Why did Boris decide not to run for PM when Michael Gove decided not to endorse his presumed candidacy ?

Maybe he thought if he won that the Gove camp (including DC and GO) would block him at every turn, so preferred to back another candidate, splitting Goves vote and lining himself up for senior position within the Brexit Bargaining Committee. Didn't he comment 'I won't be able to do what I wanted to do' or similar? I am surprised that there has not been so much more vitriol against DC and GO, who were the architects of this situation.

Just a numbers thing - supporters shifted allegiance and he didn't have the necessary support
