May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

I think we should do an experiment - start threads in AIBU and just tangentially mention a Brexit angle, see how rapidly and how many "YABU and move this to Brexit" posts appear 😈

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 14:09

Rabbit stew and pie are nice.

ClashCityRocker · 26/07/2018 14:11

I never understood why farmers overwhelmingly voted leave.

I see a lot of farmers accounts. There are only a few that I come across that would be viable as a going concern without EU subsidies and cheap seasonal (overwhelmingly migrant) labour.

The profit generated (when it is being generated) compared to the capital tied up tends to be very low for most too.

For many, it's already a struggle even with the subsidies - are the government planning to replace these?

I hate to break the news about the Brexit Armegadon and what it means for your bunnies.

It's OK - I am prepared to commit murder to protect my rabbits. I'd sooner eat a leaver than my pets (they'd be far less hassle to catch and much more meat on them).

Alternatively, for every single news story, start a new thread here ? This thread would have been split into about 30, or 40 by now. Plus the Brexit Arms, etc.

It's probably not cricket to mention, but MNs advertisers are all about appearing on the busiest threads and forums. They are unlikely to thank MNHQ for depriving them of a potential goldmine in busy, angry threads.

ClashCityRocker · 26/07/2018 14:18

A quick Google reveals that 90% of our beef and lamb exports go to the EU.

And government have offered to match subsidies until 2020.

So, a year and a bit.

TheElementsSong · 26/07/2018 14:23

MNs advertisers are all about appearing on the busiest threads and forums.

So we should make the effort to bump the threads that are in here?

I was thinking we ought to really bump the Treason one and also the unintentionally hilarious but sadly deceased Channel 4 one. Both real eye-openers for the apathetic (only the ones who are amenable to having their eyes opened, of course).

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 14:23

Maybe the government could use the same trick it's just pulled with nurses ?

Tell JRM etc that they're going for hard Brexit, but when it actually happens, and is so soft you'll have to thumb it in Grin we'll see JRM having to apologise for believing the government ?

SusanWalker · 26/07/2018 14:31

I will admit that one of the many positives to cancelling brexit for me, would be watching JRM trying to contain a toddler tantrum on tv. His frustration with people challenging his wto assertions seems to be increasing as time goes by.

I suppose that in these desperate times you have to take amusement where you can find it.

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 14:45

If other fora I use are anything to go by, MNHQ may have just made a rod for their own back.

It's quite amazing how many discussions are starting to draw in the "B" word.

All predicted before the referendum ... if we do vote to leave, it will jam up everyday life for years.

prettybird · 26/07/2018 14:46

I've just made 12.5 jars of redcurrant and port jelly - and there are loads of redcurrants still on the bush. Do you think I'll be able to barter them come April? Wink (Usually use less than a jar a year Confused)

Already got loads of jam from last year (and a batch of raspberry jam from this year but that is being guarded carefully for our personal use Grin) and the plums are heavy on the tree for this year's harvest Smile

Roy "Chubby" Brown is still touring ...

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 14:51

Jam is a waste of fruit if you can make Wine ...

prettybird · 26/07/2018 15:00

Dh wouldn't let me make wine out of anything but grapes - and global warming hasn't yet made vines for wine feasible in Scotland yet Wink

Once it is, he has the skills and knowledge GrinWine

skills and knowledge

I can home distill .... may be useful if Scotland decides to stop exporting the real stuff to England (and I wouldn't blame them).

SacrebleuLondres · 26/07/2018 16:26

This is one of the scariest graphs I have ever seen.

This didn't happen during the worst financial crisis we will probably ever experience.

And Brexit hasn't happened.

The social stress this will cause feels like it could be big trouble.

Am I being overly dramatic?

Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer
frumpety · 26/07/2018 16:37

Add to that graph a rise in interest rates and kaboom ! Although people keep telling me regardless of whatever happens interest rates will not rise.

The social stress this will cause feels like it could be big trouble.

It's almost like that may have been the intention.

The real winners of Brexit will be the people who bet on both sides. Really clever people never, ever put faith in a "dead cert", because you can still lose. Much better to wangle it so whoever wins, you do.

That's why I think it's a bit off the mark to think the Russians/JRM/Whoever were betting on a Leave win. I suspect they didn't care which side won, as the ensuing chaos created plenty of opportunities to make some filthy lucre.

HermioneGoesBackHome · 26/07/2018 16:54

That graph from the ONS nearly makes me feel rich (we’re not btw) because we can still afford to live wo borrowing.

It IS scary. It is eve;scarier for the firture when people won’t be able to borrow anymore or they will loose some income and they will stop spending at all.
Because THAT will see the economy collapse, as the British economy is strongly based on people spending.....

DGRossetti · 26/07/2018 16:54
