To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

I will be stockpiling medication for sure, there have been many months where I can't get mine already as they have run out or some such nonsense and I've had to wait three weeks.
I don't take all the medication I'm prescribed, I take lesser amounts (painkillers) but can't risk being without so all extra meds will be stored.
I will be buying stocks of my cats prescription fod so I've got several bags in reserve and also will be tin collecting and making sure the camping gas has enough gas.
I don't think anything will happen but it doesn't hurt to be prepared as long as you are not stupid about it.

Is there a list on the preppers board on what essentials to stock up on? So far on my list are the following:

UHT milk
Tea (Morrison's currently have box of 240 t bags for £4)
Coffee (2 bags of Taylors ground coffee £6 at Morrison's)
Flour
Yeast
Bottled water
Loo rolls
Cleaning products
Tinned veg
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned fruit
Salt
Herbs/spices/stock cubes
Oil (catering drums from Costco)
Pasta
Rice
Couscous
Noodles
Part baked long life bread rolls
Painkillers
First aid basics

Anything else?

I'm using empty suitcases to store none perishables as I don't have much storage space. They're stored under my bed anyway so we might as well put them to good use.

PG tips 240 tea bags for £4 at Morrison's

Seasawride , it isn't about being stupid. Until this vote came about most people didn't think about being in the EU and what it did for us and what we gained. The conversations that I and many others (we campaigned for the Remain vote, which we all though should have been called 'stay') and the analysing of the research done, showed that people didn't realise how much we did get from the EU and how our infrastructure, particularly in Northern Cities was propped up by funding. We traditionally get nothing from a Tory Government.

I'm not going into that many thought that we could fully self govern/close our borders because they didn't think about trade. Most people don't think about where our food comes from and why we have the selection of goods that we have in the UK.

Every piece of research done by all the different agencies has shown a swing to remain. You only have to google it.

Birdsgottafly · 29/07/2018 13:01

PortSouth, if you want to really prepare. Get rabbits and stock pile Barley (half joking).

If you are putting it in one end, it comes out the other, so toilet roll and paper towels are useful. Sanitary products and anything you use form the EU.

Studlee · 29/07/2018 13:05

Fake news, I never watch any MSM based news anymore, all biased towards remaining ch4 & bbc worst! I hoping really hoping for a no deal!

Birdsgottafly · 29/07/2018 13:06

JustHereForThePooStories, wealth isn't distributed, though.

So the idea that a whole nation should do penance for acts that they had no control over, or didn't even know about/profit from is absurd.

If that is the case, then we've let the rest of Europe, off the hook way to soon, because of their treatment of minorities. That's without looking at the Eastern block.

We should get passed the hatred and blame.

PandaPolarBear · 29/07/2018 13:07

PortSouth Cereals? Biscuits/chocolate? Squash?

Look at what you eat during a week and just get some extras of that. No need to go nuts, it's very easy to get sucked into the youtube/netflix shows where people have bunkers full of stuff for surviving years 'off the grid'... but most of that is a bit excessive really!

madcatladyforever · 29/07/2018 13:07

I didn't think about coffe PortSouth - that's a must I can do without the withdrawal headache.

Gabilan · 29/07/2018 13:11

I see the bots are starting to flock to this thread.

Which does at least mean there's genuine information on it, that whoever controls the bots is worried about.

midsomermurderess · 29/07/2018 13:12

That peppers board is a bit of an eyeopener. I'm not stockpiling. I live in a flat so, even if I wanted to, I'd have no room.

QuiteUnfitBit · 29/07/2018 13:12

But if we were all to ‘puts bits by’ that would be stockpiling on a massive scale and therefore wrong.
I'm not advocating stockpiling over Brexit, but if people have the space and money, I think it's a sensible thing to do, as long as you rotate and eat everything. The supermarkets may operate on a just-in-time principle, but my household doesn't work like that. Now panic buying is totally different.

We should get passed the hatred and blame

From the other inside looking in, it looks like much of the winning vote was based on hatred and blame, particularly of immigrants.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 13:22

@midsomermurderess - modest additions of extra bits to your shop over the next few months that can be stored e.g . under your bed are perfectly doable.

Efferlunt · 29/07/2018 13:29

I always keep a lot in because I grew up very rurally so it’s ingrained (even though Waitrose is now a five minute walk!) I will up this slightly in prep for Brexit and include things like uht milk which I don’t normally bother with. I’ll just buy a few extra things over the next few months so I’m not contributing to some sort of siege mentality

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 13:40

I'll be putting stuff by on the basis that if Brexit is as much of a shit show as I think it will be, I'll be in a better position than I might have been.

If Brexit is as fabulous as the leavers think it will be, then most of what I stockpile will be used over time anyway, and anything I wouldn't normally use (eg powdered milk) will go to a food bank.

Worst case scenario is that I won't starve. Best case scenario is that I am able to support those less fortunate in need of a food bank. I don't see what I have to lose by stockpiling.

whymewhyme · 29/07/2018 13:45

If everybody stock piles, there WILL be a shortage!!

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 13:46

they are all dead now

Bollocks are they. A relative who was a very senior colonial administrator in Africa only died a few months ago. If that relative has only just died, there are going to be more out there.

However, as much as I disagree with colonialism, I was not alive in the 60s and did not have anything to do with it. As a country we're not into punishing people for the sins of family members, unlike North Korea.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 13:51

If people get extra stuff in, they won't fall foul of our Just In Time food distribution system that will not work well if there is even a bit of a blip.
@whymewhyme

QuiteUnfitBit · 29/07/2018 13:53

If everybody stock piles, there WILL be a shortage!!
If there are shortages post Brexit, it's likely to be because of supply chain issues. If people put by some stuff now, over a long period of time, there won't be shortages, because the supply chain can cope. If there's panic buying the week before Brexit, say, then there'll certainly be shortages caused by panic buying.
(Personally, I'm not expecting a total meltdown in the supply chain.)

MrsMint · 29/07/2018 13:54

NO; but then I am not a remoaner who believes the Blair/Campbell/Soros/Clegg funded Project Fear 2.0 which is being run to try and overturn the result.

Gabilan · 29/07/2018 13:55

That was my thinking bellini. If I add in a packet of pasta and a tin of tomatoes each time I shop, the supermarkets will adjust there Just In Time deliveries. If I panic buy 28 loaves of bread and other people follow suit, I'll contribute to a shortage. I'm aiming for the former, not the latter.

Talkstotrees · 29/07/2018 13:56

Are Blair/Campbell/Soros/Clegg funding Dominic Raab? How very odd.
