The Westministenders / Media Baron Hunger Games continues. Who is trying to outmanoeuvre who?

Don't worry we've all lost track.

In the Blue Corner
It started out with Cameron and Osborne trying to win the battle of the Tories, but they got stung in a UK wide vote. Some of us thought it was about the 'EU'. Instead it has turned out it was an internal Tory Bitch fight between some old Oxford and Eton mates, whilst for others a protest vote at being disenfranchised.
Gove and Johnson stabbed Cameron & Osborne in the back to run for Team Leave. Then they won when they didn't expect to. And there was no Plan. Uh Oh. Then it all started to go really wrong.
Cameron quit in disgust. Johnson went all President Churchill, before he also got stabbed by Gove (possibly with the assistance of the dark influence of Osborne).
We now have a Tory Smackdown with the shadowy influence of the Media Barons in the background.

#Team Gove has been doing their best with the knives. This is a mission to stab as many Tory MPs in the back as possible in order to become PM. Sponsored and supported by Murdoch

#Team Leadsom has been selling more unicorns and trying to pretend her CV and tax return are completely transparent. Think positive and the economy will be just fine. She is the homeopathy of politics. Sponsored and supported by Arron Banks, Leave.eu, UKIP and Britain First.

#Team May has been threatening to deport everyone if the EU don't play nice. Sponsored and supported by The Daily Mail's Dacre

In The Purple Corner
Tragically, it appears that not only do UKIP have a Plan A, they also have outwitted everyone by having Plan B. Yes that’s right TWO plans.
Farage has swanned off –sacked—for a life on CBB so they are looking for a new leader.
The potential candidates are all equally loathsome. They include Arron Banks himself, a suspended member of the party and several other people with an uncanny ability to put their foot in their mouths.
If this wasn't horrible enough, Team Leadsom is increasingly starting to look like a UKIP take over bid of the Conservative Party, which might be a neat way of avoiding a leadership battle of their own considering the quality of the candidates on offer.

In short, its a bit like a Bad Dystopian Movie that invokes Godwin, set in 2016 Westminster. Except its real.
In the Red Corner
Meanwhile the WMD has finally gone off in the Labour Camp, as Chilcot has been published. However the Chicken Coup rattles on regardless.

Corbyn is STILL clinging on, putting in a good claim for the Westminster 'Charlie off Casualty' Award. He has however had his Big Moment in the Commons. Which was a bit of a let down really. ...

The Unions have been trying to talk some sense into everyone. Meanwhile everyone else is has given up and are now just praying for a ruddy miracle to end this torture and give the country an opposition party.

Angela Eagle is still outside for the 5th day in a row, going "I will stand. Soon. If he doesn't quit" The BBC now qualify for a discount deal at the local Travel Lodge.

We FINALLY know who the fuck Owen Smith is! He's a Welsh MP and sounds like he's not completely away with the political fairies.

George Galloway appears to be trying to make a late bid to be included on the ballot paper for any leadership election.
Bliar's cried. We didn't. Chilcot took over 2 million words to tell us everything we already knew. As well as the fact that Mi6 like Nicholas Cage a lot.

The Cult of Momentum are still worshiping their Dear Leader by sending death threats to PR companies they suspect of disloyalty. Somehow they still manage not to get the title of the most vile pressure group in the UK.

And I suppose I should ask, when will a50 be triggered....? And by whom?

All these questions and more.

Conor Pope is a journalist for Labour List

MrsLupo · 09/07/2016 15:26

Breaking news on the BBC : Labour's Tom Watson says "no realistic prospect of reaching compromise" with unions on leader Jeremy Corbyn's future

Oh no, does this mean my jolly jaunt to Brighton tomorrow is off? Sad

GingerIvy · 09/07/2016 15:30

She's appealing to those male Tory members that think women use feminism as a tool to abuse or whack them with, basically. You know, those women that won't stay in their place.

TheBathroomSink · 09/07/2016 15:33

Apparently, these talks Labour have been in with the unions all week were never aimed at getting Corbyn to stand down, according to the union.
Len McCluskey has put out a statement which blames everything on Watson here and says:
I made it absolutely clear from the outset of these discussions that Jeremy Corbyn's resignation as the leader was not on the agenda

GingerIvy · 09/07/2016 15:47

But enough about Stepford PM wannabe AL. Check this out.

I think someone posted something about this in one of the earlier threads, but given the Labour party situation is still ongoing, I thought it might be worth flagging up how the German communist party reacted to the rise of Hitler. Interesting article here: socialistreview.org.uk/378/lessons-of-defeat.

Basically, they decided the real enemy was the German socialist party so tried to cleanse the communist party of socialist class traitors, completely ignoring Hitler.

I wonder how much cross over there is between UKIP and Fathers for Justice?

MrsLupo · 09/07/2016 15:54

Thanks for that Bathroom. I am so disappopinted in Tom Watson's role in all this. As deputy leader, he should have been reminding Labour rebels of their options and obligations in terms of the rule book. His only possible defence is that Hilary Benn shot his bolt knowing that Watson was off enjoying silent disco in Glastonbury. But still. I was impressed by his role in exposing the phone hacking scandal, and voted for him for Deputy Leader largely on the strength of that. Never again. He is finished after this for me.

TheBathroomSink · 09/07/2016 16:10

It does somewhat look as if Watson used a little bit of a profile bump to catapult him into a job he really wasn't qualified for. Not that anyone else would dream of doing something like that, would they?

I wonder how much cross over there is between UKIP and Fathers for Justice? I should imagine it's a fair bit.

On the socialist party thing, I just read something: the left looks for traitors, the right looks for converts. This is exactly what is happening.

Floisme · 09/07/2016 16:15

I feel quite sorry for Eagle. She'll be taken apart. And when it's all over, Yvette Cooper - who's keeping a very low profile - will probably step forward and clean up.

GingerIvy · 09/07/2016 16:28

I don't feel sorry for her at all. She's mucked it up completely with all her "I will, I won't, I'll wait, I will..." nonsense.

She's an adult, presumably high enough up in the Labour party to know how it works.

DoinItFine · 09/07/2016 16:34

At least Eagle is doing something to stop an egomaniac denying us our democratic right to an opposition.

I have come to loathe Corbyn.

TheBathroomSink · 09/07/2016 16:35

I agree with Ginger, if Eagle had actually done this the first or even second time she threatened, I think there is a very slight possibility that she might have edged him out, or at least it would have been a close vote. Now, she really doesn't look like she's fit to lead anything.

MrsLupo · 09/07/2016 16:35

I don't feel sorry for Angela Eagle at all either. I agree she will be taken apart (assuming a leadership contest involving her ensues), but I think she must be much more stupid than I gave her credit for if she ever thought it could be otherwise. Her constant vacillation and prevarication have amply demonstrated - if it was previously in doubt - that she is not even remotely leadership material. She must have known that about herself. And even if not, the fact that it is starkly obvious now and yet the Labour rebels are still ostensibly backing her ought to tell her unequivocally that she is being used. If she realises that and is still pursuing this daft course of action anyway, then I'm afraid I think she deserves everything that is coming to her.

What I find most disgusting about this Labour coup is that it was so obviously planned a long time in advance, and rolled out at a moment calculated to do maximum damage. Many of those who resigned from the shadow cabinet were therefore acting as 'sleepers', pretending to be on Corbyn's team but silently waiting for the signal to act against him. If they had something to say then, they should have said it then, imo. By waiting until a critical moment, what they have done most damage to is not Corbyn but to the Labour party itself, and by extension to the country that they claim to be working in the service of. I find it treacherous and think it unforgivable. I'm glad Angela Eagle's own constituency has made it so clear they feel the same.

nauticant · 09/07/2016 16:36

Today has made me realise how fucking smart and on the ball Theresa May was to have done that DM interview. - DoinItFine

If you compare the tactical thinking of that interview with the witlessness of Leadsom's in the Times it doesn't take long to realise who would coordinate the UK's negotiations with the EU better. Apart from being useless, Leadsom would be operated like a puppet by the more able around her (of whom there would be many).

GingerIvy · 09/07/2016 16:38

MrsLupo Yes. This absolutely.

She's [AL] appealing to those male Tory members that think women use feminism as a tool to abuse or whack them with, basically

She's appealing to those who like to paint themselves as victims and one of her main tactics will be to paint herself as a victim whenever she can. It is so low grade I could weep. What's the female term for "an absolute cad and a bounder"?

Floisme · 09/07/2016 16:44

That might be true but Corbyn walked into it by going awol the weekend of the referendum. Compare Nicola Sturgeon - straight out of the trap that Friday morning. A leader needs to be on the ball, especially if he doesn't entirely trust his team.

Muddlingalongalone · 09/07/2016 16:47

Hmmm in terms of AL and the far right - a lovely fb meme that a colleague has just liked via a group called UK immigration of the Mays & the husband's g4s shareholding.

GingerIvy · 09/07/2016 16:47

Most of the leaders went AWOL right after the referendum. NS was the exception, I agree. But it certainly wasn't just JC that disappeared. We were all on here discussing the disappearance of the government leaders.

DoinItFine · 09/07/2016 16:48

Oh god, the thought of Leadsom in negotiations with the finest EU diplomats makes me die a little bit inside.

Anyone want to talk about our lame duck commissioner?

We've sent our French ambassador.

Presumabky to do some pre-Article 50 diplomacy.

What will he have been sent to accomplish?

Any ideas?

Thoughts on this?

Former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev says Nato is escalating the Cold War with Russia 'into a hot one'
Nato 'only talk about defence, but actually are preparing for offensive operations,' Mr Gorbachev says

Floisme · 09/07/2016 16:50

It doesn't matter what the others did. Corbyn's the leader of the opposition; The Prime Minister had just resigned and he was nowhere to be seen. He lost my support that weekend.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 09/07/2016 16:52

The German news channels are caking the new forces to be stationed in the East Angriffskraefte.

It made me very uneasy.
