Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer

May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

DGR you spoke too soon - the MNHQ clearout of Brexit threads on AIBU has started.

Anyone familiar with the legend of Jan Tregeagle ?

DGRossetti · 30/07/2018 11:24

Operation Motorman Grin ... I can just see MNHQ rolling down the boards in armoured trucks, bulldozing the barricades of Brexit threads to the side, so normal posters can walk the streets again.

(Very niche reference to go over Brexiteers heads).

PineappleSunrise · 30/07/2018 11:27

I wonder when MNHQ will admit that Brexit is just part of life, not a specialist political topic?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/07/2018 11:32

I wonder post Brexit when people complain about the knock on effect - rundown NHS, job losses, higher food prices whether these threads will still get shifted. Brexit might end up being the only show in the Mumsnet town.

DGRossetti · 30/07/2018 11:35

I wonder when MNHQ will admit that Brexit is just part of life, not a specialist political topic?

When it spills into most forums. After all, Relationships - people wanting to know how Brexit will affect them. Adoption - the same. In the News (obviously) and by definition "Chat" (sorry _chat).

Education - naturally. Certainly as in "how will Brexit affect my DCs ?"
Feminisim ? - Well, there's a definite Feminist angle to the future Brexiteers want to subject us to.
Health - again, insulin, and other meds ?
Home and Garden ? Prepping, orf course.
Money - again, obvious.

Why, it's almost like Brexit is the single most important political event in our lifetime. How weird is that ? What is even weirder is the one thing Leavers said before the referendum which did makes sense was that the vote was the single most important political event in our lifetime.

So I'm sure any complaints to MNHQ cannot be coming from Leavers - they're the ones who wanted the vote in the first place.

I was just this minute thinking the very same thing! Honestly, I used to roll my eyes a bit when posters would complain about MNHQ doing/not doing whatever but I'm genuinely a bit shocked at their determination to keep Brexit off the main, high traffic, topics. Why? Ffs anything and everything else can stay in Chat/AIBU despite the fact there are separate topics for eg food, relationships, education, s&b. Why are they so willing to go along with fuck off, we don't wanna know posters when it comes to discussing Brexit?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/07/2018 11:49

oh course once the knock on effects lead to someone mentioning the "B" word leavers will be along to complain.

Its about the only certainty with Brexit leavers will always be angry.

DGRossetti · 30/07/2018 11:50

(very gingerly)

maybe the "stereotype" of the politically unengaged isn't Hmm

alternatively (tinfoil hat) the piper-payers don't like the idea of a politically literate audience on MNHQ. They're probably harder to advertise to ?

Liam Fox says people warning NHS will be sold off in Brexit trade deal with Trump are 'anti-trade'

Apparently I'm anti capitalist and anti trade.

I prefer to call myself pro health and security.

The same leavers that told us this was the "vote of a lifetime" ?

Surely they aren't that dim ?

A-fucking-men!

RedToothBrush · 30/07/2018 11:55

Paul Waugh @ paulwaugh
No10 on no deal Brexit "There are no plans to involve the army in this"
No10 adds that current plans are that in the 'unlikely scenario' of no deal Govt will be able "to implement no deal in an orderly way"

Should we pleased or worried?!

The Times did say that the MoD hadn't recieved a formal request yet though, but this was definitely part of civil contingency planning which would be entirely consistent and in line with the no 10 phrasing

Any recent forces retirees getting special notices ? (Not that they could tell us).

SusanWalker · 30/07/2018 12:02

It's very tempting to start policing the aibu boards isn't it. Please can you move aibu to think my husband is an arse to relationships? Please can you move aibu to think my child's teacher shouldn't have done this to secondary education please? Grin

Peregrina · 30/07/2018 12:06

The clearout to Brexit threads just goes to show how little importance Brexit has been to the average voter, and gives the lie to the Leavers oft repeated claim that "it's what the people want, can't go against democracy." It shows that most people who didn't care about the EU before, don't care about it now.

Dear God reading Fox's interview you would think it was the EU who had voted to kick us out, not the 'ovewhelming' (see above) wish of the British people to leave.

DGRossetti · 30/07/2018 12:08

I suspect under the hood, MNHQ is a "low-cost" outfit Grin.

But a rewriting of history like that suits the narrative when the shit hits the fan. Someone Elses Fault (again).

Fox is a former GP who worked in the military.

Mind boggles.

SusanWalker · 30/07/2018 12:42

Mediocre in general i would say.

Peregrina · 30/07/2018 12:43

Signed. Will it do any good? Probably not, but at least in 20 years time I will be able to tell my grandchildren that I did everything I could.
