Teresa May or Andrea Leadsom?

So without starting anything too politically fraught I wonder if people would share with me who they prefer for conservative leadership out of the two.

The race is now down to them and so we will have a female PM again!

Opinions?

She don't need media training to avoid faux pas, just some decency will do.

RedToothBrush · 09/07/2016 08:40

I think it also brings into question her naivety about other political issues though. She's saying she can get X deal without compromising Y. The trouble is, if she's walked into a situation like that thinking she's said nothing wrong then what is there to stop her from walking into the negotiating room, agreeing on something that she thinks is fab and then walking away only to realise she's been caught out.

Honestly I think it shows a massive lack of awareness and a naïve trust. It is a potentially 'good' quality to have. But in this situation? No. You need someone who is more cynical and less trusting of others intentions and is fully aware of it when its happening.

Jeremysfavouriteaunt · 09/07/2016 08:40

Oh give over Bertrand I avoid school threads because of this. I have a dd there, all her friends go there and we live about half a mile away. So yes, it's a local school.

BertrandRussell · 09/07/2016 08:42

And I'm not convinced it was a faux pas anyway. It's an appeal straight to the Tory heartland- the membership she is appealing to is overwhelmingly Home Counties middle aged middle/lower middle class. She needs them to get the leadership and marriage and children will get them. She can work on the voters later.

Riverwalk10 · 09/07/2016 08:44

Theresa May, on the other hand, has not made a faux pas - but she has revealed that she believes Sharia law "benefits many British people." No sweetheart, a Sharia consultation is a done deal for the man, always. Sharia is used by older women, those whose command of English is poor, and those who know that they could not see an issue through to its end by using English law.

She either said this crap to be PC, or she means it. Neither explanation works for me.

BertrandRussell · 09/07/2016 08:45

Jeremy- it's not a criticism. Just a statement of fact.

walruswhiskers · 09/07/2016 08:46

Fab tweeted Limerick this morning by Andrew Chapman.

There once was a Tory named Leadsome
Whom sensible liberals found dreadsome.
She hated ms May
And anyone gay
And her CV overstated her cred some.

Jeremysfavouriteaunt · 09/07/2016 08:47

As I said Bertrand, it's a local school, let's not hijack it for other drums to beat. It's boring and I do avoid school threads due to this.

I can't see anything appealing about Leadsom at all. May has not had good relations with the police in the past and made some huge budget cuts which I think has affected morale and effectiveness but is the better candidate for me.

BertrandRussell · 09/07/2016 08:50

Riverwalk- I am not a May supporter but you are misrepresenting her in this May on Sharia Law

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 09/07/2016 08:52

She diesnt need media training to avoid faux pas, just having some decency will do.

ArgyMargy · 09/07/2016 08:54

Surely all schools are local to somewhere?

Riverwalk10 · 09/07/2016 08:54

No, that's not correct Chardonnay. I worked with two men in business who left to become (i) a senior in the LibDem coalition govt and the other (iI) a Tory MEP. When they were still with us, they said that the media training was invaluable because words can inadvertently put you into a cul-de-sac and come across quite different to what you're trying to convey.

Both women are completely off-putting to me, but Leadsom is by far the more loathsome. The whole motherhood thing is totally bizarre and of course no man would ever say anything comparable about fatherhood. Perhaps the most vile comment is about how sad Mrs May must be not to have children.

Jeremysfavouriteaunt · 09/07/2016 09:19

Apparently May supports fox hunting too.

Teresa May or Andrea Leadsom?
Carpaccio · 09/07/2016 09:20

Here's the audio: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36752865

Sounds like she said exactly what she was quoted as saying.

Inkanta · 09/07/2016 09:32

Have listened to the audio and I hear her saying that when you have kids you have a particular concern for the future - for your kids, and that her kids have a big influence on her perspective for the future. I think there is some (non controversial truth) in what she says there. Your own kids do influence you a lot and make you worry for the future. Why can't she say that.

I didn't hear that it was a swipe at TM

Glad that empathy bypass worked- it can be a tricky operation........

Inkanta · 09/07/2016 09:48

Well Bertrand - I don't think there is anything wrong with my empathy instincts, but I know when it's been manipulated by the press.

A similar attempt was made last week (by the DM) when they gave full head lines story on May's childless issue. They are backing May.

Just bad journalism.

Chippednailvarnishing · 09/07/2016 09:49

I don't really care as I think they are both a grim choice.

TheElementsSong · 09/07/2016 09:51

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2016/07/andrea-leadsom-may-still-benefit-naive-comments-motherhood/

Fits with the narrative being pursued by the Leadsom supporters around here.

MajesticWhine · 09/07/2016 10:07

What this episode shows is that Leadsome has not got the tact or self control to deal with being PM, even if she did not mean those loathsome comments about children. I fear for what the Tory members will do though. I have already lobbied my mother who claims she will vote for May.

Lico · 09/07/2016 10:10

Not sure about Leadssom.
She supports a Heathrow third runway and fracking. God knows what she thinks about air quality ..
