To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Ninoo25 · 28/07/2018 15:09

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

@Blackteadrinker77 - being obese and having a fat store isn't any use in this situation. People need decent nutrition and the energy and stamina to cope with things being a bit more difficult. Carrying extra weight and being unfit isn't really any good.
I'm no gym bunny - I have MS, I'm past 50 for starters and love crisps etc. But I do what I can to stay fit and eat well. That's not a prepper thing. That's a thing.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:22

@Roussette - I can certainly tell you there will be empty supermarkets. Even for a short while. Google "Just in Time" food distribution and how the UK is vulnerable when that is in any way interrupted.

MadeleineMaxwell · 28/07/2018 18:22

But I'm really not worried about running out of food/medicines/fuel. I just don't think even our government could be that spectacularly incompetent in this day and age.

But then again ... they did cause Brexit in the first place.

Well exactly. Who can trust them any more? If we ever did in the first place. Any kind of Brexit is self-harm. Even JRM said it would take 50 years to see any benefit. That's the rest of my life and most of my son's.

Stockpiling would only be essential in the event of no-deal, as this would mean every single lorry or container of food coming into this country would need to be thoroughly checked, which takes a huge amount of time, which means a lot of it will rot and the rest will take so much longer to reach shelves. We import, what, 70% of our food? Take 70% out of your cupboards and see if you could survive a week.

It's not hysteria, it's a sane response to an insane situation. Not stockpiling is betting that the government will not let a no-deal Brexit happen. At the moment, I'd say it's 50/50.

Chinnyreckoning · 28/07/2018 18:23

PigletJohn has spoken and he is the voice of reason as usual.
Shame on people whipping up anxiety in others who can't afford a weekly shop nevermind stockpile.

And if it gets that bad France is only a rubber dinghy ride away.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:24

@Chrisinthemorning - that's a good assessment and plan in my view.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:25

@Chinnyreckoning - assume you are joking.

PestymcPestFace · 28/07/2018 18:27

Excellent plan Chinny, have to assume you live in Kent.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 18:30

Which post of PJ did chubby read? Different one from the one I read..

Deshasafraisy · 28/07/2018 18:30

Rather than stockpiling we should be using our energies to pressure the government to stop this suicide mission.

rainforesttreeswinging · 28/07/2018 18:32

Er no, another hysterical farcical post. Tedious and boring. Ridiculous along with stock piling for Ebola outbreak, super flu, snow in August.

Project fear mark 2. We CAN all see what you are doing and it won’t work.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:33

@Deshasafraisy - given how belligerent people are being on this, forgive me if I don't hold my breath and focus on my family's interests instead.
I always say "don't stockpile, prep" but prepping freaks people out and I would rather they stockpile than stick their heads in the sand.
Lobby away.

DidimusStench · 28/07/2018 18:33

Rather than stockpiling we should be using our energies to pressure the government to stop this suicide mission.

Or you can put to use your multitasking skills! Wink

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:33

@rainforesttreeswinging - who's "we"?

OkMaybeNot · 28/07/2018 18:34

Has anyone seen the mentions of the ww2 rationing and how wonderful and healthy and wholesome it was? How everyone just 'got on with it', nobody complained and we all just grew our own veg, no problem. And if it's anything like that then good, because we're all fat and we should be eating pig's arses and cow's lips anyway?

Isn't it interesting how quickly a society can forget how grim things are when food is scarce.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:35

My parents lived through the war. Bollocks to it being a happy healthy time.

Bellini OK we'll come back when the supermarkets are empty and I'll eat my hat Grin

Chrisinthemorning · 28/07/2018 18:37

@bellini
Thanks, been following these threads and think yours is a sensible view.
Will things like local milk and veg boxes with U.K. products dry up too do we think?

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 18:38

@rainforesttreeswinging - don't take meds, thanks. Isn't the whole country "we"?

Happyhippy45 · 28/07/2018 18:39

@roussette
I just think it's daft to think the whole of England is going to starve without stockpiling.

No harm in being a bit prepared "just in case" and to prevent panic buying with greedy twats buying trolleys full of food, leaving nothing for everyone else.
I mean the whole Brexit thing is daft but its happening....and ummm it's not just England that'll be effected by this.

Growingboys · 28/07/2018 18:40

No

thecatsabsentcojones · 28/07/2018 18:40

I live in Kent, and I'm going to have the mother of all booze cruises before all this ruinous bollocks comes in. And I'll be bloody hiding it all.

Usually I'm the last to get het up about issues such as this, but the government incompetence is worrying and it's obvious that with no deal we have no infrastructure to deal with it all, so yes I'll stockpile. I still can't believe our national act of self harm, and why the Leave team thought they could proffer this to disgruntled voters without any kind of plan. I'd have the bastards up for treason.

Anyway, we have hens, we will have a vegetable patch up and running by that time, and I'll have a very full food store. And if my Leave voting father in law wants any he can cock off.

MadeleineMaxwell · 28/07/2018 18:40

Utterly bored of all this bile and bitterness. Take your meds and have a lie down love

I love a well-reasoned argument.

Horridhenry88 · 28/07/2018 18:41

Re prescription our surgury prescribes 28 days at a time but you can request than a week early so on occasions I do stockpile a little to benefit from my prepayment certificate.

Blackteadrinker77 · 28/07/2018 18:42

The UK already produces 59-60% of the food it consumes. Take away exports as a tin foil hat worst case and we'll be fine.
Let's face it most people in the country could do with eating less any way.

Not that any of this will happen.
