Despite all the accusations of hysteria for those saying they intend to prep, today Theresa May said households were going to be given guidelines in August and September on how to prepare in the event of No Deal.

Robert Peston@Peston
@theresa_may says 70 "technical notices" for businesses and households will be published in Aug and Sept setting out how we can all prepare for a no-deal Brexit (should that be what happens). Yikes

Arla are already warning that milk product may be scare and baby formula will be 'an occasional luxury' even if we do get a deal
Dairy products 'may become luxuries' after UK leaves EU

Whilst we wait for the government to advise us on what action we all need to consider taking, this is a thread dedicated for those people who wish to share tips, advice and what they plan to do rather than clogging up other threads.

It's a nice feeling @Magpiefeather when you can say to yourself "I've got this".

LunaDeet · 04/08/2018 08:35

That’s amazing Magpie! Hope they fix it soon. That’s one of my big worries, that I’ll come down in the morning to fill the kettle and no water comes out of the tap. I have a few bottles stored now but I’m on the lookout for some camping water carriers to fill in emergencies.

I wonder how many people don’t have any water stored at all?

Magpiefeather · 04/08/2018 13:26

Yes it was so nice to know I was going to be ok without water for a while!

Haha @whatthefox yes, every cloud!

@LunaDeet quite a few I think, given that the water board ran out of bottled water pretty quickly.

One thing I do need to fix is having some “grey water” stored as well. We do have a water butt but it has been so dry that it was of little use, and I was loathe to use spring water to flush the loo! It seems a bit ridiculous in a (usually) very rainy country but I think I’ll store a few bottles of grey water too for future.

RosinaAlmaviva · 05/08/2018 19:07

Oh well done Magpie. Hope they fix it soon. When the water is back on you could refill the bottles you've used with tap water.

I have currently shifted focus to clearing space and organising. Did a trip to the tip last week and got rid of a carload of stuff.

On trial this week: Morrisons Value Toothpaste (30p). It's fine so I'll stock up on this.

Also: tinned vegetables. Why has it taken me so long to discover them? They are the best! So easy to cook. I will be using them on a regular basis and they'll help me get more vegetables into my diet.

I have some Ambrosia custard and syrup sponges (the kind you can steam and don't have to keep refrigerated) but it feels too hot to steam anything so they're waiting their turn.

KimCheesePickle · 06/08/2018 12:34

Grey water can go seriously funky after a day or two... don't store it, but get into the habit of collecting it and using it on the garden.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 06/08/2018 13:40

you could refill the bottles you've used with tap water

Don’t do this. It won’t be fit to use after a couple of days. Deffo keep the empty bottles for future use though.

bellinisurge · 06/08/2018 13:42

I agree about storing grey water. If you are going to have water in storage better to store drinkable water and learn some grey water management techniques.

bellinisurge · 06/08/2018 13:43

And do not just refill bottles unless really really short term.

SoloD · 07/08/2018 10:53

As well as Blue passports we can look forward to nice non EU postage stamps

bellinisurge · 07/08/2018 11:18

@SoloD - love those stamps.

AdoraBell · 07/08/2018 11:52

Where can I get me them stamps? I need to send some cards to the in-laws....

Whatthefoxgoingon · 07/08/2018 11:54

Aw gwan adorabell, splash out for the 1st class stamp, it’s the best one Grin

The day after the referendum I started prepping. I knew we were going to vote leave, but I'd clung to the hope that we wouldn't. I immediately started thinking about how we could leave the country, but soon realised it isn't really feasible for us without hardship.

I think Brexit will be a long-term problem, so prepping for a few days or a month isn't that helpful. So, I have stocked up on many years of non-perishables. I worked out how much washing liquid I use in a month, multiplied that by 12, then by 20. I use most things very sparingly anyway (as we're poor) so it amounts to less than you would think. I have a spreadsheet for everything we use and have collected everything we need that can be stored long-term. I've sourced the cheapest possible version of things, so even if Brexit is cancelled I'm still saving money.

As for perishables (tinned food, dried foods) I have a small stash. I'll buy a lot more between now and Brexit. A month or so before I'll buy things like crackers, jam, chocolate etc. Everything will get used up even if Brexit is nothing but unicorns and free rainbows. I have no problem whatsoever eating things long after their use by dates, as long as they're not green of furry, they're fine. I'm not sure how you tell when it comes to mushy peas?

I've had no luck growing stuff. I suppose we could eat all the snails we've been fattening up if we get desperate. As a vegan I might have issues with that, but all morals go out the window when you're trying to survive I guess.

Good luck everyone. Here's hoping we're all being stupidly ridiculous about the whole thing and Brexit is indeed a golden opportunity.

pennycarbonara · 08/08/2018 00:19

The day after the referendum I started prepping.

Hah, yes, me too. In the last few months I've finished a batch of non-food stuff I stockpiled then. It's quite a bit more expensive now already...

NameChanger22 · 08/08/2018 00:33

Quite a few things have gone up already by more than 10% and lots of budget range items have disappeared from sale. I am glad I bought then. Also, now I never run out of anything and I never have to pop to the shops for emergency tin foil (for emergency hats).

Victoria889 · 08/08/2018 12:06

I get why people panic and prep but in all seriousness if you truly believe there is going to be that many shortages creating that much civil unrest/rioting whats the point of having a stockpile? If people are that desparados for food and meds what's to stop them breaking into your properties and pillaging the lot?

NameChanger22 · 08/08/2018 12:30

I think a lot of preppers have thought about that and have ways to defend themselves and protect their property. Also, who would know? Unless you tell them. Most preppers aren't that stupid.

Also, the majority of preppers aren't preparing for civil unrest and rioting, They are prepping for prices rises, job loss, illness, fire, flood etc.

bellinisurge · 08/08/2018 14:19

Plans to stop people trying to nick our stuff. Plans to leave if I fall.

bellinisurge · 08/08/2018 14:19

Fail not fall

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 08/08/2018 15:25

bellinisurge what sort of plans to stop people? Are you talking in terms of crafty hiding places for your stockpile or full-on self defence use of arms? I can only imagine DH and I coming off worse in the face of a mob of looters.

I do think if we’re talking in terms of having to stockpile twenty years worth of non-perishables (if I’ve understood NameChanger’s post correctly) we’d be some sort of Mad Max type apocalyptic scenario.

Which, of course, David Davis has specifically reassured against. So no worries there then Hmm

Victoria889 · 08/08/2018 15:37

Namechanger22 looters arent going to be Mrs Jones from next door who you've secretly told about your little hoard! They'll try anywhere and most likely be armed.

pennycarbonara · 08/08/2018 15:47

Civil unrest is also more likely to kick off in built up areas. Okay if it went on for long enough it could be almost anywhere, including break-ins in the country, and with ideas like that we are veering further and further away from the likely. But I would only be worrying in the first instance if living in areas like the ones where the 2011 riots went off. (Not always city centres, sometimes more deprived urban areas.)

UnnecessaryFennel · 08/08/2018 16:24

But I would only be worrying in the first instance if living in areas like the ones where the 2011 riots went off.

I had better get some weapons training, then...

NameChanger22 · 08/08/2018 16:32

I’m prepping for the two most likely scenarios – price increases (this has already happened) and possible job loss because of Brexit. I’m not an extremist. If the unthinkable happens and the UK descends into a Mad Max scenario, then I will not stick around in this country to see it. In which case the frenzied mobs are welcome to my hoard. That is, if they can find it.

torthecatlady · 08/08/2018 20:16

@NameChanger22 I'd be very interested to see your spreadsheet, if there's a way to share it? Smile
