Because it's a bit chaotic and mental to my mind!

The government's handling of Brexit reminds me of the Sybil Fawlty line - 'Ive seen better organised creatures than you running around farmyards with their heads cut off' Grin

middleagedalready · 01/08/2018 17:24

When I am feeling optimistic I think the chaos is deliberate to help the UK accept a more sensible deal that will ensure our economic survival when I am more pessimistic I fear that the chaos is all there is. Time will tell.

@MedicinalGin

I can tell you why.because the Tory party hold this country and its people in total contempt

ragged · 01/08/2018 18:16

Chaotic but not catastrophic was the best case scenario.

Peregrina · 01/08/2018 18:18

The Tories will only do something when or if they realise that they will destroy the party. Since people still vote for them in droves, this isn't likely to happen any time soon.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/08/2018 19:03

Not at all. I assumed as the government asked the people what they wanted they should of (sic) had at least a rough idea what we would get.

...and..

It never crossed my mind that they wouldn't have a plan if leave won and people ready to begin putting it in place.

Confused

Why did people make this assumption?

Why didn't itcross your mind?

I don't understand. There was NEVER a leave or Brexit plan, prior to the referendum. This wasn't some sort of secret, along the lines of 'we'll reveal the amazing details after you've voted to leave' (I mean, who TF would vote for something on that basis anyway?).

There were no details, and there was no plan. There still isn't, over two years later.

So why are people (leave voters) so surprised by this, and what exactly did they actually vote for... ?

Helmetbymidnight · 01/08/2018 19:23

Ah you know you can’t ask brexiteers what the benefits of brexit will be. It sends them in a rage.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/08/2018 19:52

The problem with democracy is that it relies on people have a modicum of cop on.

That people voted Leave, even though there was NO PLAN - and either didn't care that there was no plan, or apparently didn't even realise there was no plan - is mind-blowing.

I hold David Cameron responsible for the entire shit show. He over-estimated the thinking capacity of millions of people.

pennycarbonara · 01/08/2018 20:07

Entirely agree with blaming Cameron.
But he could have also organised a longer campaign with far more thoroughly planned documents on what would happen on leaving the EU, meaning there was more information available to voters and more time for it to sink in. As happened with the Scottish independence referendum.

pennycarbonara · 01/08/2018 20:09

There is no reason to believe that Scottish people have a greater 'thinking capacity' - they had more time to decide, more detailed information, a somewhat different media culture. And in all likelihood, less stirring by interested parties from Russia.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/08/2018 20:13

It’s excatly as I imagined - a total shitstorm.

KennDodd · 01/08/2018 20:53

Except, facts were just dismissed, they still are. Even Gov and industry reports referring to the law are still just being waved away as nonsense. Aaron Banks said when he appeared in front of MPs that the Remain campaigns big mistake was to give people facts, were as they appealed to feelings or as he put he they 'took people by the hand and led them up the garden path'.

I predict that after Brexit when people can see and feel the damage they have caused fingers of blame will be pointed at the EU, the WTO, Remainers, the BBC, experts if fact everywhere except were it belongs. Others will be saying 'long term, long term' this is already happening the JRM saying we wont know if Brexit is a success until 50 years have passed.

LoveInTokyo · 01/08/2018 20:55

I thought it would be bad but the government is failing to meet even my low expectations.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/08/2018 21:28

Dh & I both voted Leave and we thought it would take around 10 years to complete the process, so no surprises or disappointment here.

Out of interest, why did you (and your DH, of course) vote Leave? What did you think you were voting for, and why did you think it would take 10 years?

Ta1kinpeace · 01/08/2018 21:50

A friend of mine voted leave because she does not like immigrants.
She is Irish
Another friend voted leave "to send Cameron a message"
Another friend voted leave to keep jobs for young English people.

None of them have ever been able to explain how their vote would have the result they wanted.

abbsisspartacus · 01/08/2018 23:21

I really really wanted to vote leave but I knew there was no plan and it would be a shitestorm it's daft to think I voted remain not because I thought it best but because I didn't trust the government

LoveInTokyo · 01/08/2018 23:25

Looks like you were right not to.

Jamiem80 · 01/08/2018 23:38

Yes and no I always expected the EU to play it this way and Britain to be useless. However I expected more pressure from large European companies to get a good trade deal as we are a net importer from the EU and I thought far more would be made of the facts we are, I think the third largest contributor to the EU, our share of the EU's assets. Also i expected potential trade deals elsewhere to be emphasized as well as the negatives of a soft brexit.

PestymcPestFace · 01/08/2018 23:49

I also always expected the EU to play it this way, by the rules and with transparency.
And our government to use lies, fraud and NDAs.

Yes, I expected us to become a tax haven for dirty money. Boris does not do things that are not for his personal gain.

RedNed · 02/08/2018 00:25

I am surprised the government have absolutely zilch at this stage. It's 7.5 months away and it feels like they just aren't taking it seriously Shock

Lottapianos · 02/08/2018 06:49

'Another friend voted leave "to send Cameron a message"'

Now this just gives me the rage. The same muppets who voted him in in 2015 decided to 'send him a message' in 2016. Same as the utter plums who voted to Leave as 'a protest vote'. They all need their heads knocking together

sashh · 02/08/2018 07:06

From the point May said, "Brexit is Brexit".

If she'd had a spine she would have

a) not triggered article 50 until there was a plan

and

b) turned it over to an all party committee and left them to thrash out a deal.

mostdays · 02/08/2018 09:12

Yesterday at work a man I've always thought of as intelligent and sensible, if not someone I generally agree with, said "they need us more than we need them". My respect for him has gone, tbh. Whatever your thoughts on Brexit, if at this point you believe it will all be OK on that basis, you are a tit.

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/08/2018 09:31

... and DC sent a double-pronged message right back - 'fuck off losers' / 'see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!!'
