Westminstenders: Boom. The Brexit Backlash starts to hit.

RedToothBrush · 27/08/2017 00:49

So it turns out that immigration figures that stated students overstayed were wrong. The home office knew this. And sat on it. Since 2015. Under Theresa.

That smells a bit doesn't it?

Imagine it: "Let's do lunch Paul. I'll cover up and give you a nice immigration story for your front page. In return, crown me PM."

Then tonight BOOM. Labour look like they have made a move. Soft very swishy Brexit. Even less brexity than the Beano Brexit that the Tories have been trying to announce on the quiet over the summer whilst Brexiteers are on holiday.

amp.theguardian.com/global/2017/aug/26/labour-calls-for-lengthy-transitional-period-post-brexit
Labour makes dramatic shift on Brexit and single market
Party opens clear divide with Tories, with support for free movement and paying into EU budgets for up to four years

Labour is to announce a dramatic policy shift by backing continued membership of the EU single market beyond March 2019, when Britain leaves the EU, establishing a clear dividing line with the Tories on Brexit for the first time.

In a move that positions it decisively as the party of “soft Brexit”, Labour will support full participation in the single market and customs union during a lengthy “transitional period” that it believes could last between two and four years after the day of departure, it is to announce on Sunday.

This will mean that under a Labour government the UK would continue to abide by the EU’s free movement rules, accept the jurisdiction of the European court of justice on trade and economic issues, and pay into the EU budget for a period of years after Brexit, in the hope of lessening the shock of leaving to the UK economy. In a further move that will delight many pro-EU Labour backers, Jeremy Corbyn’s party will also leave open the option of the UK remaining a member of the customs union and single market for good, beyond the end of the transitional period.

Why would Labour suddenly do this? It's not just because of the youth vote. What about their leave voters?

Faisal Islam on the subject:
2. On Labour Leavers is very very interesting and involves quite the psephological judgement re the election....
...the calculation appears to be that Labour Leave voters had the chance to vote for Theresa May's brand of Brexit, and bar 5 seats, said No
Was that because Lableave voters were already signalled "hard Brexit"? Or many millions such voters much more concerned about other things?

Have Labour been polling their voters on this?

Theresa has also apparently set her sell by date: Friday 30th August 2019.

Theresa May sets date she'll quit as Prime Minister - giving herself time to see Britain through Brexit

The longer the transition and the squishier it gets, the more the more you wonder.

Mr Barnier will enjoy his coffee and newspapers tomorrow as he prepares for round two of Brexit talks starting next week.

The question on his mind most: Will David Davis remember to bring his notes this time?

Has Connor Burns MP, PPS, been trolling Barnier on Twitter?

Being reported by David Allen Green:

HashiAsLarry · 30/08/2017 14:55

Beat me to it random

Does anyone else hear 'the Maybot' in their heads after reading about the Tory 'activate'?

woman12345 · 30/08/2017 14:58

Well, it's a funny thread though random
@davidallengreen

2/2 ...someone with access to exact same papers and briefings on Brexit which, say, a PPS to a foreign secretary would have.

Rotten luck.

LurkingHusband · 30/08/2017 15:01

Apparently the British public not voting Tory was "a mistake", according to William Hague. Strangely though, the British public voting for Brexit was not a mistake ?

I think the only mistake here, is giving the oxygen of publicity to William Hague.

It is a bit odd:

Imagine having your Twitter account hacked by someone who knew the difference between liability coming from a directive and a regulation.

1/2 So: the @ConorBurnsUK hacker is either an expert on EU law and/or the Brexit budget issue or...

2/2 ...someone with access to exact same papers and briefings on Brexit which, say, a PPS to a foreign secretary would have.

prettybird · 30/08/2017 15:09

That woman (I refuse to repeat her name as she just loves the publicity and even saying "woman" is demeaning to females Hmm) is a worthless piece of @!%$ with her @"Your life is of no consequence to me, son. Nor your thoughts. I stand with the 17 million" comment. No apology or acknowledgement that her criticism was unfounded. Angry

woman12345 · 30/08/2017 15:13

random there are suggestions that it's not exactly a real hack?

prettybird Yep, on that person. Maugham has also had death threats this week from a twitter Leave account and reported them to police.

HashiAsLarry · 30/08/2017 15:20

On that woman, she's quite indicative of a lot of brexiteer attitudes like we've seen here. When proven wrong there no acknowledgement, just abuse along the lines of 'your opinion doesn't matter because you voted incorrectly/are foreign/have left the country'

RandomlyGenerated · 30/08/2017 15:25

random there are suggestions that it's not exactly a real hack?

That's the implication - as the tweets were sent over a period of three hours and are, , unusually well-informed.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/08/2017 15:27

Knope You are doing a brilliant kindness for your mum Flowers and I know tough and heartbreaking it can be, caring for your mum.

It seemed so cruel that the strong person who was my rock when I was little had regressed to toddlerhood and then babyhood Sad

There are some absolute twats on Mumsnet, who want to shame everyone not working full time or even claiming tax credits etc

BlueEyeshadow · 30/08/2017 15:27

Eeeeeowwwfftz Yes, it was Blair who started the rot with academies, but Gove who added the element of compulsion and insane ideology. [/tangent]

prettybird · 30/08/2017 15:28

Indeed Hashi

Have I mentioned that I was born in Africa Shock, my father, brother and I brought into this country by my Scottish born by chance during WW2 mother Shock, am naturalised British Shock and have a German surname Shock?

How dare I have a Remain opinion and stay in this country?! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 30/08/2017 15:29

Aha ! < peers under Knope moustache to see Badders Smile >

Arborea · 30/08/2017 15:30

I never really understood why vocational work is so under paid. Nurses and carers deserve more.

It's because it's "women's work" innit?

Knope2020 · 30/08/2017 15:43

Oh ffs
Hague has crawled out from under his bloody rock, has he?
Ugh

Knope2020 · 30/08/2017 15:49

Alright bigchoc!? 🖑

Exactly.
Women's work. How many men do you know who are carers for elderly parents?
I have known 2 in my whole life (both unmarried men who lived with said parent)

When the govt talk about "people" looking after family members they mean "women"

I've tried to calculate how much I have saved the sainted taxpayer over the years in hospital transport/ambulance call outs/home care/emergency care/post op care....it must be a fair bit by now...

What REALLY worries me is the 1000s of young people and children who are unpaid carers...its a national disgrace

Peregrina · 30/08/2017 16:06

Apparently the British public not voting Tory was "a mistake", according to William Hague.

Not in this household it wasn't. Nor were our sterling efforts working on the election campaign to boot our Tory MP out. To see a 9500 majority destroyed was a most satisfying result.

Yes, yes, yes to your post of 12:46 red - been there, seen that.

LurkingHusband · 30/08/2017 16:16

Surprised no one found Hagues comments more sinister Hmm

Trying to recall the last time any politician dared to claim that the electorate was "wrong" ?????

It's a high risk strategy. If the electorate was "wrong" to reject the Tories, then were they "wrong" in 2010 when they rejected Labour ?

Were they "wrong" in 1997 when they rejected the Tories ? Or 2001 ? Or 2005 ?

And, (as noted) if the electorate can be "wrong" to not deliver a thumping Tory majority, then why can't it be equally "wrong" in voting to leave the EU ?

And, if June was the "wrong" result, Mr. Hague, then what exactly are you suggesting we do about it ?

Seem he's openly calling for another election ? We need to correct this mistake ...(suits me ...)

Knope2020 · 30/08/2017 16:19

I agree LH
It's disturbing

HashiAsLarry · 30/08/2017 16:40

Personally I don't think they were wrong in not voting Tory in 2017. I think they were wrong for voting for them in 2015. This is all their sorry mistake.

whatwouldrondo · 30/08/2017 16:58

It shows the depths of arrogance and delusion that grips the Tories. Like a spoilt child it is always someone else's fault, never their own and so they blindly go on in an orgy of entitlement and self gratification, not listening to anyone. Thank you William I really genuinely could not understand how they could be blundering on regardless after the message they were sent at the election but now I get it. I always thought he was a bit of a prat and no leader but an honest and sensible one at least so if he is infected then it is entrenched.......

LurkingHusband · 30/08/2017 17:01

Women's work. How many men do you know who are carers for elderly parents?

My (little) DB become a carer for my DM until she passed earlier this year, and is now de facto carer for my DF, who is blind (and in his late 80s).

Since I am effectively MrsLHs carer, there's little I can do Sad - even if we lived in the same cities (which we don't).

One thing we have learned is that there is zero acknowledgement of the role of carers in all areas of society. Clearly not the done thing ...

I suggest it's the "British way" to sweep problems out of sight so we can all enjoy the mass delusion that "everything is alright" and it takes a Grenfell, or Lord Shaftesbury, or Barnardo, or Chad Varah to draw our attention to problems.

whatwouldrondo · 30/08/2017 17:04

Knope Flowers I don't think that most people understand what care of the elderly requires, in terms of patience, care and skills. I am sure for people, probably possibly our ignorant naive friend it is just a matter of keeping them out of sight and out of mind as opposed to all that is required to give dignity and respect and the specialised care depending on whether it is dementia care or other health issues.

Knope2020 · 30/08/2017 17:09

I think that's right LH
My mum and dad became carers for my GM....so they ended up caring for an elderly woman with Parkinson's and 3 kids under 4!
I was told last year that I no longer qualify for the flu jab as a carer because I'm not in receipt of carers allowance ....i don't do enough hours a week to qualify
I got flu
I was ill for 6 weeks
Mum ended up more or less alone all that time :(
She has copd - I had to stay away and had 2 poorly children to look after too :(
What a joke
