Westministenders: The bookends to a year of political chaos. Just how far have we come?

The 15th June 2016.

The Thames was filled with a flotilla of boats in a publicity stunt for the Leave campaign to draw attention to fisheries. Nigel Farage and Kate Hoey in their heads thought they were Leonardo and Kate, but the moment was rather more titanic in nature and could not have been more Alan Partridge if they had tried. Coming up behind was Bob Gedolf in a shameful and cringeworthy display of swearing and abuse that really didn’t help the Remain camp in anyway. Largely unnoticed was a small boat with a family following it all unfold…

The next day things went from fiasco to horror.

Farage unveiled the Dog Whistle Poster and Jo Cox was murdered. And the UK seemed set on its course for 7 days later when the world was turned upside down by the referendum itself.

14th June 2017.

Fast forward 365 days later and another tragedy unfolded. This time of a very different nature but with no less political significance.
Grenfell.

A moment of national shame. A symbol of so many things that had come to pass in the previous twelve months.

The election just the previous week had changed the direction of travel we seemed to be headed and left the Prime Minister exposed and looking wildly out of touch. The Maybot was given one more chance.

And the Maybot seems to be failing the test of her party who had the grace to grant her a second chance.

The Queen dressed in the same shade of blue, May delivered her ‘victory speech’ in, ignored the security threat and visited the ranks of the poor and the forgotten. A deliberate message to May not to forget who she serves? A Queen who feels aggrieved and angry by May’s behaviour? Who knows.

As for Brexit. The government looks lost. Adrift. The ‘Fight of the Summer’ over the EU’s plan for talks sounds out the window despite the denials from the Brexit Department. Hard Brexit is still on the cards. Apparently. But what does anyone believe now? May’s and the Brexiteers domination of the agenda is shattered, its power starting to be questioned.

What next?

This evening the anger is building.

Who knows, what will happen. Some of it might be predictable, but the future is far from certain and we have definitely entered a new era. We just don’t know who will lead it, or what its ambition or what the end goal now is.

What we do know, more acutely than ever is that we are all human and the wise words of Jo Cox about having ‘More in Common’ ring though ever more strongly.

Once again we feel ‘on the brink’.

Well, this is kind of random, but here are some people's views on questions you never thought needed answering...presented by YouGov

What if we had a socialist government; Owning a signed copy of Mein Kampf; Fame and personality

So No 10 said DUP-Conservative deal would be published "if and when" it is agreed... so I therefore asked why schedule a Queens Speech?
goes back to something I said on Thursday: DUP appear to have reassured on confidence for minority Tory Gov not yet done deal on "supply"
Still, a number on here have asked about how much "caretaker" Government can do - answer... this is not a caretaker Gov. Full minority Govt
if you go to the Cabinet Manual, it explains: "if there is no overall majority" purdah remains if "significant doubt" over confidence
...so DUP gave just enough confidence to Civil Service (though terms not public) to remove "significant doubt" & for PM to form minority Gov
...& schedule QS for Wed. As yet, no proper deal finished and signed - in any event, votes on Queens Speech are next Thursday, poss Wed
... Next Thursday (29th) is the big vote on the Queen's Speech. And Wednesday (28th) or Thurs "there could be votes on amendments" say HoC
...Opposition expected to table amendments to QS - remember Cameron was obliged to accept one on EU a couple of years ago. Same could happen

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 19/06/2017 13:44

I thought I had my head wrapped around the Queen's speech and how having a two year session would allow for more time to push through legislation but I had mistakenly (I think) thought that there was to be no Queen's speech this year, not next year.

I assume I've got it wrong if they're cracking on with a speech - does that mean they'll put something forward this year but then won't do so next year to buy extra time to work on what's been tabled in this Queen's speech?

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 19/06/2017 13:47

I think it means there will be no significant changes to policy at all for 2 years. Unless it is EU related

So no pulling back on austerity really at all. Just won't talk about it. Probably no Grammer schools or very few. Questions about anti terrorist legislation - they probably will go for that. But plan is to talk about Brexit for the next 2 years. Can't wait. Not.

Too many tragedies and problems to keep track of atm Sad
And when we need the most competent govt ever, we have this nasty squabbling chaotic shower in charge Angry

Met say Grenfell till now 79 and rising, but shouldn't be any further big increase in numbers:

ElenaGreco123 · 19/06/2017 13:50

I agree that QS will have just one topic: Brexit and no details. It will be a short one.

whatwouldrondo · 19/06/2017 13:53

As evidence of the damage done by modern 70s teaching methods, I offer you "Canis est in laboratum" as all that remains of the Latin I learned from the Nuffield audio visual Latin course. We followed the everyday lives of a family and their servants and dog in Pompeii (it didn't end well, for the family, or us with the sudden jump from the dog being in the study to having to translate Pliny). We had cartoon books to go with the episodes, which you kept in a blue folder which had "Quid Novi?" printed on it. That is the only other thing I remember.......

LurkingHusband · 19/06/2017 13:55

with the caveat that I am not a constitutional lawyer, there has to be a budget presented before April 4 (or 5 ?) next year, or the government will not be able to lawfully collect tax.

That said, Tory governments have form for breaking the law, and then passing laws to make it retrospectively legal.

BiglyBadgers · 19/06/2017 14:17

The queens speech with just be "brexit means brexit" repeated for 20 minutes. Then the queen will go back to watching the racing.

lalalonglegs · 19/06/2017 14:21

I'm still staggered by this no Queen's Speech next year. It seems very open to abuse especially given the current bunch of constitution deniers we have.

0hCrepe · 19/06/2017 14:35

Very similar to Ron, in our Latin lessons we had a family with a dog called Cerberus. Cerberus est in horto is all I remember.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2017 14:46

lh wrt the next budget, it would be v surprising for any Tory MP not to vote in favourite (excl illness etc)
and it should contain suficient pork for the Dangerously Unhinged Party to support.

I expect some Labour amendments, maybe even proposing an alternative budget to keep the troops happy.

Unless the govt has clearly swung towards an EEA / EFTA Brexit .... in which case Tory Ultras may threaten - and use - the nuclear option

However, our speculation is all dependent on the govt not collapsing before April, after an internal Brexit split, damaging leadership contest, falling out with DUP, more cocking up of disasters ...

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2017 14:48

I only remember boring bits
amo, amas, amat,
mensa, mensae

It's the perennially useful reminders from then:
"Post hoc ergo procter hoc" ....

LurkingHusband · 19/06/2017 14:49

Anyone seen this ?

The Northern Irish unionist party wants the government to stump up £1bn for the families of people killed or injured in republican terror attacks that were backed by Libya, according to the Sun on Sunday.

Colonel Gadaffi, the former leader of Lybia who was killed in 2011, supplied the IRA with arms and Semtex for bomb attacks in the UK for almost 30 years.

(contd)

LurkingHusband · 19/06/2017 14:50

presumably, calling it "compensation" is an end-run around the Barnett convention ?

squishysquirmy · 19/06/2017 14:55

We followed Quintus, Cerberus, Metella etc in Pompei too - and that was at school in the 21st Century. I enjoyed it and remembered it as being quite well taught though-maybe I was just very lucky with the teacher we had! Quite the cliff hanger ending. We had to do Latin GCSE to find out who survived...

PattyPenguin · 19/06/2017 15:10

Budgets are now supposed to take place only once a year, in autumn, with the next one due in autumn 2017. Unless there has been / will be a change of mind...

www.gov.uk/government/news/7-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-budget-timetable

whatwouldrondo · 19/06/2017 16:12

Squishy I seem to recall we were being experimented on in the first trials, hopefully it has been better developed in the thirty years since! Plus it did not benefit from being taught by a group of gay bluestockings who regarded teenage girls and their learning needs as a cross they had to bear, the Latin teacher used to switch on the projector and get on with the marking which required a lot of huffing and pressing very hard on the red pen she scored through everything ....

CeciledeVolanges · 19/06/2017 16:52

Surely "post hoc ergo propter hoc"?

CeciledeVolanges · 19/06/2017 17:02

Tacete might be a useful bit of Latin: means "shut up"

CeciledeVolanges · 19/06/2017 17:03

Also had someone say "da mini basia mille" which I believe is Catullus and I thought extremely romantic but that could be because I am quite unusual

Sostenueto · 19/06/2017 17:27

Boris sister says in radio interview Theresa May like a victim of Grenfell because of way she has been treated.

CeciledeVolanges · 19/06/2017 17:28

That's a pity. I was almost starting to respect her for joining the LDs and campaigning against Brexit

Sostenueto · 19/06/2017 17:29

Tacet means silent in music.
