Westminstenders: The Maddest of May and Boris's Dare

RedToothBrush · 16/09/2017 22:43

Boris Johnson just dared May to fire him.

That's what his little rant about £350 million buses is.

Meanwhile its been pointed out that HMRC literally are incapable of handling a no deal and can only cope with an EEA / EFTA deal with no tariffs.

And given how good and on time the government are with computer systems even in a best case scenario are extremely unlikely to crack it in time.

Which makes Hammond's talk of a civil contingence plan, look, well half arsed and lacking.

We also wouldn't have planes able to fly to Europe under a no deal as we would no longer be part of Open Skies. This could leave thousands stranded. But no biggie there.

Meanwhile if the Leave Alliance have things right, May is about to serve our one year notice on leaving the EEA making all these things a reality.

Which is less like shooting yourself in the head and more like shooting yourself in the head, chest, foot, arm, leg and face (for a second time), whilst being run over at the same time.

But hey, Boris Johnson has it sussed in his 10 point plan. Especially the point where he says Brexit will be a success.

If you call success ending democracy, becoming a dictatorship, starving everyone, bankrupting the country and causing civil unrest.

Rule Britannia.

Jeremy Corbyn mocks Piers Morgan in Spanish after meeting with Arsenal star Hector Bellerin

The Labour leader tweeted at both the Arsenal player and the TV presenter in Spanish, knowing Mr Morgan would not understand

" He [BJ] knows that once people hear the thing they want to hear, then getting them to believe something else is near to impossible. Even if the first piece of information is an outright lie and the second is cold, hard, proven fact.

I think the Conservatives are big on the nudge theory. I found the Nudge Theory and Thinking, Fast and Slow (Daniel Kahneman) very eye opening in many ways. It's a little bit pop psychology but provides good insight in motivating manipulating or 'nudging' people's behaviour and attitudes and choices.

4myPony · 19/09/2017 13:13

Increasingly used by the NHS for health promotion but also by government shaping political opinion.

woman11017 · 19/09/2017 13:17

When really the membership pays manifold dividends.

Human rights are cheap at the price.

But if the english toffocracy insist on being so selfish, EU wealth redistribution could have saved them this impending civil war. We may just yet succeed.

I think there will be a little jeremy corbyn for xmas.

Hope he can persuade the EU to accept our heartfelt apology, and reparations payments to the EU/British nationals treated so appallingly.

LurkingHusband · 19/09/2017 13:21

Be curious to see if Jezzas linguistic skills add or detract from his support. Remember, "speaking foreign" is not something the English (not "British") are too comfortable with. As the Welsh and Gaelic speaking peoples of the "U"K have learned to their cost.

woman11017 · 19/09/2017 13:25

Football is the international language, LH and he doesn't forget which team he has been told he supports.

LurkingHusband · 19/09/2017 13:56

I think the Conservatives are big on the nudge theory.

When it suits them. (Which means there's a way for public money to be spent on private firms). Otherwise they are much more the sledgehammer approach (see workfare, ESA sanctions)

School nurses could be forced to deny migrant children treatment under new rules

How would that square with protecting girls from FGM ?

HashiAsLarry · 19/09/2017 14:24

woman did he also say 'with knives?
Or is this the latest way to discredit Chappers, I mean if Crosby is behind him, etc etc

woman11017 · 19/09/2017 14:33

Hashi Crosby's feed, which I think is real, it's pretty damning of may et al. It's the funny thing with chappers, he knows them all professionally, is why no one knows quite what to do with him.

rtb so we go back to members of the public acting as on behalf of the government...
This is REALLY becoming a proper fascist state.

Tbh, as a 'foreigner' I'm getting scared. For me but also for my dcs (even though they are actually British...)

I do try to post in the right forum ... I posted this in "in the news" earlier ...

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/paedophile-hunters-police-work-with-vigilantes-senior-officer-dark-justice-the-hunted-one-stings-a7952986.html

Police say they are not ‘winning the conversation’ attempting to stop groups launching own stings

Police could “potentially” have to work with controversial vigilante groups that target alleged paedophiles, a senior officer had said.

Groups like Dark Justice and The Hunted One have previously been accused of putting children and police investigations at risk with unofficial “stings” but figures obtained by the BBC show an increase in prosecutions where their evidence has been used.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey, the national lead for child protection at the National Police Chiefs’ Council, told the BBC: “Vigilante groups are putting the lives of children at risk.

“I’m not going to condone these groups and I would encourage them all to stop, but I recognise that I am not winning that conversation.

“I think [working with vigilantes] is something we’re going to have to potentially have to look at, yes, but it comes with some real complexity.”

More than 44 per cent (114 of 259) cases over the crime of meeting a child following sexual grooming used this evidence in 2016, compared to 11 per cent (20 of 176) cases in 2014 (11.3 per cent).

One of the most high profile groups, Dark Justice, claimed it has aided the arrest of 119 potential sex offenders, with 53 convicted so far after operations seeing members pose as children online to snare suspected paedophiles at an undercover meeting.

Another group, The Hunted One, came under scrutiny after members confronted a man who allegedly travelled to Bluewater shopping centre in the belief he was meeting a 14-year-old girl for sex.

During the filming, another group of men burst in and assaulted the man as he was being questioned by vigilantes, causing security guards and police to intervene.

Mirza Beg, 29, was later jailed at Maidstone Crown Court for 40 months.

Chief Constable Bailey warned such groups only advertise the “cases where they believe it has gone well”.

“I don’t encourage or condone the activities of these paedophile hunters,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“They don’t take into consideration the safeguarding risks to children, the implications of a failed operation or the compromise of one of our own operations.

“So I don’t believe that vigilantes are the answer to this problem.”

Supporters of The Hunted One and Dark Justice were celebrating his comments on social media on Monday, although some were cautious over “interference” by police.

As well as concerns over innocent people being smeared online, the broadcast of live “stings” and other evidence could cause trials to collapse if they are used by defence lawyers to argue juries may be biased.

The self-styled paedophile hunters have been urged to “leave it to the professionals” in August, amid increased police efforts to combat online grooming.

The Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, announced £20m funding to extend an initiative where undercover detectives operated in internet chat rooms and forums used by suspected offenders.

“Child sexual exploitation has a profoundly devastating impact on the lives of its victims, and it’s a national policing priority to take on the threat it poses,” she said.

“We believe this project has shown early promise in tackling these complex crimes through an innovative approach.”

Forty-three people were arrested and 19 were charged as a result of a year-long pilot led by Norfolk Police, and officers believe they have safeguarded at least 25 children.

I don't think this has been posted. Apologies if it has it is hard to keep up if you fall behind.

It is about Rudd defying the rule of law three times.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/19/home-secretary-courts-amber-rudd-deport-samim-bigzad

Lets see what Lidington has to say on this. Presuming they still give a nod to the rule of law. If nothing, he is as morally bankrupt as the others, in my opinion.

If this isn't a scandal, I don't know what is. Why should anyone else abide by a court ruling if the government don't? What are the consequences for Jo Blogs.

Thanks for that Calleach1

The test for her successor, David Lidington, has come now. He is the defender of the rule of law in the executive. He must make it clear that this arrogant disdain for the law will not occur in the future, or ensure that Rudd does so. If he does not act, I cannot see him lasting much longer than Truss did.

Legality is officially relative now?

LurkingHusband · 19/09/2017 16:41

Why should anyone else abide by a court ruling if the government don't? What are the consequences for Joe Bloggs?

In terms of "what's changed ?", not much. It's interesting to speculate what would have happened if someone had tried to intervene - in effect to prevent the state breaking the law (the Nuremberg defence ?) ? If they had been attacked, and used reasonable force to defend themselves, would they have been liable to criminal charges ?

There aren't many cases in the UK of the public getting redress over illegal state actions. Most recently ask the people illegally made to work for their benefits under workfare. They got fuck all of fuck all.

That senior civil servant who sometimes posts on Richard North's blog has worried me again about the govt contingency plans:

"I cannot possibly comment but ration books being printed is a rumour going round,
as I said I cannot comment"

[to be delivered] "By post as they did for petrol in 1974"

< rationbooks for petrol, or for food ? >
