterial changes just for UK without a formal deal made. Why would they bother to prioritise making a deal with Uk if they can get same goods for much cheaper under deals they already have?

Minutes 49:20-51 are good for explaining why Our New Blue passports will be made in Holland.

I can't find the bit where they talk UK trading terms with rest of world in 1970s; gist was we had loads of trade deals then that have expired. We can't default back to them & world has changed, everyone will want to negotiate new deals.

GlassOfPort · 03/08/2018 21:22

@Racecardriver

If we leave without a deal we will become, as far as the EU is concerned a third country.

That means that all our imports from the EU (including food and medicine) will have to go through customs checks that our ports are not equipped to carry out, as they haven't done so for the last 40 years.

That means tailbacks and possibilities of food and medicine shortages.

Even if we waive the checks and let everything and everybody through (so much for taking controls of our borders..), tailbacks are still likely to occur at european ports. If trucks cannot unload there, they cannot come back and bring imports in.

There will be plenty of other problems, but this should be enough to give people pause for thought.
