THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD TEN

-----------------

This set of threads started out asking if Boris had been outmanoeuvred by Cameron handing him a poison chalice. Fate made it seem as if Boris lost the battle but May has confounded everyone and handed him a second chance. Or so it might seem.

May now has a new Cabinet after a sweeping cull of Cameron's lot. It is more right wing than in a generation. A number of appointments have raised eyebrows. There are plenty of poison chalices and plenty of Brexiteers. Will this create peace in the Tory ranks? Or is it just the calm before the storm

Labour are tearing themselves apart what now seems to be all out civil war. Talk of gerrymandering, violence, disenfranchisement, deselection and intimidation are rife. The seems to be no end in sight, and no prospect of a solution apparent. The question perhaps seems to be when and how, rather than if the party will split, and who will retain the name and party funds.

-----------------

So the sad face of British politics in the last two days can be summed up in a single image. Boris and a brick.

Depressed?

I think we have a while to go yet before we hit the bottom.

Excuse me with the intros as I'm starting to struggle to keep up with things myself

A Turkish coup is horrible for those in Turkey, but not going to affect the UK
< another vote for sending Boris to sort them out >
If UKIP start blocking bridges, then it's time to stock up on loo paper and torch batteries.

It's secular and anti Erdogan. He's been a real pain in everybody'd arse.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 15/07/2016 21:28

It will be worse if they don't succeed.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/07/2016 21:31

Another death threat being investigated by police.
This time to a man working for Portland Communications, regarded as "Blairist"

Are Momentum all hetero, since rape threats are only against women opponents ?

Thank you Red for these threads. As a Remainer they have steered me through.

It should be a given for the FS, but at least BJ made an appropriate response to Nice. I was shocked the appointment and can only hope he can keep more to this tone.

I hope I'm proved wrong about BJ. Even though Brexit and trade are gone and that No. 10 deal with the serious foreign policy. there is still the day to day work about places like Syria and co-ordination with the Ministry of Defence. the FO deals with things in the hope it doesn't get to No 10.

SingaSong12 · 15/07/2016 21:44

BigChoc Apart from the suffering and violence for the people in Turkey my worry is that instability in Turkey will cause more refugees to want to come to the EU. At the moment there is an agreement of sorts stop I g the boats. I think we should be accepting our share and there should be legal routes to EI incl. the U.K. but right now the currebt refugees and possibly refugees from the new conflict will be opened to smuggling, exploitation and drowning.

SingaSong12 · 15/07/2016 21:45

stopping not. stop I g EU not EI

RedToothBrush · 15/07/2016 21:48

Civil Servant to May:

"You know how on your first day in office there was a terror attack in France, well this evening you have a coup in Turkey to detail with".

There are govt problems in turkey tonight...

Helmetbymidnight · 15/07/2016 21:49

X-post. Dearie-me.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 15/07/2016 21:50

What a week...

Peregrina · 15/07/2016 21:54

It's frightening. And we arsed around with a Referendum which we didn't need, so causing chaos in our own country.

flippinada · 15/07/2016 21:55

God... can we have a rewind button on 2016 now please?

Helmetbymidnight · 15/07/2016 21:55

Don't get ideas anyone!

flippinada · 15/07/2016 21:57

I mean we don't have to have one for the whole year, even just for the last month....?

Perhaps off the point at this particular moment but our FPTP system is responsible for the sorry state we're in now. Having effectively disenfranchised most of the voting population as a result of this system (I personally have never been represented by anyone who I have voted for), we shouldn't be surprised that so many people see their franchise as a protest vote to give whoever it is "a good kicking" rather than an expression of positive intent. Hence the Referendum result. We need some form of proportional representation sooner rather than later, but of course it won't happen. Too many vested interests and too much ignorance and apathy.

The only way I could see PR happening, would be if there was a cross party movement for it, including moderate Tories.

True - and our last and best opportunity during the Coalition failed due to Tory opposition and voter apathy...I despair.

prettybird · 15/07/2016 22:26

We didn't have a referendum on PR - we had a referendum on AV, which isn't the same Sad

Under the d'Hondt system, which has its flaws - not least of which is that trying to second guess it can bite you on the bum - UKIP still failed to get a single seat in the Scottish Parliament.

However, unfortunate in England, I think there are enough people who would vote for them to get seats. But maybe if they get a few seats, then parties would stop pandering to them unnecessarily for fear of not getting their "own" votes.

It might have stopped Cameron putting the referendum into his manifesto. Hmm
