British politics and media in a nutshell.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomerang_effect_(psychology)#Political_beliefs

No EU progress, no discussion. Just this. Keep everyone in line by bouncing boomerangs.

Disaster capitalism looms, they just have to get us to the edge of the cliff before the centre reforms. That's it.

If the legal roads to stop Brexit are closed as David Allen Green says, then how do you force the political flood gates to open, especially with both the far left and the far right using micro-aggression against the public to keep the centre ground weak?

Answers on a ballot paper on 3rd May.

So the microchipping... To be accomplished by vets?

This harkens back to 'no dogs, no Irish'.

Maybe the good old days so beloved of many Brexiteers are the times when even the people putting food on the table by taking in lodgers could hate openly.

This is an important story. Theresa May seems not to have moved an inch on immigration since the Windrush disaster. I’m hearing this cabinet exchange was very spicy

I don't know if it's already been discussed but does anyone wonder about the conversations the Johnsons must have (they seem close - are they?). But I'd forgotten that Amelia Gentleman was married to Jo Johnson.

Regarding newspapers I'm embracing my new hobby of checking what the trade publications say..this time the Press Gazette.

IMO it's great the new Daily Express editor seems ashamed of what's gone before. However according to the Press Gazette It's the Sun and the Mail that have far more readers.

"Within each audience category – print, phone (mobile), tablet and desktop – The Sun dominates on mobile with 23.8m readers a month. But, it is the Mail titles that lead on tablet, with 4.8m readers a month.

On desktop, the Guardian titles are the most read, with 8.7m readers a month, while in print the free Metro newspaper is the most read with a reach of 10.5m readers a month."

I couldn't see if anyone had already posted this. Interesting view on the fishing industry vs the fish-processing industry in leave-voting Grimsby. The processing industry employs thousands and is dependent on frictionless trade with the EU, compared with an estimated 20 or so fisherman that still work the docks. The rose-tinted view of the Grimsby fishing industry is in conflict with the economic reality. mobile.nytimes.com/2018/04/23/business/grimsby-brexit.html

Apparently there a poll coming out thursday which says Labour are not polling as well as expected in London. So says the gospel that is Mr 1984.

I thought Corbyn's Labour weren't into polls and thought they were all a load of shit.

I am shocked by this suggestion. Shocked I tell ya. The possibility has not been hiding in YouGov's figures for months. People have said it outright on twitter. Is it really
just dawning on Corbynites that perhaps they aren't quite connecting beyond the echo chamber?

So Mr Owen Jones has to pull the old, 'shit we aren't doing so well to motivate people to the polls' trick.

Labour will do well in the locals but I don't think it will live up to hopes. They have burnt a few too many bridges with people who might otherwise bother to vote.

No wonder the EU wont accept Uk "high tech" solutions for the border:

. The Home Office mobile App (for E27 citizens who want to stay in the UK) won't work on iPhone, the phone used by half the adult population 🤦🏻‍♀️

. Catherine Bearder, a Liberal Democrat MEP who attended an HO meeting, said one official had suggested
applicants could “borrow someone else’s” phone to complete the registration 🤦🏻‍♀️
“It is beyond belief,” Bearder told reporters.

I read that thread on twitter and much as I think there is anti Semitism problem on the left, there is also a deliberate attempt here to conflate legitimate political opposition to Israeli govt policy with racism.

Mistigri · 25/04/2018 07:23

Really hard to call the LE but in London there has to be potential for a big turnout of EU citizens to create gains for the LDs and Greens. Low turnout will make their votes more potent. Here's hoping.

Mistigri · 25/04/2018 07:29

But I'd forgotten that Amelia Gentleman was married to Jo Johnson.

I had NO idea! It's impossible that (some people in) govt haven't known about this for months. It puts a whole new light on the whole thing.

I'm actually stunned to read this.

Mistigri · 25/04/2018 07:31

Sorry, quote fail there (MN worse at apps than the HO).

Meanwhile, in an odd parallel to Brexit, the US company which oversees the registry for internet domains has somehow managed to persuade itself that the new GDPR rules (which will affect the publication of personal details in internet registrations) were for other people.

www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/25/icann_whois_gdpr/

ICANN has been told for a second time that it must fundamentally change its Whois service to become compliant with Europe's incoming privacy law – and do so within the next month.

This will be fun, as they've not done a stroke of work towards it (sound familiar ?).

Maybe it's something about English-speaking peoples ?

Mistigri · 25/04/2018 07:44

I think the GDPR is going to take a lot of companies by surprise. DH is a med/pharma translator and it has a potentially big impact on clinical trial data handling and documentation but even quite big companies seem to have been slow to react.

DGRossetti · 25/04/2018 07:46

I think the GDPR is going to take a lot of companies by surprise.

I know it is.

RedToothBrush · 25/04/2018 07:59

Echoing what DGRossetti just said.

DH is forever ranting at me about the current law and how few people in the industry whose job it is to know this stuff don't.

The skills and ability people have in the IT industry are a lot less than people realise. To the point it would scare you. The HO and the TSB cases being two good examples.

There simply isn't the knowledge and talent out there and it has been made a lot worse since the referendum too.

There is a real shortage of people in Manchester. A lot of firms have started to locate there to get out of London for various reasons. Recruiters are desperate. Competition to get good people is starting to push wages for senior devs up above and beyond pretty much any other industry at present.

From a personal point of view, this obviously is not a bad thing financially. In terms of the demands it puts on DH, its not so cracking.

Dobby1sAFreeElf · 25/04/2018 08:00

There are companies who aren't even compliant with current dp even now. There's definitely a head burying thing going on with gdpr.

RedToothBrush · 25/04/2018 08:04

Absolutely Dobby. DH has had kittens over it. 'On the bright side' the ICO and the police don't have the resources to deal with the sheer amount of non-compliance which will put up.

The non-commercial clinical trials sector is definitely taking the GDPR seriously- it’s all anyone’s talked about for the last year!

I will say that requirements around consent (including consent for the use of personal data) are already pretty rigorous for clinical trials, so that’s cushioning the impact to a certain extent.

DGRossetti · 25/04/2018 08:16

Bearing in mind that GDPR provides for compensation to the person affected ....

But is spending (our) money on recruiting from the Caribbean (you know, that place the Windrush went to. Once.)

Bolshybookworm · 25/04/2018 08:17

Is it a 72hr timeline for reporting breaches? That will be interesting.
