What are people's thoughts so far?

From where I'm standing it's a fucking shambles. So far TM has tried

  • threatening to turn the UK into a tax haven

then

  • threatening to walk away with no deal if necessary

Then

  • withdrawing security co-operation

Now

  • Telling the country we 'must unite' for apparently no other reason than she's told us to

As far as I can see this has all gone down like a cup of cold sick.

The EU have, quite rightly IMO, said 'piss off we're going to look after ourselves first even if it costs us in the short term'.

So who thinks things are going well so far?

"A third" should of course read "another". Can't type, and technology doesn't always help.

Cailleach1 · 17/04/2017 21:00

Actually, there is probably no need to worry. David Davis has said they have contingency plans for all the possible eventualities.

Dannythechampion · 17/04/2017 21:01

That's alright then :)

Bearbehind · 17/04/2017 21:04

David Davis has said they have contingency plans for all the possible eventualities.

Unfortunately it became very apparent he's looked into nothing further than his next meal so his contingency planning is somewhat limited.

And now Mayhem is accusing everybody else of causing instability and putting jobs at risk. How can she keep a straight face?

We are making plans to leave the UK as soon as possible. I wish we could do it sooner. I'm disgusted with it all.

Yep. I don't know how she dares.

Standard BeLeaver discourse, no?

Fair point Elements. It's like living in a Kafka novel.

An eventful few days!

I wish there was more of a choice in the GE.

Pretty much everyone knows Corbyn is useless and, barring a major miracle Labour are screwed.

I'd vote Labour wth anyone else at the helm but I just cannot and will not vote for him.

It'll be interesting to see if TM does participate in the live TV debates.

If she doesn't she'd be showing her true colours- surely that has to make people think twice.

She's planning not to. I wonder if she will be persuaded to change her mind.

Still I think this GE will see Corbyn off. Who they get to replace him could be interesting. Depending on what sort of majority May manages to get, she might rue the day she called the GE and got rid of Corbyn.

Danny we could retain the EMA regulator employees for a UK version - the EU would the need to take time to set up their own regulators. There is no evidence the employees will want to move, most people don't.

You don't know anything about EMA employees, do you? And yet this information could be learned in about 5 minutes, by bothering to look it up.

As EU civil servants, most EMA employees are on fixed term contracts (of less 5 years; mostly under 2 years) and the vast majority are from other EU countries. Fewer than 10% are UK citizens: www.ema.europa.eu/docs/en_GB/document_library/Other/2014/08/WC500170475.pdf

This doesn't tell us that they whether they would prefer to stay in the UK or not (though many may not qualify to do so after brexit). But what we can say is that all of these people are skilled and mobile, almost all of them have portable language skills, and many of them would not qualify for PR in the UK (because of the short term nature of EMA civil servant contracts).

The UK will need to set up it's own regulator, but it is unlikely to be doing so with a ready-made workforce.

TheElementsSong · 20/04/2017 10:42

people are skilled and mobile

Also something to bear in mind with regard to skilled and mobile British citizens in general - having been variously hectored for being elite, expert, metropolitan, liberal, traitors, citizens of nowhere, etc - these people too will be thinking very carefully about their future.

If I wasn't already abroad I'd be looking for my escape route, as would my OH, who works in the clinical trials field.

I'm just amazed that we have ended up in this car crash. What a mess. Even taking into account the 2008 crash, it's still an almighty political fuckup. One of those 'end of era' periods that future children will write their essays on ...Britain - 1979 to 2016 - 'the Age of Market'.

Dannythechampion · 22/04/2017 11:57

Thanks Misti, Carol repeatedly posts on things she has no idea about, or attempts to use facts partially to prove her point.

Its a car crash, an a seismic event.

A Level History Questions in 2045 will be on this period.
