It's official

Brexit is like an episode of Dads Army with the government, being Captain Mainwaring's trusty band of elite forces doing battle against the evil Mr Barnier.

Yesterday Parliament gave back control to the executive as it surrendered parliamentary sovereignty to Janus faced May. Grieve, it has to be said, truly did look like a broken man as he gave his speech in the commons. Not that we should have too much sympathy. After all he did just put party before country.

So where are we now? The ERG are happy. They have successfully bullied enough until everyone else gave up and folded. They now have no incentive to compromise, as they know that no one can stand up to them. They want no deal, and it's no deal they will force.

The EU are thoroughly fed up and it's difficult to see them do anything but cut us loose saying Brexit means Brexit, this is what you wanted. They have stepped up planning for no deal and their plans were already much more advanced than ours.

We go into the next round of talks with a solution to the Irish Border looking further away than ever. Not helped by the fact that brexit nationalism is restricted to England alone, with many being happy to let NI be sunk into the Irish sea and the favour the rebuilding of Hadrian's wall in order to keep out the foreigners.

It's hard to resist simply sitting down wailing "we doomed". But try to resist and keep saying, you are against this crap. If only so history books don't just say we all agreed to this clusterfuck.

Here have a fluffy bunny to help comfort you.

Referenda are a bad idea for major decisions within narrow time limits, when the consequences of any decision requires major resources & time.

There is no time for a 2nd ref before Brexit Day

Even if there is a transition / extension period - which the RoI, Barnier, Juncker, Verhofstadt all say won't happen without the border backstop - the time would be fully used up by negotiations
The EU is unlikely to agree to an extension of the extension

Violetparis · 22/06/2018 08:42

Agree Tambien. Also have no idea what a Peoples Vote actually means. If people vote to not accept the final deal does this mean we stay in the EU, renegotiate with the EU or leave without a deal. I see alot of spin about these type of surveys and the calls for a People's Vote with little or no detail, much like the original referendum. That's why I am totally undecided about another vote.

Buteo · 22/06/2018 08:46

Britain Elects @britainelects

Whittlewood (South Northamptonshire) result:

LDEM: 56.7% (+56.7)
CON: 36.5% (-63.5)
LAB: 6.8% (+6.8)

LDem GAIN from Con.

Two comments from Twitter:

I live in this constituency and it's the most Tory place you could imagine. This result is unbelievable.

Tories bankrupted the council whilst enriching themselves. Rampant fraud and corruption. Millions of pounds of taxpayers money disappearing...

Peregrina · 22/06/2018 09:17

Isn't South Northamptonshire Loathsome Leadsom's neck of the woods? A most satisfying result, I must say. It looks as though the Lib Dems didn't stand last time. The Lib Dems have a pretty strong base in Oxfordshire, although towards the south of the county, so may be gradually pushing north.

SusanWalker · 22/06/2018 09:18

I'm on the fence about another vote. I think it will just stir up even more hate. There are so many leavers so entrenched in their views that they don't care how much damage is done. Likewise so many remainers are similarly entrenched, but I would naturally argue that that comes from a desire not to see the country shafted.

Part of me thinks we have to leave and then we will rejoin out of complete necessity, by which point only the most ardent brexiteers will remain. I just wish my now secondary school children weren't going to be the ones starting out in 5 years time when everything has gone to shit. Which makes me want another vote just for their sakes. Especially DS who is going to find things harder anyway with his ASD.

SusanWalker · 22/06/2018 09:29

Dear god, I've just seen someone on Yahoo comments claim that Airbus needs us more than we need them. You could not make this stuff up.

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2018 09:29

Yes South Northamptonshire is Loathsome's constituency.

What does 'People's Vote' actually mean ? I am concerned it is just another vague slogan like 'Brexit means Brexit' or 'Job's First Brexit'. Without facts and details they are all meaningless. I honestly don't think any politician or political party has a clue how to sort this shambles out.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 22/06/2018 10:02

Good Lord! Have just looked ast the comments on Yahoo. So many people seem to have lost their minds. I don't think a 'People's vote' would benefit the country. I wish I knew the answer; I wish someone knew the answer. Actually, the answer might be that we're fucked. Pardon my French.

Peregrina · 22/06/2018 10:05

Ah no. the US Ambassador says that we will be alright, so it must be so.

RedToothBrush · 22/06/2018 10:05

Life lesson: Never read the comments on Yahoo. They make the Daily Mail look fluffy.

Hmmm

Sack the Leavers first, and tell them it's Brexit ... because they'd never tell anyone that was the reason

A joke I heard a couple of years ago from a Belgian colleague. Well I think it was a joke ... they said it in Dutch first to their boss. I was reminded of it a few days ago when a LinkedIn comment rather unwisely noted "there are still redundancies" at an old workplace.

54321go · 22/06/2018 10:19

If you look at this from a business point of view the direction the UK has taken started at the vote or possibly a little before when the stupidity of the various claims were reaching their height.
Big business have strategies running for years and they like certainty, although accepting that it can't be guaranteed. At the time of the vote boardrooms will have been buzzing with speculation about what might happen and what can be done to mitigate any negative effects. The UK government's inability to make anything clear (in a tangible way) has almost certainly persuaded many that the UK is not the place to be and they will have increasingly been exploring and planning an escape plan, that's what they DO.
I am surprised the business leaders have managed to find polite ways of expressing the gross stupidity of the Government without saying 'F off were leaving'. The actions taken in business are not far removed from 'simple' domestic decisions (shopping etc) so anyone thinking they are working to a different process is obviously incorrect. Money does not grow on trees (in the long term), somebody pays.

Hasenstein · 22/06/2018 10:21

Lovely headline on the front of the Daily Mail:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-44571100

How wonderful, after 40 years paying taxes here, to still be seen as a "migrant". and to graciously be "allowed to stay here".

54321go · 22/06/2018 10:28

I am struggling with the relevance of any party voting now as it seems all parties have remainers and leavers and none can say decisively that they want in or out of the EU. To me the Tories have flipped and flopped about and continue to make, eat and bathe in fudge. Labour are similar in wobbling about but won't 'win' at anything.
Independents (anyone that aren't Tory or Labour), who might have a real grasp of things are too few to actually make a difference.

DGRossetti · 22/06/2018 10:29

Of course, foreigners being allowed to stay is most emphatically what Brexit was not about....

If I didn't have a life the idea of trolling Brexiteer forums, saying how pleased I am that Brexit means we can officially allow a lot of foreigners to settle permanently in the UK might seem appealing.

In fact it might be worth name changing, and posting as a Leaver, claiming this is exactly what I voted Leaver for in 2016.

I hope nobody here is as immature as I am Hmm

That ship has sailed. We're out. We need to start looking at the election after the next election for who can best make things better. That chapter is not yet written, and maybe the players in it haven't been assigned yet. The politicians who will get us out of this mess are probably still doing their GCSEs at the moment.

ttprw · 22/06/2018 10:51

It's occurred to me too DG 😁
All those lovely commonwealth migrants coming over...
🤣

SwedishEdith · 22/06/2018 10:55

David Allen Green Retweeted George Freeman MP
"I didn't realise businesses would prepare for 'no deal'," sobs MP who voted for amendment providing that government could keep 'no deal' as an option.

George Freeman MP
@GeorgeFreemanMP
Seriously worrying, if true, story in @thetimes of @Airbus planning major disinvestment from the UK. I will be seeking urgent reassurances from Cabinet Ministers that this sort of major loss of jobs, investment and prosperity as a result of #Brexit will NOT happen.

George Freeman voted Leave himself.

DGRossetti · 22/06/2018 10:56

Sorry, but fucking moron.

TheElementsSong · 22/06/2018 10:56

Do it, DG Grin and don't forget a strident line in how eager you are to experience several decades of hardship to prove your patriotism.

Although, it seems that there is no extent of arrogant ignorance (DontTheyKnowWhoWeAre / TheyNeedUsMoreThanWeNeedThem / SnappySloganeeringWillMakeEverythingGreat) that you could invent, that would not be entirely credible as a True BeLeaver.

DGRossetti · 22/06/2018 10:57

DarlingNikita · 22/06/2018 10:57

Sorry, but fucking moron.

Quite.

Or staggeringly disingenuous. I can't really tell any more.

DGRossetti · 22/06/2018 10:58

I may already have Smile Hmm

After all, you must have been asking yourself reading elsewhere who on earth could be that stupid ?
