Roundheads or Cavaliers (lighthearted)

At the moment we are a fundamentally divided country between leavers and remainer's in a way that we haven't been perhaps since the Civil Wars. You could argue that it is many of the same issue's of class, democracy and parliamentary sovereignty. In a modern context who are the Roundheads and who are the Cavaliers.

Disappointingly, I think the Parliamentarians are the Roundheads and the Divine Right etc (Kings, experts, Tony B) are Cavaliers. That makes me a Roundhead and the Cavaliers had way more stylish dress sense - (could say the same for rEU).

I thought this was going to be about the pros and cons of circumcision.

It's a tricky one!

I think the Remainers would claim that Brexiters were cavaliers due to the perception they have of Brexiters 'harking back to glory days of empire' etc, and the whole Gina Miller & Brexit Withdrawal Bill 'Parliament is sovereign' thing.

However, I agree with howabout - I think the remainers are more like the cavaliers because of the whole 'you didn't vote how we wanted/told you too' divine right thing - especially Blair, Clegg, Adonis, Heseltine types.

I would also say that leave voters are Roundheads. Its not necessarily to their credit. Leave were arguing for the primacy of parliament and try to force leaving the EU through parliament using the Henry the VIII act. In the civil war the parliamentarians fought for the primacy of parliament and ended up with a Lord Protector.

It's an odd one as the Cavaliers were the Royals and one's with all the money, and power, So that would be the EU.
The Roundheads would be the leavers, who don't think the power divide was right, and that the church should be more involved on a local level.

Shame is that Cromwell once he had power, turned into someone who used his power and did many things the Cavaliers were doing... he wanted to hand power on to his own son, and this didn't work...

This is really really interesting.

Roundheads were also the ones who said "no, society has got it wrong. We need to go in a different direction", so that's Leavers as well.

I wonder whether Roundheads didn't admit to their Cavalier friends that they were Roundheads? Must have been an awkward moment when they all arrived at Edghill, and needed to sort themselves into teams. Ahem.

This means that the Remainers are Wrong but Wromatic, and the Leavers are Right but Repulsive, which is also probably a fair cop.

Let's not forget that the Roundheads won the war but not the peace - after the execution of unpopular tyrant Charles I, the parliamentarians took charge and created another form of unpopular tyranny leading to the restoration of the monarchy just 11 years later (simplified, I know, but essentially what happened).

The EU were thought to be the Cavliers BUT stay with me here, we have home ruled for years, by stealth the Roundheads EU's took over the UK for about 40 years... They were not what they seemed, as with the Round heads, and Junkier Cromwell robbed the poor and made all his friends in charge, leaving the poor fold in need and upset.. Junkier Cromwell tried to put his nasty son Banier in line for the Job,,, but it all failed when the UK decided to let our country out of all the rules and restrictions imposed on it.....

The People Rejoiced and welcomed home the cavleavers
And the Leavers were in charge for 400 years...

Neither side is particularly edifying really !
It's an interesting question though.

Some historians might suggest that you'd need to look at the religious dimensions which were involved in the ECW. Which might take the humour away .

Generally (with exceptions, naturally), Parliament was protestant, while Royalty was more Catholic. A lot of Royalists were Catholics hoping for a return to the good old days which Parliamentarians wanted to stay very "old".

In that light, I'd say Remainers are parliament, Brexiteers royalists ...

I was thinking a while ago Brexit can be compared to the English reformation (simplistic I know!) Henry VIII wanting to break from Rome, the EU of its day (tenuous), papers at the time prepared for parliament said this realm of England of England is an empire. I heard the long view on Radio 4 a while ago someone described how lead was stripped from churches and sold to the middle east during Elizabethan times - then under James I terms were made with Europe for trade - I am vague on detail though....!
