Westminstenders: The Maddest of May and Boris's Dare

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2017 22:43

Boris Johnson just dared May to fire him.

That's what his little rant about £350 million buses is.

Meanwhile its been pointed out that HMRC literally are incapable of handling a no deal and can only cope with an EEA / EFTA deal with no tariffs.

And given how good and on time the government are with computer systems even in a best case scenario are extremely unlikely to crack it in time.

Which makes Hammond's talk of a civil contingence plan, look, well half arsed and lacking.

We also wouldn't have planes able to fly to Europe under a no deal as we would no longer be part of Open Skies. This could leave thousands stranded. But no biggie there.

Meanwhile if the Leave Alliance have things right, May is about to serve our one year notice on leaving the EEA making all these things a reality.

Which is less like shooting yourself in the head and more like shooting yourself in the head, chest, foot, arm, leg and face (for a second time), whilst being run over at the same time.

But hey, Boris Johnson has it sussed in his 10 point plan. Especially the point where he says Brexit will be a success.

If you call success ending democracy, becoming a dictatorship, starving everyone, bankrupting the country and causing civil unrest.

Rule Britannia.

Most of that list, BCF started under Thatcher, this has been, almost, the inevitable result, with the EU buying us some time in the meanwhile.

Interesting long read here with NS.

I don't believe in nationalism myself, but she's an interesting woman, especially on poor old Teresa.

New Europeans organising protest against TM.

Remain/ Leave is now 52/48

Bad news that leave is so high, good news that 52% was won with almost no media coverage, deportation and terrorisation of EU nationals, state racism etc etc. See BCF list. Smile

Shame that May too is such a philistine. She would then know what Shakespeare could have taught her about what damage she's doing to the national name.

"Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed"
Iago^

In Shakespeare's play about a noble black leader.

woman that bank account stuff is scary. My current account was opened before I got my UK passport. I suppose at least I don't have any a decent amount of money!

Bearbehind · 22/09/2017 07:10

If the press release in this article is anything to go by, today's speech is yet more flannel.

I can't get over the arrogance of TM; delaying negotiations this week just to make a speech saying nothing new.

Shall we take bets on how many times she's says 'let me be clear'

mathanxiety · 22/09/2017 07:42

I don't know where it will end [BCF]

I think a good deal of what used to be taken for granted, mainly human rights, individual freedom, the presumption of innocence - or even innocence until actually accused of something - has already ended.

Along with the emasculation of Parliament, the unmistakable gestures to the courts send a message that a revolution is well under way.

I agree with Woman it started under Thatcher, and also that the halcyon period in the EU has been an intermission between Act I and Act II.

For Friday, something beautiful in England, a light show ( designed by a Dutch man) to show how the land has been changed by the sea.

"I agree with Woman it started under Thatcher, and also that the halcyon period in the EU has been an intermission between Act I and Act II."

This is so disconcerting. My family along with many families I know only exist because of the UK being a member state of the EU. I moved to London to study in the early 90s, received a range of EU related grants for further study, worked in an emerging industry where almost all companies were / are international and met my dh who is from another EU country settling here and starting family. My dc are trilingual, have dual citizenship and we feel very much at home where we are in the UK.

It's saddening and worrying to think that our lives have been made possible due to "an intermission between Act I and Act II" but I feel it's a astute description. Sad

If and when the EU is made out to be unreasonable by not accepting the ridiculous deluded offer May will make today I fear that camp Leave will go into full on warmongering mode blaming the EU for their own incompetence, gas lighting the British public and painting the EU and EU citizens as the 'enemy'. I fear that once that happens life will no longer be tolerable for my family here.

I have naturalised and hold dual citizenship. I feel that I have to contact my bank and various other institutions to update my citizenship status to avoid becoming victim to another bureaucratic mistake. Sad

I haven't been able to sleep well since the announcement of today's speech and have this horrible feeling of vertigo whenever I think about what comes next. What a despicable bunch of useless and small minded Tories.

Thanks to everyone on these threads.

Badders08 · 22/09/2017 08:07

Worrying times
Dh - and I suspect many many others - are totally in denial about what's been happening/going to happen

Peregrina · 22/09/2017 08:09

individual freedom
Yes, I know threads about threads are wrong, but there was the one yesterday where the 19 year old had no ID on her. The number of people saying that she should be carrying ID at all times was astounding. Not to buy alcohol, just to go about her normal life.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 22/09/2017 08:26

On another thread and one person says....Why don't you just leave if you hate it so much? I think why should I have to.
But actually I'd like to leave but my kids are at secondary school and one is in midst of gcses. My kids are likely to emigrate. So we will be a split family.
The UK is going to ge like Ireland used to be. The young will emigrate.
Sorry I pop up every now and again but follow the thread. I'm just so cross that people can't see what's happening. I'm thinking disaster capitalism. Not necessarily by the government but those behind the scenes.

Cherrypi · 22/09/2017 08:30

That bank account stuff is very "The Handmaid's tale". What happens if the EU just say no to whatever Theresa May offers today as I imagine they will if she hasn't figured out a solution for Northern Ireland?

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 08:34

I feel that I have to contact my bank and various other institutions to update my citizenship status to avoid becoming victim to another bureaucratic mistake.

May is doing what we expected, and going after everyone now.

Banks are trawling 70 million accounts.

We are definitely all in this together now.

And it's not reported anywhere. Hmm

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 08:41

Although in fairness, 70 million is probably a pretty accurate figure on the number of migrants to these celtic shores. Grin She's just implementing a hostile environment for everyone, fair enough.

RedToothBrush · 22/09/2017 08:47

Laura Kuenssberg @ bbclaurak
No 10's hopes today - unstick the talks before next week, reassure biz and EU citizens who live in UK - lets see where we are by end of play

I rarely carry ID. Including bank cards.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 22/09/2017 08:53

Banks and building societies are to carry out immigration checks on 70m current accounts from January in the biggest extension of Theresa May’s plans to create a “hostile environment” for illegal immigrants in Britain, the Guardian has learned

Excuse me whilst I piss myself laughing at the car crash that's going to be with banking IT systems and call centres in India.

Have you living in the UK your whole life? Yes. Are you a British citizen? Yes. When is your DOB? 1/1/1934

Our records show you are a 20 year old illegal immigrant from Nigeria. We are freezing your bank account. No you can't talk to anyone in branch.

Banks are in no way set up or able to process this kind of request from government. Angela Rippon will be very busy on Daytime TV.

TheElementsSong · 22/09/2017 08:53

That bank account stuff is very "The Handmaid's tale".

Yes it is. Really creepy. As with the schools and medical practitioners being expected to act as informants.

But, apparently, it's all good and even desirable, according to the Rulez Iz Rulez crowd, who now seem to be the majority. And yet they say there is no resemblance between us now, and what happened in the 1930s.

Peregrina · 22/09/2017 08:53

70 million bank accounts, and of course, the sad thing is, is that many ordinary bank employees will not question, or feel they have to go along with it. Or they may be forced to comply by senior management. I wonder just how many legitimate residents will have their accounts stopped? Truly we are in the early stages of fascism, which Leavers hate us telling them, but it is so.

TheElementsSong · 22/09/2017 08:55

I wonder just how many legitimate residents will have their accounts stopped?

Cross-post Peregrina and you said what I was thinking, but more eloquently.

I do wonder whether I personally will be affected. I was not a British citizen when I opened my bank accounts more than 2 decades ago.

Badders08 · 22/09/2017 08:59

I'm getting more and more worried about my mum...shes lived here since the she was 18
Are they going to go after Irish citizens? (Like Thatcher tried to in the 80s)

Melassa · 22/09/2017 09:06

Do banks in the U.K. even request DOB or nationality when opening an account? I remember opening one with an electricity bill, I don't think I had to fill in details other than name and address. This was in the 80/90s though so maybe it's been tightened up. Just wondering how they're going to deem someone foreign without that info?
Here and in France I needed photo ID, a certificate of residence and/carte de séjour when opening bank accounts. Not least because if you were non resident you had fewer services and paid more fir your account.

EmilyAlice · 22/09/2017 09:09

Yes, we carry ID at all times in France. Used to be passport but now we have Carte de Séjour for permanent residence, with photo id and fingerprints embedded.

Badders08 · 22/09/2017 09:11

Im trying to remember how I opened my bank account 20 odd years ago
....
I think I filled in a form from a newspaper and sent it off to a po box!
Then I got sent the forms to fill in.
I dont remember being asked for proof of identity or proof of salary??

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 09:14

Badders; there are 70 million of us she's 'going after'.
It's utter bollox.
How many british banks can manage day to day banking work without messing up?
Excuse me whilst I piss myself laughing exactly.

Hitler, her apparent role model, used scientific management/Taylorist techniques to make sure his fascism worked efficiently.
She's a cut price fascist.

Badders08 · 22/09/2017 09:15

What a bloody mess

woman11017 · 22/09/2017 09:17

@jameschappers
In 18 months' time, Brexit will be like the Iraq War. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who admits to supporting it #stopbrexit

HashiAsLarry · 22/09/2017 09:18

melassa certainly within the last 10 years nationality is recorded on opening a bank account or taking another product. Normally linked with whatever is on your photo Id. So although I've always been a dual British citizen, my accounts mainly have me put down as Irish as that was the passport I held at the time. Put down is worded like that on purpose btw, as it was always claimed it needed to match formal id.
