Westminstenders: The Brexit Apprentice

Theresa May is increasing looking like she is running an episode of the Apprentice with two teams trying to compete in their plan for Brexit. Complete with the obligatory reprehensible contestants.

On one side we have Team Creationists intent on hard Brexit and on the other we have Team Sensibles desperate to get a softer deal.
May herself has been held hostage by seasoned expert negotiators the DUP. Once No 10 has reported the deal was done, only for the DUP to say it wasn’t. Then it said, it would be settled today. But the DUP disagreed and said ‘the weekend’. Now its 'next week'.

Meanwhile the Queen has been messed about with a scapegoat over when her Queen’s Speech will be. It’s likely to be a week on Monday.
Meanwhile the Brexit department is also in chaos.

The Number two in the department was sacked and replaced by a Remainer, and the number three quit amongst reports that he no longer thought Brexit was achievable and that there was no way that the Great Repeal Act could pass through the Lords. He has been replaced by the Head of the infamous Arch-Brexit Whatsapp group.

Oh and Gove got hired. Nuff said on that one.

After some slight back tracking from David Davis, Hard Brexit is still on in all its glory. Negotiations are going ahead next week. Well that’s what we are saying. The EU, on the other hand, don’t won’t to go ahead until we have an officially sworn in government. Which seems pretty fair enough.

Tune in to find out which Team wins this week’ The Brexit Apprentice

Fairer taxes in relation to the size of property owned and local re-investment would come way ahead of requisition for me which would surely involve lawyers and legal issues.

Sostenueto · 16/06/2017 09:20

What I just put peregina, I don't think anyone reads my posts lol! Though I did spell His name wrong. ( waves to peregina xx ).

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 16/06/2017 09:24

Except it will be too late then

I really can't get my head around so many people still backing Brexit.

For years and years the EU has been a scapegoat and it's still happening. I'm really hoping that inflation means people start to wake up to what Brexit will actually do to this country.

Peregrina · 16/06/2017 09:27

Sorry missed that Sostenueto. Although I did add that the will of the people was ignored and he's been installed in Downing Street, by the back door as it were. Why on earth can't Treeza ditch Advisers and start using the expertise of her Cabinet?

Sostenueto · 16/06/2017 09:27

I also think that as Grenfell becomes steadily politicised the actual number of those who perished may be stifled because it will be so terrifying. Looking at number of flats per floor (6) r average number in each flat (4) and we can assume anyone from 18th floor up didn't stand a chance so 6 x 24 = 144 plus the 17 already confirmed. Yes, identification will be impossible but I think there will be a concerted effort to conceal real number of fatalities.

Sostenueto · 16/06/2017 09:28

Exactly peregina so right.

citroenpresse · 16/06/2017 09:32

Red Nearly 15 years away and just forget what the UK can be like sometimes...

But Is it really not possible to make council housing an asset? Design-led. Ergonomic. Something to be proud of? Or would that ALSO invoke a sense of envy/resentment?

citroenpresse · 16/06/2017 09:33

Sos not true! But these threads move so fast, hard to keep up!

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 16/06/2017 09:33

Yes element the express is certainly dying off with its readership 350k distribution a year. The mail not so. Still way over 1.5m

Jen725 @ jen725
Looking somewhat murky for emma dent coad. If residents want her to go she will have to

Jim Waterson @ jimwaterson
Is this due to her role on the board?

Emma Dent Coad is the new Labour MP for Kensington. This is part of her wiki entry:

Dent Coad was born in Chelsea as the youngest of six in an Anglo-Spanish family, and has lived in North Kensington since 1986. She was elected to Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council in 2006, representing Golborne ward. She is a member of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority and was a council-appointed board member of Kensington and Chelsea TMO from 2008 to 31 October 2012.

She was on the board of the housing association that ran Grenfall tower. This predates the renovation but there certainly complaints that go back years. Whether this is during her period I don't know. This could be a problem though.

I know that our local council has lots of councillors who have paid roles on housing association bodies - now privatised. Our local councillor isn't but he is very aware of it and thinks it's a massive conflict of interest. Personally I think he should create a stink about it, but he's of the mindset that he couldn't get anything else through council if he did as he's in the minority and most decision are already made at party meetings behind closed doors rather than at council so he has no say. He can't go to the local press as they are heavily pro-council.

This is also why local people regard local government as more or less corrupt.

It's hard to argue with it. The conflict of interest is dreadful. Too many councillors lining pockets from housing associations whilst also supposed to be representing the interests of tenants who voted for them.

In the case of Emma Dent Coad I have no idea if she was paid for being on the board. I have no idea if she was there at the time residents had made complaints. I have no idea if she stuck up for residents.

My point is more that it opens up some difficult questions that I know should be looked at in my area but people who are aware of it feel powerless to expose it. This conflict is not restricted to the Tories nor my area alone. I know a nearby constituency where I used to work had similar arrangements.

I hope this area gets looked at too. It needs to be. It's widespread.

Journalists if you are reading this thread look into this. It's a HUGE story begging to be scrapped out the gutter.

I'm really hoping that inflation means people start to wake up to what Brexit will actually do to this country.

It will when coupled with interest rate increases. Even I was surprised at the BoE voting yesterday.

But as usual this will only harshly affect the "plebs". Those who have debt (inc mortgage debt) and for whom day-to-day living costs represent a significant part of their income.

YouGov BEFORE Grenfell (after GE)

https://yougov.co.uk/news/2017/06/15/theresa-may-now-almost-unpopular-pre-campaign-corb/

April net favourability rating:
May +10%
Corbyn -42%

11-12 June: (and what is it now ?)
May -35%
Corbyn 0%
CON -21
LAB +6

Clearly Tories that downrate Corbyn, as Labour voters rating of him has increased from 40 to 75%
and LiDems rating of him from 15 to 69%

YouGov Times Poll

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/theresa-mays-deal-with-the-dup-is-opposed-by-half-of-voters-k6r9plqfm?CMP=TNLEmail1189188_1964285

DUP:
Only 8% have a favourable opinion of DUP
42% unfavourable

Only 27 % say the Tories should do a deal with DUP
44 % say it would be worse than the Conservatives going it alone.
No deal is better than a bad deal Grin

only 41 % of people want May to stay on as PM, including only three quarters of those who voted for her a week ago.
Overall, 44 % of people think May should quit now.

Boris is clear favourite to take over
Far ahead of Ruth, Rudd, Davies

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2017 09:40

But Is it really not possible to make council housing an asset? Design-led. Ergonomic. Something to be proud of? Or would that ALSO invoke a sense of envy/resentment?

I believe it's possible. If the political will is there. It's not just about finances.

Times again

"The Queen's Speech has been shunted from Monday to Wednesday, which means it will be a less grand affair:
Her Majesty will arrive by car not gold coach, read out whatever it is the Tories have managed to cobble together, before rushing off to catch the latest race at Ascot.

It prompted Tim Loughton, a former Tory minister" to Tweet of the day

State Opening in Royal Ascot week-having pi@@ed off most pensioners with our manifesto,
PM determined to include our most pre-eminent one too GrinGrin
@timloughton

citroenpresse · 16/06/2017 09:45

Really extraordinary the number of people who have been involved in recent events are exactly those who were most involved. Security on the cheap - Government generally; fire closures Boris, housing minister - lost his seat but now TM chief of staff, and now Re Emma Dent Coad.

Property and undue influence has a loooong history in London. Dame Shirley Porter and her 'building stable communities' etc. Fined millions.

Sostenueto · 16/06/2017 09:52

Hi citreon XXX yes thread moves fast. Watching wright stuff who have already agreed Grenfell being politicised. We MUST keep focus on cause and effect of fire. There is definitely a case for corporate manslaughter here. Every single agency involved in any way with Grenfell should be found to blame for something that did not need to happen. The cowboy builders should definitely be shut down now.

Council housing has always carried a stigma. Here in my town the stigma is great. It is not helped by these areas being run down, the schools being on special measures and a definite deficiency on the part if the Tory council in not making concerted efforts for regeneration..
Unless funding to council estates is increased to improve the sock improve community services etc these areas will always be stigmatised.

missmoon · 16/06/2017 09:54

"In the case of Emma Dent Coad I have no idea if she was paid for being on the board. I have no idea if she was there at the time residents had made complaints. I have no idea if she stuck up for residents. "

This may explain her relative silence so far, I was wondering why she hasn't more involved (e.g., helping to coordinate, meeting residents with JC, etc.).

Sostenueto · 16/06/2017 09:55

Stock.

Peregrina · 16/06/2017 09:55

I thought they had already planned to make the Opening of Parliament a more low key event, before the election results? I suspect it's due to the Queen and D of E's advancing years.

RedToothBrush · 16/06/2017 09:57

The ukip vote is driven in part by the type of conflicts of interest at local level. People still know stuff.

The little I know of local government I know it's riddled and rotten in places.

The decline of the local press has been a huge driver in allowing people to get away with it.

But yeah. The EU.

Sorry personal bug but an important one.

Sorry, I may have been too harsh on Emma Dent Coad. She says she wasn't paid to sit on the board: twitter.com/emmadentcoad/status/875109724555030529

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 16/06/2017 10:01

I'm quite interested on the impact on working class Tory voters. Some of whom will be in social housing.

Just as UKIP galvanised them I wonder if they Will hold their nose and vote Labour?

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 10:09

Express headline today: Did EU regulation mean deadly cladding was used on Grenfell Tower?

Answer to Grenfell Tower = Brexit

Johnson. What a card! Read the article to be reminded about the Welsh 'translation' of an English road sign, if you don't remember it. Maybe Redwood did the translation? It sounds about right for his knowledge of Welsh.
