Westministenders: High Drama at The Ok Coral

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2018 22:38

3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 1881, Tombstone, Arizona.

After months of death threats from the Cowboy Billys, their long simmering feud with the law thing came to a head. The Earp Brothers and Doc Holliday faced the criminals down in a shootout.

Tomorrow's 'sleepover' is starting to feel like the Gunfight at the OK Coral.

The outcome of the real story was three of the outlaws were killed. Another two claimed they were unarmed and ran from the fight. Virgil, Morgan, and Doc Holliday were wounded, but Wyatt Earp was unharmed.

How many Brexiteers can we expect to roll over and resign from the Cabinet and how many will surrender to May and the Pro-Business lobby? ONly time will tell.

Please place your bets for the number of resignations and the number of 'I support the PM' comments.

But don't get too excited. The showdown wasn't the end of the matter.

One of the outlaws who legged it, filed murder charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday. It took them some time for them to be acquitted.

Then Virgil Earp was ambushed and disabled in the arm later that year in December and Morgan Earp was assassinated in March 1882. Wyatt Earp, then thinking he had no other option, went on a personal vendetta to kill the outlaws and then fled the state.

Given the Tory Cabinet and the perchant for stabbing each other in the back and settling personal scores, a repeat of a wild west gun fight, really doesn't sound too wildly off the cards now does it?

Buckle up. Its time to play at Chequers.

Boris's final insult as Foreign SecAngry

His narcissism - How to insult several of those countries whose vote the UK will need for a Withdrawal Agreement and trade framework:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-resigns-western-balkan-summit-no-show-london-brexit-theresa-may-david-davis-a8438946.html

European foreign ministers and dignitaries were left stood up by Boris Johnsonn* at a summit he was supposed to be hosting them at in London before deciding to resign.

Britain volunteered to host the meeting of EU and Balkans governments to discuss the future of the region and its relationship with the EU on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Ministers from the six western Balkan countries as well as those from Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and other EU countries were due to hear Mr Johnson speak at the event but were left wondering where he was.

While Mr Johnson locked himself behind closed doors with allies deciding whether to resign
instead of attending the summit,
German foreign minister Michael Roth, attending the summit tweeted:
“We’re still waiting for our host...”

The annual meeting is a major event for Balkan states and their neighbours, with some sending large delegations and taking it seriously:
Croatia, for instance, was represented by prime minister Andrej Plenkovic, Foreign Minister Marija Buric Pejcinovic, and Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic.

Mr Johnson was due to unveil £10 million in aid funding to help young people in the Western Balkans improve their digital skills.

Ahead of the meeting he missed, the outgoing Foreign Secretary said the announcement “demonstrates the UK’s enduring commitment to the Western Balkans region”.Confused
< I suppose it does demonstrate our commitment - i.e. none >

There's a very interesting active yougov survey on Brexit.

Brexit failure?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/07/2018 07:48

Whereas his replacement is an insult - and a danger - to the Uk population

How the hell can some Brexiters and our "visitors" claim Brexit as anti-elite, when this is what the Brexit elite want to do to British workers: Confused

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/dominic-raab-brexit-eu-workers-rights-uk-talks-brexit-secretary-a8438706.html

Theresa May’s new Brexit secretary previously called for Britain to use negotiations with the EU to scrap workers’ rights, it has emerged.

Dominic Raab, who was appointed to lead the UK’s negotiations to leave the bloc after David Davis dramatically quit on Sunday,
authored a paper calling for opt-outs from EU employment regulations,
including those that guarantee employees time off and limit the number of hours staff can be made to work.

He also opposed rules that give long-term agency workers the same rights as full-time staff,
and those that stop people being sacked if their company changes owner.

Peregrina · 10/07/2018 07:55

authored a paper calling for opt-outs from EU employment regulations, including those that guarantee employees time off and limit the number of hours staff can be made to work.

This might be a blessing in disguise - the EU will know, (as with the discussions about the Irish border), that they cannot take the Govt at its word when they talk about keeping in harmony with the EU, and must make it a legally binding agreement.

Is it possible the state sponsored agent who targeted the Skripals disposed of some clothes or an object in a charity bin which reached the charity shop the victims visited? How long does this stuff last?

Middle class voters don't want to 'see' the Novichok murder for this reason in part. It exposes them to the harsh reality of how the 'underclass' live (by underclass I refer to those below working class in status - something that we don't believe we have in this country - people effectively below the reach of state social security living out of bins and off charity).

My understanding of Novichok is it does not last long, hence why it has to be prepared close to its usage point (in addition to the limits it can travel due to its toxicity)

The theory is that the Skripals only got a small dose and survived in part because it started to rain heavily, washing the substance off. They got a small dose.

In the case of Dawn Sturgess, I've seen suggestion that she got a relatively large dose somehow especially considering it was so long after the fact. Which begs the question: how did the chemical survive so long after its initial use?

I've seen a few theories: one Sturgess didn't get a contact dose like the Skripals. If she picked up a cigarette butt for example, she might have ingested some. Or if she was using dodgy syringes, she injected herself (and the later might also explain why the substance survived if it was in a sealed container without exposure to air).

The charity clothes theory is also possible if she wore something for a prolonged period, but seems more unlikely to me. The clothes would be evidence and something that might be spotted as unusual and could be linked back to someone.

I don't know, but the event reflects badly on government in more than one way: it's not just Johnson, and the Tory party. It's a reflection on our current society too. People don't want to be scared by this. So will prefer to just close their eyes to it.

No one wants to see the darkness they are in denial of it.

Note: how much attention are Labour giving to this matter too?

I've not talked much about it on here for a few reasons. Firstly there's only so much I can post and follow at the same time and yesterday was a write off (I'm expecting similar today and Tuesdays are never good for me anyway). And secondly I can only share what I've read. If that's limited, what I can share is also limited.

It's only radar, but yes I agree with everyone who has said 'This needs more attention'.

Our inhumanity is showing its face on this one, I fear.

And still the Brexit threads are just a subforum hidden in 'other stuff' MN is complicit in the 'don't let them know how shit it is going to be'.
If the media actually put Mrs May's 12 point plan on the front cover and pointed out how few items are actually possible within a 10 year plan...
Oh I give up!
This is less important than some one complaining that her friend won't keep texting.

Amazing that Boris couldn't stop lying about the EU, even in his resignation letter: Angry

Lorry desgn and cyclists - the truth is the opposite of what heid.
This is an example of the drip-drip of outrageous Brexiter lies over the years that turned people against the EU
Call them out, whenever you read / hear them repeated

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27032476

(2014) A large majority in the European Parliament has approved new rules to make big lorries safer for other road users and more fuel-efficient.

If national governments back the changes, lorries will have to have bigger windows and rounder fronts - rather than the standard "brick" design used for drivers' cabs now.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-25942323

Johnson (2014):

"If these amendments, supported by dozens of cities across Europe, can succeed, we can save literally hundreds of lives across the EU in years to come.
I am deeply concerned at the position of the British government and urge them to embrace this vital issue".

BigChocFrenzy · 10/07/2018 08:07

There's a series of comedy spy/thriller stories written by Mick Herron (sp?) featuring a range of incompetent, immoral and/or self interested operatives and some instantly recognisable politicians (Boris), all trying to wreak havoc to their own advantage.
The Skripal poisoning and its aftermath struck me from the first as more like one of these plots than real life (the first in the series is called Slow Horses).

Tanith · 10/07/2018 08:14

Well, of course Jeremy Hunt! What did people expect?

Here is a man (with leadership hopes Wink) who has a not-so-enviable track record of forcing through policy regardless of the fall-out and he has a Chinese wife.

Ideal, so far as a desperate Government is concerned.

Peregrina · 10/07/2018 08:15

That's appalling BigChoc about the US blocking breastfeeding support.

However, when the Leavers talk about 17 million being betrayed, it gives me some encouragement to think that a good proportion of them, probably 14 million, will go 'whatever'. They thought we'd left 2 years ago.

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2018 08:15

Another bit of news from the US. They are trying to blackmail countries into not accepting UN resolution on supporting breastfeeding

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jul/08/trump-administration-opposes-breastfeeding-resolution-report
Trump administration's opposition to breastfeeding resolution sparks outrage

The administration also used its network of diplomats to lean on member states. Turning on the delegation from Ecuador, the US government said that unless the South American nation withdrew its backing of the resolution it would face punitive trade moves and even the potential loss of military help in its battle against gang violence.

Ironically it comes just as Danone is investigating claims it's new formula for apatamil is making babies ill
www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/business-44765890
Danone investigating Aptamil baby milk formula complaints

Given they want into the NHS, I don't think this can be understated nor can the effect in some parts of the world where this will kill children. It's like the Nestle formula controversy on steroids.

I also read this as a deliberate attempt to increase infant mortality amongst 'undesireables'.

2018 is so progressive.

Spent this morning hollering at the TV like a mad woman.
how can you say the cabinet is representative of the people now its heavily loaded with remain voting mps
Look mate, you either buy the democracy line you peddle or you don't. There was a ge after the referendum and these areas voted these remain voting mps in to represent them. You don't get to moan about it now Angry

BrexitWife · 10/07/2018 08:23

I think the fact the Brexit threads are hidden is because people in the uk HATE discussing politics. I mean even those in politics, incl MPs, are shying away from it.

Maybe it’s coming the fact people are avoiding arguments. Maybe it’s because they dint know how to put their point forward. Maybe it’s because you’re not supposed to talk about politics. Or because people don’t want to make a fool of themselves/ put the spot light on themselves.
Or the fact that most people I’ve talked to just dint think they have any way to influence whatever is decided in Westminster so why bother?

You can see it in the arguments put forward for Brexit but also about feminism, trans issues etc etc

But yes that also means people are walking in a sleep state, not even realising that they are walked towards the slaughter house.

There's something worryingly profitic about seeing this tweet this morning

BBC archive @ bbcarchive
#OnThisDay 1982: "Well, there are quite a lot of things wrong with it" South Yorkshire Council opened its nuclear bunker to the public, to show them how rubbish it was.

"There are no beds, no food stores, no tools, no communications..."

There's a full video report from 1982 on the tweet.

Negativity about immigration falls away sharply in Brexit Britain
Social Attitudes survey shows most positive views on migrants since at least 2011

The British Social Attitudes survey, seen as the country’s most rigorous polling exercise, found that just 17 per cent of Britons thought that immigrants had a negative impact on the UK’s economy. Just 23 per cent thought immigrants undermined Britain’s cultural life.

Both counts are markedly lower than when the questions were last asked in 2015, before the Brexit referendum campaign. In 2011, when the questions were first asked, about 40 per cent of people thought immigrants were bad for the economy or British cultural life.
