Despite all the accusations of hysteria for those saying they intend to prep, today Theresa May said households were going to be given guidelines in August and September on how to prepare in the event of No Deal.

Robert Peston@Peston
@theresa_may says 70 "technical notices" for businesses and households will be published in Aug and Sept setting out how we can all prepare for a no-deal Brexit (should that be what happens). Yikes

Arla are already warning that milk product may be scare and baby formula will be 'an occasional luxury' even if we do get a deal
Dairy products 'may become luxuries' after UK leaves EU

Whilst we wait for the government to advise us on what action we all need to consider taking, this is a thread dedicated for those people who wish to share tips, advice and what they plan to do rather than clogging up other threads.

I'm reluctantly joining in this thread because I've decided it's about time we got going on this in our household. I have bought two giant jerrycans and chlorine tablets, not because of brexit but because the 'beast from the east' demonstrated how precarious our water supply is.
I've always had a couple of weeks of food stashed and rotated and our camping gear and wood burner means that we would be relatively warm and have access to hot food should there be power issues.

But it terrifies me that dd will in her first year of university come the autumn.

I'll wander over to the other thread too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2018 08:16

The money situation worries me. I've been saying to dh that we should have a reasonable amount of cash in the house. Just to tide things over for a bit.

Not sure how much cash but make sure you have coinage not just notes.

Thanks Red.

I dunno how much. We always have some, just in case. Had to swap out the notes for current tender as they retired the tens and fives. I think enough for 4 weeks worth of food and fuel would be a good goal. I'm pinning my hopes on some sort of system being sorted out after a month.

Perhaps Mays Misery leaflets will tell us how much we need.

The stuff overnight on NI may have got through to DH.

First he tried to say oh well my friend in NI says violence in NI has been the same as usual. So I asked him why there had been an urgent question in the HoC about it this week.

He shut up.

Water purification tablets mother

You need big containers then use something like. www.lifesystems.co.uk/products/water-purification/chlorine-tablets

Make sure you use the right concentration though.

If you are squeamish about water purification, boiling for 10 mins then cooling is ok. Try to filter out any big bits before you boil e.g. through an old Tshirt. Again- if that's a route you want to go down. Buy some cheapo big bottles of plain water from the supermarket. Stick it out of the way in your home. If things look like they are going to be tricky , water wise, also fill up your bath at the time.

Hello everyone.

Longtime lurker on the Westministenders threads. Never commented as they move so quickly I’m always playing catch-up but I’ve enjoyed (if you can possibly use that word in connection with this monumentally disastrous misadventure) the company of some like-minded and sensible commentators in the face of all this insanity.

I started to stockpile in a minor way a couple of weeks ago but will be stepping it up now...I’m interested though in the talk on here of the getting prepared leaflet, in particular Mrsr8 you have shared a picture of one of the pages. I think I’ve missed something. Have you had sight of a leaked document? It would be useful to know - and again, apologies if I’m asking you to repeat yourself as I’ve missed it in the other thread. I’d love to be able to share with DH who, despite being a passionate remainer, I suspect will think I’m over reacting. Full disclosure: I have form. I might have bought face masks during the bird flu scare...

RedToothBrush · 20/07/2018 09:36

Start saving plastic bottles rather than recycling them all.

At breakfast I checked the label on my squeezy bottle of honey and it says it is made in England from "non-EU honeys." All very well but it doesn't say UK honeys. If they have to import their non-EU honeys via the EU, then they could run into supply chain issues, so honey has gone on my list.

PostNotInHaste · 20/07/2018 10:36

Ohyoubadkitten we’re in the same boat with DD and university.. I think what I’m going to do is keep a stock of bits for her here and dispatch her back with them after Christmas. She’ll be living with her partner who is trying to settle here from another EU country which is adding a whole new level of shitness to the situation.

I’m going to buy her an Instant Pot as she uses that a lot and I think it will give her a lot of flexibility as long as we have power. Will also dispatch her back with cash supply of coins.

ConstantlyCold · 20/07/2018 10:39

Is Brexit actually going to effect water supplies though?

I get that it’s probably a good idea to have a backup plan anyway but why would water be effected?

RedToothBrush · 20/07/2018 11:03

How do you treat water so it is fit for human consumption?

How does it get to your tap?

Follow the supply chains. Plenty that might be disrupted. Electricity. Chemicals. Etc.

That's why we might need to think about water.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 20/07/2018 11:05

@ConstantlyCold - no obvious reason why it would effect water supplies unless, as I pointed out earlier, there is a general negative impact on the people going to work at e.g reservoirs and pumping stations.
I prep. We look at the most likely problems: e.g. interruption to food supply and take it from there. You can stop your prepping long before "there are water supply problems ". Or not. Choice is yours. There's no code you have to follow- just what suits you and your family and what you think is realistic.

pennycarbonara · 20/07/2018 11:06

What articles (news articles not prepper blogs) have you seen mentioning potential power shortages for mainland UK? Or are posts about that extrapolating from the fact we import some electricity?

bellinisurge · 20/07/2018 11:07

Oops - affect not effect. I still police my grammar with or without a couple of extra pot noodles!

bellinisurge · 20/07/2018 11:15

@pennycarbonara - again, it's up to you. If you don't think a Brexit related power problem is realistic then don't prep for it. Always handy to have a torch and spare batteries in. Forget Brexit, think about heavy snow etc - hard to in this weather!

pennycarbonara · 20/07/2018 11:19

I'd like to read articles that mention it. The question wasn't implying anything else. I already have a number of solar-powered lights and a battery torch just in case.
