Teresa May or Andrea Leadsom?

So without starting anything too politically fraught I wonder if people would share with me who they prefer for conservative leadership out of the two.

The race is now down to them and so we will have a female PM again!

Opinions?

She's dropped out Shock

BeMorePanda · 11/07/2016 12:15

I didn't read the whole Times article (I'm not a subscriber) but apparently AL also stated therein "I'm not a feminist as I'm not anti-men".

Shock

It just gets worse!

HelpfulChap · 11/07/2016 12:17

1922 committee to make a statement at 12.30pm. Might clear the picture up.

A4Document · 11/07/2016 12:17

"But neither Leadsome nor TM have ever done anything for women, as far as I'm aware?"

Theresa May slaps down 'feminist bigots' MP Raab

This article from 2011 is interesting. Theresa May, who was both Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equality at the time, rebuked Dominic Raab MP who had accused feminists of "obnoxious bigotry". Mrs May also said Mr Raab was fuelling "gender warfare".

He raised the subject of maternity leave. May agreed that flexible parental leave would "give families the choice to decide which parent wishes to stay at home to look after the child in the early stages, beyond a period which will be restricted for the mother only", and said "in future the employer will not know whether it's the male or the female who is in front of him for employment who will be taking time off to look after a baby".

May told MPs "I think that's an important step in dealing with discrimination".

"We should be trying to get away from gender warfare and the politics of difference - but I might suggest to him labelling feminists as obnoxious bigots is not the way forward to do that."

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2016 12:17

But can they now default to May? I thought there had to be an election.

Has the 1922 committee said anything?

AyeAmarok · 11/07/2016 12:17

Well in a way I'm glad because her winning would have been a disaster.

But I've lost a lot of respect for her, bailing when the going gets tough. She really needs to woman up.

AyeAmarok · 11/07/2016 12:19

Interesting A4, that's for that.

MangoMoon · 11/07/2016 12:19

Good, I'm pleased.

Theresa May has the backing of the other Tory MPs so infighting & backstabbing should (hopefully!) be avoided for the next couple of years during Brexit.

Andrea Leadsom would make an excellent children & families minister; I'd like to see Sajid Javid as chancellor too.

Just need Labour to get its house in order now, so that they can be an effective opposition & press ahead for the future.

redshoeblueshoe · 11/07/2016 12:20

Bert Graham Brady to speak in 10 - 15 minutes

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 11/07/2016 12:23

But I've lost a lot of respect for her, bailing when the going gets tough.

Maybe this last week just proved to her that she wasn't really suitable.

hollyisalovelyname · 11/07/2016 12:24

I bet Michael Gove feels a bit silly now.

CrystalMcPistol · 11/07/2016 12:28

She enjoyed the idea of playing at being PM. Oh what a lark it will be such fun! But then shit gets real and Leadsom realises she isn't qualified enough, savvy enough, or bright enough for the gig. How she, and her supporters, didn't realise this at the start is beyond me!

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2016 12:39

Right. So who from the Leave campaign is going to be part of implementing Brexit? Who's left?

MangoMoon · 11/07/2016 12:40

Am just watching Chuka Umunna on the Daily Politics show.

Why is he not going for Labour leadership? I think he comes across really well.
Is there a reason he isn't or won't?

DetestableHerytike · 11/07/2016 12:42

He withdrew last year, didn't he?

CrystalMcPistol · 11/07/2016 12:42

Umunna pulled out of the last leadership contest pretty early on which made me think someone had dirt on him? That might just be my conspiracy theory mind at work though.

Peregrina · 11/07/2016 12:42

Maybe Leasdom thought that Gove would get the second place, so she would have been able to withdraw gracefully. Instead of withdrawing looking a complete fool.

Chippednailvarnishing · 11/07/2016 12:45

I sometimes wonder if Chuka has a skeleton in a closet, as he blamed the press last time he withdrew from the leadership race...

DetestableHerytike · 11/07/2016 12:46

Yup, after 3 days

If he does have a skeleton it must be a pretty massive one!

LurkingHusband · 11/07/2016 13:34

There was an "Anybody but Heseltine" movement in 1990 which skewed the results when seen 26 years later.

Heseltine was popular with the grass roots party members, and very unpopular with MPs. However in those days, the grass roots members didn't get a vote in the leader.

Does anyone recall the famous Major toothache ?

The whole thing was dramatised ....

A4, interesting comments from May on maternity leave. Hope she sticks by her words if she becomes PM. Someone should remind her of those comments, make a campaign for her to deliver on those comments.
