THE BREXIT FALLOUT OUT CONTINUES - THREAD EIGHT!

--------------------

Each of the parties seem to have a taken a very different style to their leadership contests.

The Tory party have been well documented as doing in the classic style of Hamlet. After the entire Conservative Party have spent two weeks stabbing each in the back and front, May steps forward to take the crown for herself.

But what about the others?

The UKIP leadership contest seems to be in comedy style of Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. In a strange turn of events, that no one predicted and seem quite absurd, they seem to be changing their rules so their new leader must have been a member for 5 years. The punchline is this rules just about everyone out, apart from Neil Hamilton and Steven Woolfe. As BigChocFrenzy points out, we are expecting Arron Banks to hand out the brown envelopes. We are just waiting for the poorly thought out, and badly booked racist band to turn up and make everyone cringe in horror and distract everyone from UKIP's candidates and their manifestos in the process.

Meanwhile Labour Party decide to do what they thought was Star Wars Panto. After spending a week going “She’s Standing”, “Oh No She’s Not” Angela Eagle is declared the Empire Strikes Back candidate by Diane Abbot. Well if she’s the rebel leader, then who is Darth Vader and the Emperor?

Unfortunately, you’d be forgiven for thinking the performance is starting to look more and more like a re-enactment of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, by the minute:

A battle of wills between two forces locked together in a room with ultimately different and opposing self-interests. This is only resolved when the new leader to the dynamic who sought to upset the institution, and give the others their freedom, is lobotomised and subsequently killed in an act of mercy. His murderer manages to escape the prison to the cheers of those still stuck inside.

The Greens of course are a foreign language film, no one has heard of and no one is really that interested in watching.

The Lib Dems are merely sat in the audience. With Tim Farron heckling.

But where is Gandalf? Sad

--------------------

At least some sanity has returned and we now have some leaders. May can now get stuck into the job of handing the nightmare that is Brexit whilst making herself at home at Number 10. Rumours are circulating that it’s been left a bit of a pigsty.

We will follow May, on her new adventures to foreign lands to persuade Merkel and Juncker to hand over a mythical unicorn to the UK. Meanwhile will we continue our own hunt for the opposition, whilst we all consult our dictionaries for the meaning of the word ‘Brexit’ in bafflement in the wake of ‘Brexit means Brexit’.

--------------------

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

These threads are amazing.

So much knowledge. So much balanced, reasoned discussion. Such a lack of sycophancy / agreeing with everyone else / bullying / bunfighting between people with different viewpoints.

Thanks Red!

But where is Gandalf?

He's on the UnicornQuest.

Or possibly playing Pokemon Go.

Could go either way.

In non-news, one of DC's sidekicks told Sky News most of the Cabinet will keep their jobs but might be moved around a bit. Won't be as dramatic as if BJ/MG/AL had got in, for which of course we all sign in relief. Something I read which I now can't find again suggested TL might not give Chancellor to Hammond because he's loaded and it might not look good. Who she picks for her top team is going to be very interesting.

I don't actually care who has what amount of money, as long as they do a decent job of the position they're assigned to. Honestly, they ALL have money, for the most part, do they not?

Some of my medical friends are circulating this joke:

Question 9 of the Abbreviated Mental Test score. "Who is the current Prime Minister? Any fucking idea?"

Yes, but Hammond is supposed to be worth getting on for £10m. He also consulted for some fairly eye-opening people pre-politics, including Latin American governments (for the World Bank) and the government of Malawi. He's even more low-key than TM so doesn't get much attention.

Talking of Gandalf, the current situation reminds me a bit of the beginning of LotR where Frodo says he wishes all this stuff wasn't happening in his times, and Gandalf replies something like "so do all who live in such times"...

I realise the changes are thick and fast politically lately, but what's coming up this week that we should be watching for?

I'm aware of PMQs with Cameron tomorrow, then TM taking over by evening. Should we be expecting some announcements about cabinet this week? What other known things are coming up? Is there anything actually on schedule for Labour?

Greens, SNP, UKIP, and LD are apparently all holed up somewhere else. Confused

NEC meeting for Labour today - decision on whether JC is on the ballot paper automatically

Hopefully some more contenders for the crown will pop up

Possibly legal action re ballot and or ownership of the 'labour party' at some stage in near future

Oh and a competition to name the new party/parties...prize is an all expenses trip to the hell out of here Grin

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/12/david-camerons-worst-lie-is-finally-revealed-larry-the-cat/

"While the rest of the Cameron retinue is clearing out this week, Larry is staying on with Theresa May. Which raises all sorts of questions, but first: what sort of man moves house and leaves his cat behind?

The answer: a man who doesn't like cats and never really owned the cat in question. "

Well, he did leave his child behind on one occasion, did he not? Grin

I can't see the NEC having the balls to say Corbyn can't be on the ballot. However it does look as if it will be closer than I would have thought - especially if reports are true that CorbyFans tried to kick Jon Ashworth off the NEC - it would indicate they think the vote is tight.

However, as time goes on I think it matters less as the membership support "seems" to be moving away from him.

Yes he has a hard core of supporters - but I think a lot of members don't want to see the party torn apart and would vote for a viable alternate.

The issue for me is I don't think Eagle is that and I can see anyone stepping up to the plate that is.....still a day is a long time in politics as we have all seen.

Labour Party for the people of Hackney.

John Lewis (lots of brand loyalty - could do a deal?)

that article is damning, GingerIvy

Anyone who has spoken privately to Mr Cameron about Larry could sense the lack of affection: he refers to Larry as "it", not "he", for instance.

Our soon to be ex-premier is a dog person, a chocolate Labrador of a man: solidly and reliably posh, keen to please and unable to resist leaping into any body of water that he passes. (He'll swim a lot in retirement.)

How did this man ever win 2 elections when he's so clearly an untrustworthy cat hater?

Report
Showmethewaytogohome · 12/07/2016 14:53

Eat I agree Eagle is not the answer. However I fear that the mobilisation of momentum could keep JC in.

Also I am of a suspicious nature but I hardly get any mails for the Labour party......but momentum is VERY organised. JC effectively currently controls both structures of communication - the party and momentum

Report
Chalalala · 12/07/2016 14:56

I think JC may win the membership vote, however his mandate may be significantly diminished. And that would damage him. Possibly enough that his position would become untenable?..

(feeling optimistic today!!)

Also, I vote for Labr Grin
