Westminstenders: Rebel or Reveal

The EU Withdrawal Bill made it through the Commons. Though May did not manage it unscathed.

In an attempt to divide and conquer the Rebels, May might have damaged trust. We shall find out. The Grieve Amendment faces the Lords. We also will see if the Lords will back down on their amendments or apply some new ones for the Commons to deal with in Parliamentary Ping Pong.

Aaron Banks has been exposed as being pally with the Russian Embassy in a plot twist that absolutely everyone saw coming.

Meanwhile the EU thinks we have already run out of time and is preparing options to extend talks beyond the a50 deadline. These include having MEPs for the 2019 - 2024 session.

There is also growing talk around Europe that freedom of movement in its current form is unsustainable. Ironically we might see the EU adopt something akin to Cameron's pre-referendum proposals as the EU reforms.

Theresa May has also announced - at a moment when she is looking particularly weak - a new tax for the NHS, cunningly disguised in spin as 'the Brexit dividend'. Of course shareholders don't always get dividends and at times of poor economic performance instead might be asked to stump up extra capital...Expect to see buses with £350 million of the side just in time for the next general election cycle.

And so the Zombie PM limbers on towards the end of the summer session and the relative safety of the summer holidays. More drama, cringing and disbelief guaranteed before we get there.

I've sent an e mail to my erg member mp.

mrsreynolds · 20/06/2018 06:27

There is no way the party will select a Muslim pm.

Nope.

This separation report has probably already been posted.

This is the basket case we want to put all our eggs in.

Remind me our oh so special US relationship is more in need of nurture than one with the EU 27 because?

Tanith · 20/06/2018 06:58

Jeremy Hunt isn’t a Muslim. If he becomes PM, he can select his own Chancellor.

He is a Remainer who has voted with the Government ever since (and before) the Referendum.
He also has a long history of being put in places to do other people’s dirty work and take the flack.

He’s carefully kept his nose clean and his head down. He’s also said he’s not at all interested in being PM, so that practically guarantees him as a candidate Smile

mrsreynolds · 20/06/2018 06:59

Javid as chancellor?
Nope.
Can't see that happening either.

mrsreynolds · 20/06/2018 07:00

I'm not sure destroying the nhs is "keeping his nose clean"

Tanith · 20/06/2018 07:04

So far as the Conservatives are concerned, it is. He’s done exactly as they want every time and has not openly criticised them.

mrsreynolds · 20/06/2018 07:07

Hmmmm

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 20/06/2018 07:11

I think I'd rather have Javid as Chancellor than Hunt though. Unless we really want that destroyed so it can be capitalised too.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2018 07:18

I'll ask again. Why did May just drop a load of money on the NHS - that the chancellor had previously said no to and Hunt has repeatedly asked for? I'm guessing it's not just cos of Brexit, nor because of a potential election. Name one thing May has done as PM which hasn't been about saving her own neck.

BREAKING: Labour announces that it opposes a third runway at Heathrow - but won’t order its MPs to vote against it in the Commons next Monday. Er ...

Translation: we should look like we oppose the runway but Corbyn has lost all authority and control and doesn't want to embarrass himself by calling a three line whip only for dozens to rebel.

The Paul Foot Award 2018

THE 2018 Private Eye Paul Foot Award for Investigative and Campaigning Journalism has been won by Amelia Gentleman of the Guardian for her Long-term UK residents classed as illegal immigrants campaign. Her investigation centred on tightened immigration regulations and the catastrophic consequences for a group of elderly Commonwealth-born citizens who were told they were illegal immigrants, despite having lived in the UK for around 50 years – but with no formal paperwork to prove it.

Ian Hislop, editor of Private Eye, said: “Congratulations to Amelia Gentleman for a campaign that was revelatory, important and amazingly effective. This was the Windrush scandal – where a cabinet minister was thrown overboard and the ship of state nearly sank.”

Yes, please let's have a meaningless vote on #Brexit, in which parliament exerts no influence over government. Democracy demands that we leave this trifling decision to opaquely-funded thinktanks, foreign billionaires and Number 10 policy wonks.

Public Service announcement: Debate on the #MeaningfulVote is scheduled to last for 90 mins. Provided there are no Statements or UQs, the debate should start around 1pm with the key vote on whether to keep the #Grieve2 #MeaningfulVote Amdt as the first vote at around 2:30pm.

borntobequiet · 20/06/2018 08:15

I thought the NHS money was because there is every likelihood of an election soon.
It also came out of the blue, apparently with no planning beforehand and that ridiculous "Brexit dividend" strapline. Just as though it had suddenly occurred to someone Boris Gove Nick Timothy "Wow, big birthday! What about a present? That'll make everyone happy..."

Are there likely to be enough Tory rebels to defeat the government ? I can't see it happening but would be happy to be proved wrong.

US quits the UN Human Right Council.
What ???

Because they criticised the family separation policy, although officially it’s about Israel.
