Hot Tramp, I love you so!

The European Parliament have agreed to progress talks to the next stage. Despite Brexiteers saying its not legally binding, it is apparent that the EU certainly disagree.

Not only that, but the wording of the deal goes further. It binds us to not being able to agree and new trade deals for 2 years.

The All Important Amendment 7 to the Great Repel Bill has been successful. May’s power grab has a set back.

By just FOUR votes the government was defeated. How May will be regretting that pointless election tonight.

Parliament will have a meaningful vote on the exit terms.

But don’t be too excited. Brussels might not like this as May can not guarantee the UK will agree to a deal. It means the the EU are negotiating with parliament NOT May now.

There is also the suggestion that the mood of parliament is changing and is beginning to lean more towards a EFTA / EEA type deal.

But equally this could also send us to the brink with a deal from the EU that could be rejected by parliament.

The stakes just got higher.

@bigchockfrenzy. that's what I meant about the balance sheet - 2016 FS sector paid 71.4bn tax half of which was down to employee tax - average wages of 64k presumably contributing to the local economy.
The debit side has the 1tn of bailout and QE plus the hugely disproportionate infrastructure spend in the south east, arts subsidies & biased spending formulae.
The assumption is that the SE contributes more to the economy than it takes out I believe it's not proven.
The global financial sector gave us the last crash - they're not yet in credit from that.

Anyone else started getting changes to their financial products T&Cs ? I wonder why ?

LurkingHusband · 21/12/2017 11:14

his role of First Secretary won't' necessarily be replaced

So it wasn't needed in the first place ?

It does rather raise that question, lh. This is encouraging news, at least

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is 'eligible for early release' after 600 days in Iranian prison, reveals lawyer

The Daily Heil expressed no sorrow for their savaging of Kate Maltby, which brought her death threats

They only have sorrow for a wealthy Tory
who was a sex pest,
who downloaded huge amounts of extreme porn,
who instigated others to carry out dirty tricks against the then govt of the day, which were considered for criminal prosecution.

That's the Daily Heil, business as usual

LH I sold my UK flat and have moved all my assets out of the UK, except for a small Nationwide account

I put as reference in all the transfers: "Brexit flight 1", 2, etc Wink

If a real crash happens, there might be exchange controls

  • also, remember when banks collapsed in Cyprus , the zillionaires were warned and got their money out bis London, whereas the middle class had their assets chopped

I'd be worried about private pensions in the Uk too - remember the Standard Life debacle ? `

Thank goodness, back in the early 90s, I started all my pensions in DM, later automatically converted to Euros

  • I had observed how Sterling had been sliding for decades against hard currencies.
I'll receive the full UK state pension, but that's only a small part of my pension that won't affect me significantly.

I don’t post on these threads very often as I don’t feel I have much to say but I am so grateful for them. There are so many knowledgeable and insightful posters on here.
Does anyone feel like this is a nightmare that they are going to wake up from? I just cannot understand why a developed country would just hit the self destruct button like this.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/12/2017 12:20

I regard Brexit like a mixture of Suez - the last time the Uk's delutions were slapped down by reality -

and Argentina - the classic case of a formerly prosperous 1st world country turning to populism (about 1930s onwards) and descending into permanent chaos & poverty

I like the way they have just quietly snuck it out before Christmas, where is the build up, the breathless press releases?

@midnightcaterer - all I'm trying to ask is whether the true balance sheet is in credit. The destruction of the city wont evoke much concern outside the south east. Most of the major industries outside FS have been destroyed over the last 30 years - only FS has benefitted from intervention.
I'm suggesting that any attempt to put the case for remain outside the south east has to ignore the FS sector. During the referendum campaign itself there was too much focus on the impact on the city - 'about time' was one view.

Icelandic radio this morning "there is always some kerfuffle in the British government, we thought we could avoid talking about British politics today, but there is always something going on"

BigChocFrenzy · 21/12/2017 13:09

frankie It's what I meant by "we are where we are"
Losing a chunk of the city now would damage the economy and reduce resources available for the poor elsewhere
It might precipitate a crash and downward spiral of the entire economy

The financial world outside the UK regards the City as our main, maybe only, hard asset
Any damage there

The 1 trillion "bailout" in 2008 was mostly guarantees, which were not in fact called upon.
What was actually given to the banks and not yet paid back is a much smaller figure - I read around 150 million - maybe someone in the City could give the exact figures.

Letting the banks collapse in 2008 ?
Would have totally crashed the economy, millions of unemployed as businesses couldn't pay / receive bills, access loans.
Ordinary people would have lost their savings, as well as their jobs.
Britain headed towards Weimar Republic chaos , or Zimbabwe

We can't treat something like the City in isolation - everything interacts
e.g. all the arts etc in London are part of the reason top bankers are reluctant to leave London until they must

BigChocFrenzy · 21/12/2017 13:16

mother I'd expect all unresolved issues for UK expats depends on what the UK govt allows for E27 expats.

Remember, the original EU proposal was to keep all existing rights for all exoats

The right to return after living abroad, the rights of adult children .... all issues where Barnier wants the equivalent for E27 expats, so can't just grant them unilaterally to the UK

LurkingHusband · 21/12/2017 13:23

Furthermore, we have agreed that close family members will be able to join you in the Member State where you live, after the UK has left. This includes existing spouses and civil partners, unmarried partners, children, dependent parents and grandparents, as well as children born or adopted outside of the UK after 29th March 2019.

So, as noted last week better rights for EU nationals than UK citizens.

Good starter.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/12/2017 13:52

CENSORED !

The HoC published the govt sectoral reports on

http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/exiting-the-european-union-committee/publications/

For all the sectors I downloaded - space, aviation, automotive, oil & gas, insurance,....
I think it's the same for all of them

gives a Wiki-standard guide entitled "Description of sector", UK jobs, then EU regs,
then
the impact analysis ... which the HoC Committee states that it received but decided not to publish !

  • in case Barnier doesn't realise the UK is up shit creek ? NO, in case the British public realises Angry

I now routinely expect the govt to censor, to cover up the oncoming disaster,
but I am beyond pissed that the HoC joins them in censorship

Wno the FUCK is on our side ?! AngrySmile
