Despite all the accusations of hysteria for those saying they intend to prep, today Theresa May said households were going to be given guidelines in August and September on how to prepare in the event of No Deal.

Robert Peston@Peston
@theresa_may says 70 "technical notices" for businesses and households will be published in Aug and Sept setting out how we can all prepare for a no-deal Brexit (should that be what happens). Yikes

Arla are already warning that milk product may be scare and baby formula will be 'an occasional luxury' even if we do get a deal
Dairy products 'may become luxuries' after UK leaves EU

Whilst we wait for the government to advise us on what action we all need to consider taking, this is a thread dedicated for those people who wish to share tips, advice and what they plan to do rather than clogging up other threads.

I live somewhere with unreliable food (and other groceries) availability and frequent power cuts. Don't stock up the freezer, as anything more than 24 hours (provided that you have a decent freezer and don't open the door to check if stuff is still OK....) and you end up with a freezer full of half thawed food that needs to be eaten PDQ.

Things I always buy when I see them (as they may not be there when I go back next week) include:

tinned tomatoes
pasta
rice
pesto
tinned corn
jam
loo roll / kitchen roll
washing powder
cat food and litter
ketchup
tinned soup
powdered soup
UHT milk

If I was starting to stock pile in the UK, I'd add in things like honey, herbs, stock cubes, salt, flour, oats, yeast, sugar... Ie things that can be used to make basic meals / make basic meals slightly more palatable.

I'm pretty sure any Leavers who stockpile will be humanely impaled by their local unicorn.

I've done my first prepper shop too - power pack for my phone and a wind-up radio which is also a torch and can charge devices. I have a digital radio and will get batteries for it but I know it gets through them really quickly, which is why I always have it plugged in.

Was prepping more of a thing in the 70s/80s? I remember growing up we used to have a large cupboard full of tins in case we got snowed in, and there was always a stock of candles in case of power cuts.

The only good thing about this whole situation is that we know the day and the hour when the shit is likely to hit the fan, unlike other types of disaster.

I bought a can of tuna yesterday (not to prep, it's for tonight's dinner) and the expiry date is Nov 2022.

bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 17:02

Please don't put all your stuff in the freezer. Good place to have some extras but have non-cold storage back ups - even shit ones.
Forget apocalypse power cuts, just imagine how pissed off you'd be if as happened to me over the years

  • the freezer just packed in (with all my lovingly prepared meals for after the baby was born)
  • a workman in our house flicked the wrong switch and turned off the new freezer (lost it all)
  • dh didn't shut the door properly (last month!)- lost all my chicken nuggets and pizzas etc.
bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 17:04

@Mrsr8 - can't hurt if you have the space. I live in NW England so we have a hosepipe ban (forget Brexit).

I'll be building a stable to keep the family's new unicorn in.

NOT

Whatthefoxgoingon · 19/07/2018 17:14

I have water butts for watering the garden anyway. Good for the environment.

KennDodd · 19/07/2018 17:16

Maybe this is all part of the Gov plan (I say part of, I mean only) to solve the obesity crisis.

Make sure , if you have a car, that you get in the habit of not having less than half a tank of petrol.

Now I feel like a Viz parody Grin.

GloriaLooseWoman · 19/07/2018 17:22

Thank you for the thread RedToothBrush

Today I made a start on our Brexit preparations.

Sassenach85 · 19/07/2018 17:26

Place marking for ideas 👍🏻

TheElementsSong · 19/07/2018 17:32

solve the obesity crisis.

I'm always amused by the Leavers who pop up to suggest exactly this - that mass food shortages are a Brexit Benefit because of the obesity crisis. As though everyone in the country is equally overweight.

Sassenach85 · 19/07/2018 17:33

How long would frozen bread last?

There are those half baked baguettes you can buy but also wondering about an actual loaf?

bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 17:34

If you've never thought about this stuff before, the natural instinct is to panic. Try not to. (I know that is an unhelpful thing to sayGrin).
You are , to coin a phrase, taking a bit more control of your situation. Which is a good thing.
The standard is to think of 72 hours stuck at home. Imagine that and think about what you need and what you could do with.
P.S. don't tell people you have extra food. They'll want it.

tenredthings · 19/07/2018 17:35

Rather than stockpiling food we should all be marching to Westminster and demanding that they get a grip and sort this mess out. We are not at war needing to ration, this is self inflicted madness. Whoever is going to benefit from Brexit it's certainly not the British public. We need to shout out loud, not passively start making courgette fritters and jam !

KennDodd · 19/07/2018 17:36

TheElementsSong

I'm not a Leaver and I was taking the piss although as 'benefits' of Brexit go, it's about the only one that stands up to any kind of scurrility.

I'm not a Leaver and I was taking the piss

I know Kenn I recognise your username Smile - just got me reflecting on the numerous times I've actually seen Leavers come out with that nonsense.

tenredthings · 19/07/2018 17:44

Thanks for the links kenndodd. Hopefully the dawning realisation that there will be serious disruption, with not much end is sight, (non existant trade deals and non existant infrastructure to deal with the massive changes ) will be enough to mobilise people to demand a vote on any deal reached.

KennDodd · 19/07/2018 17:48

Please share them widely.

bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 17:54

If you are overweight you are not as robust physically as a less overweight or standard weight person to deal with food supply problems. If anyone comes out with that idea, it's nonsense.

RosinaAlmaviva · 19/07/2018 17:54

Tapdancing our water was cut off for about a day and half once, because a valve in a reservoir had broken or something like that. The water company put regular updates on their website and distributed free bottled water via a man with a van. The bottled water lasted for weeks and I was delighted as it saved me buying it and lugging it home.

However, that same situation post Brexit could be much more challenging. Perhaps they wouldn't be able to get a new valve because it's made in the EU, or couldn't get the bottled water to us as quickly because of a fuel shortage, so we would have to rely on our own stash.

bellinisurge what first inspired you to become a prepper?

bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 17:58

@RosinaAlmaviva , what inspired me was cumulative - a negative maternity experience made me think (once I had recovered) that I shouldn't rely on "the state" to help me in extreme circumstances. Brexit stuff just reinforced that . To my mind, the only people I can rely on are me and DH. I have a daughter, I have older in laws. They are the limits of my "who to take care of" list. Oh, and the cat.
But being all gnarled up with anger doesn't help. My dh (a non-Prepper , at least he was), is still pretty angry with people who voted Leave. I just shrug and think "Fuck 'em".
