Not going to happen. We will be a tiny country with no support, we will have no negotiating power and will need to take what we are offered in any trade deal.

I am Indian and I am very concerned about this. Hygiene is very poor in India. Culturally hygiene has never been our strong forte. Even now, I dread going to India as I know I will catch food poisoning.

That's is about as reasoned and well argued as the linked article and the sensationalist title of this thread.

The fact is we have been importing food from India for almost three centuries. Those who have even a rudimentary grasp of history will be aware that trade in spices with India laid the foundations of the British Raj.

Your precious EU was totally powerless and ineffectual in preventing French horsemeat (which was actually below required standards of quality and hygiene to be used as dog food), made into a ready meals in the UK passed of as prime minced beef and lamb.

Get your own house in order before spreading spurious rumours about a country that you KNOW will be dog whistle issue to foment fear and unspoken racist views which are now gaining traction and popular support right across Europe.

We have been importing rice, spices etc etc for long before the EU even existed. We will continue to do so long after it falls apart.

Nobody's complaining about imports from india, were complaining that there could be imports of much lower quality and hygiene without the restrictions the eu imposes

This is insane! I have no problem buying Indian produce that meets current required standards or from any other country for that matter. It was quite clearly stated that India are unhappy about the rules imposed on imports into the EU, the suggestion being this could be used as an opportunity to relax the restrictions with the UK post Brexit.

Similar concerns on sub standard produce from other countries have been raised. Is that racist too?

The so-called "hygiene and quality" restrictions imposed by the EUROPEAN have the primary purpose of protecting French and Italian agriculture. The whole nonsense about straight bananas was so that the former colonies of the Netherlands would have an unfair advantage over other banana producing countries in the Caribbean.

So you never had Indian tea, Basmati rice, cardamom, Saffron, black pepper, cumin, coriander, tamarind until the EU came to protect your delicate tummy?

The UK is the worlds 5th or 6th largest economy (depending on which exchange rate you use) and larger than the African continent - hardly small fry.

India makes up 28% of EU rice imports and you also know all these new rules only came in in Jan 2018. Basically anyone born before then will die a nasty and early death due to poor food regulations.

What European standards is it that you talk of? You know for pork production, Spainish farms pump 15x the amount of antibiotics into their hugs compared to Denmark. It's permitted but not good for humans.

A lot of food grown in India is organic because of the farming technology not being advanced due to the high cost of investment. Using chemicals is expensive so a lot of farmers just don't use them. It's been the same in Poland and other eastern bloc countries for years too.

Reading the article there is an awful lot of 'could' which is extremely misleading.

You’re right, they’re not great at everything, but at least problems are found and addressed, and lessons are learned. I only buy British pork products as most pork in the EU is a source of hepatitis and needs cooking much longer than recommended times.
