RedToothBrush · 22/12/2017 14:57

Yay for the blue passports.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all

May next year bring us £350 million for the NHS, cake, unicorns, financial passporting, access to the single market, Irish love and of course control to the people.

(Apologies been up to my eyeballs. Normal service will resume after Christmas).

And Gove isn't stupid - if anyone has a dawning realisation that Brexit is Brexshit, it'll be Gove

He knew that before the referendum - as did BoJo. However, they can't be all that smart, since they called it wrong. Although you have to ask WTF happened in the world when the winning side is the "wrong" one ?

Here's a suggestion .... Bojo OUT, Jacob Rees-Mogg IN. With JRM bestriding the globe, people had better be careful what they say about Great Britain ....

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 18:04

Gove knew before the referendum, but thought that supporting Brexit would be politically beneficial. Not to mention that there was a sense that no was unlikely to win.

Add to that, shifts politically that Brexit has already produced, might be sufficient for his tastes and his pockets... whilst avoid damage to his career.

Gove is someone who finds opportunity in a situation and uses it to capitalise for personal gain. Do you think he has a depth of political conviction? Or just want suits the moment?

BiglyBadgers · 01/01/2018 18:12

Remember how Boris spent ages during the referendum campaign deciding what side he was going to be on? The only reason he went for leave was because he saw it as an opportunity to get closer to his goal of being PM. I believe the same of Gove. I actually think they both would have been far happier if they had lost as they could have then jumped on UKIP tails and riled up the anti-EU lot in the Tory party without having to actually do anything.

They are both slimy little opportunists who only believe in one thing and that is themselves. Any brexiteers who thinks Gove or Boris give a monkeys about them or their cause are idiots Angry

Anyway, we all need to talk about Toby Young and 'progressive eugenics'.

quadrant.org.au/magazine/2015/09/fall-meritocracy/
The Fall of the Meritocracy

Just to point out, there is NOTHING progressive about eugenics. Its another one of those Trumpisms which turn things upside down and redefine something as the opposite of what they actually are, to confuse and to try and sell something unpalatable to society.

It should alarm you, that ANYONE who openly talks about the possibility of eugenics in positive terms is in an education role of any sort. Especially someone who has clearly been put there for their ideological beliefs rather than because of their skills and experience.

Normalisation of the concept of eugenics as being acceptable should be a great big red flag.

Just like Trumps and Racism, just like Trans-Cult and MRAs, just like the Mail and Islamophobia.

All the same.

They were always going to go after education.

This is it and its potentially more disturbing than you might realise.

Its one step away suggesting we sterilise certain groups because they are not 'good enough' to society. It dehumanises those with 'low IQ' or disability. And more often its not 'low IQ', but a failure of education or society that no fucker wants to take responsibility for anyway.

It deliberately associates low class with low IQ. There are no examples of high class and low IQ at all you see. They are ok, because they can buy their qualifications or get Daddy or their mates to give them a leg up you see. Having a high IQ isn't needed to get top jobs, which is the entire fundamental problem which leads to corruption.

This is just an excuse to remove normal reproductively from certain groups. The 'Undesirables'. Noting here that the Right to a Family Life is enshrined under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act and also in EU Law.

And guess who this 'progressive eugenics' would have a particular physical impact on? Once again, its women. Anyone who has had fertility treatment will be aware of the health risks associated with it (both mental and physical). 'Screening' involves the poking and prodding of women, and the pressure to be poked and prodded from government and society, 'for the greater good'.

Can I spelling this out again?

N-A-Z-I-S-M
with modern PR.

OP posts:
woman11017 · 01/01/2018 19:17

would have a particular physical impact on
'Epsilon' class. Women as vessels etc. Eugenics has been a 'thing' with a certain type of caucasian man back to HG Wells. But they are all crawling out from under their rocks now.

Fertility and the real reasons for its 40% decline amongst western men; 'child protection' and forced adoptions, are background issues, coming to the fore ( lots of MN threads on them)

Inevitably the west will be majority BAME in a decade. They don't seem keen.

QuentinSummers · 01/01/2018 19:21

Dear God that article is scary on so many levels.
It reminds me A LOT of Mens Rights Activists and their evo psych just so stories about why men deserve to be in a dominant position over women (not helped by the fact he refers to "men" where he should really say "People", but that's just feminist pedantry).
And he really thinks embryo selection on the basis of IQ is the same as screening out hereditary diseases. Clearly he would be one of the screened out embryos if he thinks "IQ" (which is almost impossible to quantify anyway) necessarily equates to a good life outcome.
What an absolute jizzstain. How do these idiots get any kind of influence? I hate the government

woman11017 · 01/01/2018 19:27

How do these idiots get any kind of influence
That man is in loco parentis of children in 'his' schools.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 19:37

How do you test an embryo for its IQ?

Can you?

Surely you can only test the parents for their IQ.

IQ is a clumsy way of measuring intelligence for many, many reasons. It also neglects the fact that intelligence isn't just a score and also takes other forms (emotional intelligence for example).

We also lack knowledge about many things. Humans selectively breeding instead of nature may have many unintended consequences and leave us vulnerable to diseases in a way we can't currently comprehend (for example the sickle cell trait is known to give protection against malaria, so although it produces a horrendous disease, it also has benefits).

OP posts:
QuentinSummers · 01/01/2018 19:53

How do you test an embryo for its IQ?
His argument is:
IQ is 40 -80% inherited therefore there must be a genetic basis. Scientists are doing research to identify these genes. Once they've identified the genes, everyone cpuld have babies via IVF and only implant embryos with intelligence genes.
It's batshit and just shows he's pretty thick and hasn't thought it through. Will cost £££. No definable benefits as no clear link between IQ and life outcomes/value to society.
Complete and utter wazzock.
I am angry but also scared

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 01/01/2018 19:54

Hopefully there will be journalistic enquiries made about the process that lead him to get the post. In other student news

Theresa May left isolated in Cabinet and facing Commons defeat over counting students as immigrants

A new Immigration Bill will allow MPs to force – and almost certainly win – a vote on the controversy

I know it shouldn’t, but it surprises me how full of loathing and contempt some people are. How much of a twat insecure must he be to denigrate and dehumanise people in such an appalling way? That’s a shocker math

woman11017 · 01/01/2018 20:02

I never understood IQ stuff, I think that intelligence can be deliberately ossified, hence brexit, or deliberately exercised, hence OU, Reithian BBC, free HE to working class post war generation.

It's just Nazism, red as you said. They really ought to shut down boys' private schools. Now. They seem to have groomed a generation of fascistic fools.

If you think he is bad, you should see the state of some of the academy chains and exam boards. He has already had access to thousands of kids. At least older college kids could give him a run for his money. School kids and parents live in fear of fines, exclusions, records which follow them through life.

I wonder what it's like to be a black disabled student in one of his schools.

I'm ashamed I even have to write that.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/01/2018 20:05

I remember reading several years ago that a Republican politician was advocating that noone should be allowed to receive any welfare benefits unless they agreed to be sterilised first.

< shudders > I can't remember his name now
However, I suspect we might be shocked at the supporters who would come out of the undergrowth for that, on both sides of the Atlantic.

missmoon · 01/01/2018 20:11

I'm very much not an expert in genetics, but from what I understand from friends working on this, it's very difficult to work out which genes determine behavioural outcomes because:

  • There are several combinations of genetic variants that lead to the same outcome
  • A deficiency in one marker is sometimes (often?) corrected by another
  • Genetic variants only provide a predisposition to a certain outcome, they can be "switched on/off" by environmental factors

But the article is still scary! I might write to my (Tory) MP about this, it's really bad PR.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 20:17

However, I suspect we might be shocked at the supporters who would come out of the undergrowth for that, on both sides of the Atlantic.

I bet a larger number of middle class voters than you'd like to believe, would love the idea of IQ tests or some other sort of educational test before allowing someone to vote (amongst them many remainers it must be stated).

Regardless of how ignorant people are, they should be allowed to vote.

Same goes for reproduction.

Restricting Rights, threatens your own.

The creep to the right is continuing. Normalising so the ordinary dull middle class can claim to be progressive and doing something for society.

OP posts:
OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 01/01/2018 20:23

That’s basically how it works missmoon. Epigenetics control the expression of genes which is why identical twins who share identical DNA can have different characteristics, and for something as complex as intelligence, however you measure that, it would never be down to just one neat, easily isolated gene but interactions between a whole range of them.

RedToothBrush · 01/01/2018 20:36

Hey, remember that time in October 2016 when we were all talking about how the Tory Party conference was spouting immigration policy that put foreigners on lists.

Hey, remember that time in January 2018 when we talked about how the new head of the University regulator was a fan of eugenics.

I remember reading several years ago that a Republican politician was advocating that noone should be allowed to receive any welfare benefits unless they agreed to be sterilised first.

How different is this from requiring women to assert that their third or subsequent children were conceived as a result of rape?

QuentinSummers · 01/01/2018 23:32

Genetic variants only provide a predisposition to a certain outcome, they can be "switched on/off" by environmental factors

Yes! That's exactly why what he says a) shows he's not very well informed and b) is a scary ideological move with no chance of positive outcomes.

Yuck. Just when I think the Tories can't get any worse...

Cailleach1 · 01/01/2018 23:33

Didn't Toby Young's daddy get him into Oxford. He failed a few of his O Levels.

www.dorseteye.com/north/articles/telegraph-columnist-toby-young-reckons-he-was-accepted-into-oxford-by-mistake

We are into madness now. Eugenics? We've been here before. Young comes across as an idiot on DP/SP. And he is on a lot for some reason.

Cailleach1 · 01/01/2018 23:42

Maybe he is deflecting to alleviate the chip on his shoulder. He says himself he didn't really earn his place and it wasn't given to him on merit. He possibly wouldn't be there except for Daddy. Ironic how he is going on about IQ. Then he deflects this by insulting grammar school pupils who did earn their place on merit.

RedToothBrush · 02/01/2018 00:09

What IS it with men who didn't achieve academically or had Daddy bail them out somehow and this weird chip on their shoulder?

Its like a major complex of insecurity thats inflicted on everyone else.

Farage strikes me as similar.
