Westminstenders: Rebel or Reveal

The EU Withdrawal Bill made it through the Commons. Though May did not manage it unscathed.

In an attempt to divide and conquer the Rebels, May might have damaged trust. We shall find out. The Grieve Amendment faces the Lords. We also will see if the Lords will back down on their amendments or apply some new ones for the Commons to deal with in Parliamentary Ping Pong.

Aaron Banks has been exposed as being pally with the Russian Embassy in a plot twist that absolutely everyone saw coming.

Meanwhile the EU thinks we have already run out of time and is preparing options to extend talks beyond the a50 deadline. These include having MEPs for the 2019 - 2024 session.

There is also growing talk around Europe that freedom of movement in its current form is unsustainable. Ironically we might see the EU adopt something akin to Cameron's pre-referendum proposals as the EU reforms.

Theresa May has also announced - at a moment when she is looking particularly weak - a new tax for the NHS, cunningly disguised in spin as 'the Brexit dividend'. Of course shareholders don't always get dividends and at times of poor economic performance instead might be asked to stump up extra capital...Expect to see buses with £350 million of the side just in time for the next general election cycle.

And so the Zombie PM limbers on towards the end of the summer session and the relative safety of the summer holidays. More drama, cringing and disbelief guaranteed before we get there.

Why 'fireworks', Red?

Sorry for being dim.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2018 11:19

I don't know tbh…

but I can image labour MPs propping up a tory government isn't going to sit well with the party.

Dan Bloom @danbloom1
I asked one Lab MP in a Leave-backing seat - still undecided about how to vote today. They don't want to back Tories but also worry about being branded the 'delay Brexit' operation. Plus, Tories have been leafleting against Lab MPs on the ground over the weekend. Squeaky bum time

Expect some to abstain

EXCL Tory MP reported to data watchdog over claim he 'named and shamed' constituents on Facebook

Tory MP Gordon Henderson was accused of breaching strict data protection rules after he published the names and partial addresses of constituents who sent him a him a letter criticising his call for a "yob" who killed an elderly woman to be given the death penalty.

The letter - signed by local resident Ben Franks and backed by a number of other constituents - included the names and addresses of those supporting it on a separate page.

I saw Caroline Flint talk in the commons last week, going on about immigration and what her constituents had voted for. All i could think was what are you going to say when your constituents ask you why you lost them their jobs? Or are you going to blame them?

I always admired Merkel for her stance on the migration crisis. I think she did what she felt was the right thing to do and I seem to remember at the time seeing a lot of Germans welcoming the refugees. I do think that a longer term solution needed putting in place though.

I find the idea that some refugees are a threat to the Christian church laughable. The biggest threat to the western Christian church is atheism. Most faith leaders in this country are friendly with each other and view each other as having common goals.

I love your little boy getting ready for a career in parliament Red. DS wants to be the first autistic British PM, although I think that's unlikely, not because of his autism but because he's lib dem.

Sure, there's no national unity at all in Britain thanks to the PM's decision to ignore half the country and drive for the most disruptive and chaotic Brexit possible while blaming immigrants, remain-voters, and the EU for every cack-handed mistake she's made.

But let's pretend that a parliamentary vote to prop up all her errors will make all the really obvious national schisms go away. Sure. That will bloody work.

54321go · 20/06/2018 11:44

That sounds nice. I have a sneaking suspicion that at this point the EU want to see a plan, and are not particularly bothered about national unity especially if the UK is leaving. Maybe I am being fussy.

Am I the only one who feels sick at what the result of today's vote might be?

Mind you, I felt sick just before the polls closed at the last election, thinking about a potential landslide for the Tories, and it didn't come to pass. Although Theresa May obviously thinks that it did.

And a hollow laugh for that one. National fucking unity. Like the rest of the EU care.

Am I the only one who feels sick at what the result of today's vote might be?

No, I do too.

54321go · 20/06/2018 11:48

@Pineapple, agree with you but what was the turnout of voters? It was only 52 percent of those who voted.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 20/06/2018 11:48

The issue with this national unity thing is that the EU team are all able to understand English and can see that even the government is not unified, let alone parliament nor the entire nation.

Pro-Brexit bias noted. Who runs the Metro anyway.

metro.co.uk/2018/06/18/thousands-holidays-cancelled-brexit-7641496/

Thousands of holidays could be cancelled next year if Britain leaves the EU in a ‘no deal’ scenario, it has been reported. Brussels has reportedly refused to discuss an emergency aviation contingency deal with the UK before Britain leaves the EU on March 29 next year. The EU is reported to have banned the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) from holding talks with the Civil Aviation Authority.

If he can string a well thought out set of policies together he could have a chance but doing it the Lib Dems might make it a tough call for overall success. Not a reason to give up though.

You don't need to understand any language to see headless chickens in action.

SusanWalker · 20/06/2018 11:57

The EU knows there is no national unity. Barrier and Verhofstadt only have to read the messages on Twitter to know that.

54321go · 20/06/2018 11:57

The irony of the EU which works substantially in English not having GB +NI present.
