A question to all those that voted leave

A question to all those that voted leave

I’m not expecting Brexit to go well. It may go well and all the remainers can then feel very silly about their apocalyptic predictions, which I hope is the case. The fact remains that nobody really knows how things are going to pan out. I’m open to being happily surprised by the wonderful future that the brexiters envisage.

What I want to know is, IF things aren’t brilliant after Brexit and your lives are the same or even worse than they were before, you have less money than you did before and life is even harder, more complicated and you have less human rights than ever, then who will you blame?

You won’t be able to blame the EU as they will no longer be your evil overlords. You won’t be able to blame immigrants because many of them will either have left of their own accord or been forced to leave. You won’t be able to blame remainers, because they never wanted any of this in the first place, and warned against it.

Will you blame yourselves? Will you blame the government of the day or a previous government? Will you blame another minority group?

I’m just wondering so I can prepare myself fully for the next attempt to scapegoat.

EU didn't cause the death of the British coal industry.
No, it was the cheap coal imports from overseas.

furryous · 16/11/2017 01:02

I haven't RTFT but how can it get much worse... I'm a 'young person' (ie the remainer demographic) and voted leave, the major reason being every single 'older' (this will make sense in a minute so don't hate me for being discriminatory etc) person that I knew voted leave because in their opinion:

'I've experienced life both in and out of the EU, and it was better out'

Thats a huge reason why I voted the way I did. Agree or not, I'm not old enough to vote on a referendum when I haven't experienced both sides of the coin. You're just hedging your bets as to whether staying or going would be better.

And as for blame, I don't blame democracy for my financial situation. I've obviously lived through both tory and labour governments, and regardless of my vote vs the result... it is what it is. So we just get on with it. That's what we have to do with Brexit.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 06:47

Globalisation and imports will continue after Brexit.

Unelected bureaucrats? MEPs are elected. The civil servants trying to make brexit “work” of course aren’t elected.

Life was better before the eu? Nostalgia is wonderful thing Hmm

Millionsmom · 16/11/2017 07:04

I voted leave because I do remember life before the EU. I won’t ‘blame’ anyone but myself if my life goes down the loo. Most of the ‘poor’ that I know voted leave too.

Look how England carried on in the Scottish referendum, it was pretty much ‘Please stay’. The EU thought the very idea of the UK leaving them was a joke and come over as very patronising in my opinion. Since then, THEY have come over as very offended that we want to leave and appear to me anyway as an abusive partner throwing out all kinds of dire warnings IF we leave.
IF, I mean IF! It’s not best of 3 mate, we’re going.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 07:13

Brexit could very well lead to the break up of the UK

fleurjasmine · 16/11/2017 07:16

Possibly, but not probably. Scotland sent a very clear message about that in June, remember.

Peregrina · 16/11/2017 07:21

I remember life before the EU. Times were mixed - still very grim during the fifties with rationing in the early years, bomb sites in the big cities, housing shortages, and a general dreariness. Things picked up in the early sixites - think of the Beatles and Swinging England, and then industry visible started to go downhill in the late sixties, and the UK was the sick man of Europe.

surferjet · 16/11/2017 07:22

Take no notice of GhostofFrankGrimes she’s the biggest profit of doom on these boards.

Op: I won’t blame anyone. If things go wrong ( & that’s IF) I’d still rather that than be in the EU. When was life always wonderful anyway? I don’t recognise this paradise remainers talk about.

Bearbehind · 16/11/2017 07:27

why on earth do you think the government will be 'out of control' with no checks and balances? Do you honestly think that the EU is there to keep our government under control?

The inconsistency in Leavers arguments never ceases to amaze me.

For many Leavers we're constantly told it was all about sovereignty and taking back control yet now the argument is we always had control and the EU didn't always tell us what to do (which is true)

Most peculiar.

fleurjasmine · 16/11/2017 07:33

I suppose not everyone voted for the same reasons, whatever decision they eventually made.

Brokenbiscuit · 16/11/2017 07:35

The Brexiteers will never blame themselves. They will never admit that they were wrong and that they have completely fucked us all over.

It will be the fault of the government for failing to negotiate the right deal. Or the fault of the EU for trying to punish us. Or the fault of the Remainers for talking the country down. Whatever.

They will seek to blame others for the disaster that is Brexit, just as the Leave campaign sought to blame others for all of our current woes.

There will be no accountability ever.

surferjet · 16/11/2017 07:42

Do the people who voted for Thatcher blame themselves for the Falklands war? The death of the mining industry? The selling off of council houses?

It’s like talking to a load of 5 year olds talking to the remainers on here.

Brokenbiscuit · 16/11/2017 07:48

Do the people who voted for Thatcher blame themselves for the Falklands war? The death of the mining industry? The selling off of council houses?

They should, but they don't. Same old story. No accountability.

twofingerstoEverything · 16/11/2017 08:31

They should, but they don't. Same old story. No accountability.

Quite. Just as the people who voted Tory in the last election will watch the disintegration of the NHS without recognising that that's what they voted for.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 08:33

Actions have consequences surfer. Democracy is a hard won right that should be taken seriously not treated as some sort of larf.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 08:34

Surfer any thoughts on the Irish border?

Lewwat · 16/11/2017 08:58

I get more sense and less insults out of my 5 year old.

Do people who voted for Blair blame themselves for the Iraq war? The thousands of lives lost?
Do they blame themselves for Fordon browns decision to sell our gold?
Thought not

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 09:04

Parties have ideologies. If you vote Tory expect sell offs and privatisation. If you go to a nightclub expect loud music.

BMW6 · 16/11/2017 09:18

I voted Leave, will not blame anyone or anything for the outcome.

Corcory · 16/11/2017 09:35

Bear - you really are good at taking things out of context aren't you! Engineer was suggesting that if we don't have the likes of the EU courts after Brexit then the UK government would be 'out of control and behave without checks and balances.' I disagree and feel that once we have our sovereignty back we can then ensure that the rules and regulations imposed on us can be changed to suit our needs and not the current one size fit all scenario. Because we will have our sovereignty back doesn't mean the government is going to be 'out of control'
You really do never cease to amaze me Bear!

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/11/2017 09:56

Corcory, sovereignty was never lost, brexit white paper, penned by a British hand states as much!

custarddinosaur · 16/11/2017 09:56

We didn't join the EU, we joined the Common Market. It was never intended to become the behemoth it is now.

I know MEPs are elected, but only the British ones were elected by us. All the others weren't, they were elected by their own countries to act in their best interests - not ours.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 16/11/2017 09:57

People vote in general elections for a) what they think will improve their lives and b) what they consider will be best for the country as a whole. We are then usually screwed over by govts who consider their manifesto to be a work of fiction. It would be unfair to blame Blair voters for the illegal, immoral war that followed - who could have predicted that? I had such high hopes for him. We trust our politicians to behave honourably, or at least legally and time and time again they put self interest above all else.

woman11017 · 16/11/2017 10:00

I reckon that few of us have not voted for something, for perfectly logical reasons, that they've gone on to regret
Quite a few who voted leave have changed their minds.
Takes a lot of courage to do so, I'd say.

Peregrina · 16/11/2017 10:34

We now have a government kept in power by an arrangement with the DUP. No one in England, Wales or Scotland could vote for the DUP, who only represent one section of opinion in NI.
