THE BREXIT FALLOUT OUT CONTINUES - THREAD EIGHT!

--------------------

Each of the parties seem to have a taken a very different style to their leadership contests.

The Tory party have been well documented as doing in the classic style of Hamlet. After the entire Conservative Party have spent two weeks stabbing each in the back and front, May steps forward to take the crown for herself.

But what about the others?

The UKIP leadership contest seems to be in comedy style of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. In a strange turn of events, that no one predicted and seem quite absurd, they seem to be changing their rules so their new leader must have been a member for 5 years. The punchline is this rules just about everyone out, apart from Neil Hamilton and Steven Woolfe. As BigChocFrenzy points out, we are expecting Arron Banks to hand out the brown envelopes. We are just waiting for the poorly thought out, and badly booked racist band to turn up and make everyone cringe in horror and distract everyone from UKIP's candidates and their manifestos in the process.

Meanwhile Labour Party decide to do what they thought was Star Wars Panto. After spending a week going “She’s Standing”, “Oh No She’s Not” Angela Eagle is declared the Empire Strikes Back candidate by Diane Abbot. Well if she’s the rebel leader, then who is Darth Vader and the Emperor?

Unfortunately, you’d be forgiven for thinking the performance is starting to look more and more like a re-enactment of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, by the minute:

A battle of wills between two forces locked together in a room with ultimately different and opposing self-interests. This is only resolved when the new leader to the dynamic who sought to upset the institution, and give the others their freedom, is lobotomised and subsequently killed in an act of mercy. His murderer manages to escape the prison to the cheers of those still stuck inside.

The Greens of course are a foreign language film, no one has heard of and no one is really that interested in watching.

The Lib Dems are merely sat in the audience. With Tim Farron heckling.

But where is Gandalf? Sad

--------------------

At least some sanity has returned and we now have some leaders. May can now get stuck into the job of handing the nightmare that is Brexit whilst making herself at home at Number 10. Rumours are circulating that it’s been left a bit of a pigsty.

We will follow May, on her new adventures to foreign lands to persuade Merkel and Juncker to hand over a mythical unicorn to the UK. Meanwhile will we continue our own hunt for the opposition, whilst we all consult our dictionaries for the meaning of the word ‘Brexit’ in bafflement in the wake of ‘Brexit means Brexit’.

--------------------

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

"It's horrific," says one NEC member of the meeting.

flippinada · 12/07/2016 18:44

MrsLupo have you read that one of the reasons for the secret ballot is because two female members of the NEC were concerned about intimidation? Considering recent events it's a very valid concern, wouldn't you say?

The trolling against AE, whatever you think about her politics, has been foul. I said yesterday (I think) that whatever happens she will be crucified and it looks like that's exactly what is happening.

I'm far angrier about the initimidation and aggression shown to female MPs, in the Labour Party of all places (not that it should be happening anywhere) than I am about a secret ballot.

TheNorthRemembers · 12/07/2016 18:44

Red That article made me cry again. Too close to home. English unis are already being discriminated against, because of the uncertainties. I cannot believe our whole life's work is being ruined.

JC should ideally piss off, but I do not mind him being on the ballot. As labour is so deeply infiltrated now, maybe a fresh start would be better for more centrist people.

MrsLupo Momentum people can be very intimidating in my experience. And I am not an MP, or anyone important.

TheBathroomSink · 12/07/2016 18:44

4 crates of sandwiches have just been delivered, apparently.

We've had raffle committees longer than this.

Showmethewaytogohome · 12/07/2016 18:44

This is in direct relationship to standing against Corbyn. There is no excuse. She has a right to do so. I have seen what it is like first hand. Sometimes you have to see to believe. There are MP's who can not cope with the amount of abuse that is being thrown at them. It is vile. And it is all about JC. Not the NHS. Not Trident. Not Education. Not about our country. Or the sh#t we are in. Just about JC

Policies I can understand. One man - No. No way

TheNorthRemembers · 12/07/2016 18:46

So what is wrong with a secret ballot? I honestly do not know. Of course, if you want people to freely follow their instincts, it is a secret ballot. Noone wants to vote with their boss / parent / neighbours watching and judging them.

GingerIvy · 12/07/2016 18:46

I can understand her constituency being angry and deselecting her. However, violence (no matter who the source) must be condemned by JC and other MPs.

TheBathroomSink · 12/07/2016 18:48

oh my. Someone on conservativehome suggest BoJo for party chair, and the negotiating team to be Daniel Hannan and Gisella Stuart.

Local Labour Party in Manchester suspended
Posted at
18:41
The Labour Party has suspended the entire constituency party in Gorton, Manchester, following allegations of infighting, bullying and voting irregularities.

Greater Manchester Police has also been called in to investigate after complaints from some party members.

The seat is currently held by veteran Labour MP Sir Gerald Kaufman.

It's understood the allegations centre around the manoeuvring of differing factions within the party in advance of 86-year-old Sir Gerald's expected decision not to stand at the next election.

A letter from Labour's headquarters to the CLP says a number of allegations have been brought to the attention of the national officers of the party.

These allegations relate to the conduct of Labour Party members both during and outside of Labour Party meetings. They also relate to conduct of members of the CLP executive committee in administering internal ballots. Nearly all of the complaints received include concerns about the safety of members at future meetings - particularly the CLP AGM. All parties in this dispute agree that the safety of members is paramount and it is our understanding that conversations have taken place between the CLP and Greater Manchester Police."

TheNorthRemembers I have plenty of friends in similar positions. Its utterly dreadful.

Its starting to sound like actual not metaphorical civil war in the Labour Party.

Ginger and so it continues. At least now people will start to believe us. I despair. As i have said it is orchestrated, they are pinpointing specific areas (I won't tell you why mine was as it will out me) and parachuting/intimidating

This is not the real Labour party

flippinada · 12/07/2016 18:53

God. Just what the hell is happening in the Labour Party? This is awful.

EatsShitAndLeaves · 12/07/2016 18:54

Mrs Lupo - if you are the figurehead for a group of activists that are (and this indisputable) responsible for online and in person bullying/intimidation/anti Semitic and malicious behaviour then I think that when your response to that is a couple of half arsed online statements it's pretty reasonable for people to question your values and willingness to reign in that behaviour.

The irony of the cry of "democracy" is not lost on me when used to vindicate Corbyn yet we see reports from local CLP's of long standing members being shouted down, unable to get their point across and labelled as Blairite Scum.

It's part of a democratic process that a party leader should have the support of BOTH the MP's and the membership.

Having one without the other does not confer any moral superiority or give an effective mandate.

MrsLupo · 12/07/2016 18:56

This is NOT about 'poor Corbyn'. I would say the same for anyone. It's about due process. You can't have rules about how decisions are arrived at and then just bend them when it suits you - or you can, but you can't expect to be respected for it. Even the decision to hold the meeting on a day's notice smacks of stitch-up. Given the massive controversy surrounding Corbyn's leadership, it was vital that the NEC conduct themselves with total probity and transparency, and they have utterly failed to do that. Not only will the outcome of this satisfy no one, on either 'side', but the party now also has a massive credibility gap in terms of calling for a general election on the basis that Theresa May lacks a popular mandate. You can't expect democratic process from others if you can't manage to stick to it yourself.

Yes, I am aware of the alleged concerns about threats driving the request for a secret ballot. They were happy enough to discuss which way they were intending to vote with the press though.

Yes, I am aware of the vile trolling. It makes no difference to how the NEC should conduct themselves.

And yes, Corbyn has condemned threats and violence.

TheBathroomSink · 12/07/2016 18:59

The Gorton thing doesn't seem to be related to the current leadership issue, it looks like it is a struggle for power among local interests as Kaufman is probably going to retire. It isn't the first time the local party has been suspended, either.

Floisme · 12/07/2016 19:00

I may not always agree with MrsL but I think questioning her values is pretty low.

MrsLupo · 12/07/2016 19:04

I think EatsShit meant Corbyn, not me. But thank you.

I'm not quite sure what people want Corbyn to do though. Say it again? Say it louder? Take out the insurgents with a flamethrower? Confused

Showmethewaytogohome · 12/07/2016 19:04

But they are following the process - it wasn't clear in itself. The trolling and threats are indefensible. I speak as someone who heard a Pro corbyite threaten to punch someone who told him to stop heckling someone at a meeting. The feeling of poison has invaded the p[arty. People at all levels are scared. FGS my DH is scared we will have our own windows put in - and that was before today.

It is an atmosphere of fear - you can not put that in a box and deny it is happening. How the freak is that democracy?
