" What are the things they should have had in place, prior to the referendum?"

Things like whether they were going to negotiate for an EEA or similar deal or leave the single market altogether and have controlled immigration, with realistic impact projections done of whatever that choice was.

A timeline of things like when article 50 would be triggered, named people/ working groups in place for negotiations.

Obviously some of it would rely on the actual negotiations, but people would then have known - what was actually wanted from leaving the EU and been able to judge whether it had a cat's chance in hell of being agreed to in negotiations and a rough idea of when we would actually leave.

TBH I'm not surprised that Johnson didn't throw in his hat. He knows it's all going to go tits up. His eyes are on a long term prize.

So it seems there isn't going to be an election, and no doubt the press will be silent about this, unlike when Gordon Brown came to power.

claig · 30/06/2016 22:38

BBC Newsnight just saying that Boris had to dine with Dacre earlier this month to try and win the approval of "the Bible of Middle England" (i.e. the Daily Mail) if he was going to be able to win the leadership.

Middle England is for Dacre and the Daily Mail (not Murdoch), because the Daily Mail is on our side against the useless elites.

Lweji · 30/06/2016 22:41

The £350 million to the nhs wasn't a plan then?
Grin

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 22:45

The Daily Mail is a paper that picks on groups that it doesn't like and 'others' them - along with that 'astute' Katie Hopkins. It doesn't give a shit about many groups who have suffered under the Government. It writes awful stuff about minority groups. It targets and tars many groups who it doesn't like. Just like Hopkins.

It is NOT on the side of many people. If you think it's on your side, then what side are you on when it comes to minority groups who the DM has picked on?

claig · 30/06/2016 22:49

The Daily Mail is against the elites and their incompetence, that is all.

BBC Newsnight has a panel of 5 conservative members and only one supports Gove.

It looks like the BBC may try and help the Establishment in their support for the Remain Theresa May against the people, the Daily Mail and Murdoch who are for Gove.

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 22:52

Personally I don't give a shit what the media think and I wish we had a country where the Press - and that is all of the press - did not have so much influence.

The DM is a fucking awful paper that has done a lot of damage to people in this country that are not on their approved list.

Luckily we have social media and the internet so people can get away from the media bias that we have in this country.

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 22:53

gainst the people, the Daily Mail and Murdoch who are for Gove

Aaah - the people again.

Forgetting the rest of the population again, are we?

claig · 30/06/2016 22:56

In this case, by "people", I mean the people who will have a vote for Tory leadership i.e. conservative members. My guess is that they will prefer Gove, as they are probably Middle England Daily Mail types on the whole rather than Establishment Remainers.

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 22:56

The whole thing has been a massive fuck up.

I feel like I'm living in a Shakespearean play coupled with Yes Prime Minister, House of Cards and Game of Thrones.

And we are now playing a massive game of bluff with the EU and seeing who blinks first over negotiations.

Still, as long as we have the Daily fucking Mail, things are ok?

claig · 30/06/2016 23:00

'Still, as long as we have the Daily fucking Mail, things are ok?'

Absolutely. They will never beat Middle England. The elite took the people on and lost. This is the most amazing expression of the people's will in decades. We beat them fair and square and now their media (not Middle England's paper of course) is calling us all the names under the sun.

claig · 30/06/2016 23:07

Oh My God. Dacre has gone for Theresa May, not Gove.

We know Gove is more in with Murdoch than with Dacre, but Dacre backing May is good news for Theresa May.

And just to remind you 48% of 'the people' voted to Remain. But you don't seem to care about that point. Are we important to you or are we 'other'?

You know who you remind me of...

Boris Johnson has pulled out of leadership race
reup · 30/06/2016 23:10

The Mail are backing May according to a front page I saw on Twitter.

I'm still chuckling at the idea of the Mail being anti-establishment rebels.

claig · 30/06/2016 23:15

Earthquake, absolute earthquake, "the Bible of Middle England", more famous and more consulted by those seeking knowledge and enlightenment across the world than the Oracle of Delphi, beloved by Middle England because it is on their side against the useless elites has backed Theresa May over Gove.

Reuters is on the case already, the world catches its breath. Trump, himself, is stunned.

"Daily Mail newspaper back Theresa May to succeed Cameron"

Britain's right-leaning Daily Mail newspaper endorsed Theresa May to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron, an emailed copy of the paper's front page showed on Thursday.

"A party in flames and why it must be Theresa," read a headline on the copy of the front page."

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 23:16

I seriously think no one could have predicted this week's events.

Did Boris get asked during the referendum 'what do you see happening if Leave win?'

And would he have foreseen this?

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 23:21

Well, I hope Leave campaigners get what they want from this episode. Not that there seems to be a universal picture.

On the interesting side, we might have a female PM, a female leader of the opposition and a female First Minister of Scotland - all negotiating with Angela Merkel.

Would make a change

claig · 30/06/2016 23:24

Gove was a neo-con and with Murdoch and that may be what Dacre was not too keen on. Theresa May is not in with Murdoch to the same extent and the Mail probably think she is a safer bet and not neo-con.

It is a shame because Gove is a very talented person who could have done a great job. I would still prefer Gove, but Theresa May is OK too.

It is possible that Gove may not really want it, but Dacre and Gove got Boris out of the way and now Dacre immediately backs May, whom they prefer to Boris.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2016 23:27

And soon a female president of the US ?

Here's a thought. Wouldn't it be better for democracy if editors of national papers weren't so influential in politics and who they supported?

And if their papers weren't as selective in their use of 'facts' and headlines?

sorenofthejnaii · 30/06/2016 23:30

And soon a female president of the US

Let's hope so.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/06/2016 23:32

So its hold the front page - the DM does something not quite as bad as we feared they might?

Sheesh. state-run newspapers are a bad idea, but newspaper-run states may be worse.

claig · 30/06/2016 23:38

'Here's a thought. Wouldn't it be better for democracy if editors of national papers weren't so influential in politics and who they supported?'

No because the Daily Mail is "the Bible of Middle England", it is the only voice that Middle England has, it is the only power that is on our side against the useless metropolitan elites. Jonathan Powell, Blair's forner Chief of Staff, said the Dauly Mail is the paper that all the politicians fear because it speaks for Middle England.

Without the Daily Mail, the metropolita elite would think that Christmas had come early and that they could take the piss even more than they already do.

GlassBrexiteer · 30/06/2016 23:40

Wouldn't it be better for democracy if editors of national papers weren't so influential in politics and who they supported?

it might be better but how can you stop it?
Control of the media gives a person a great deal of power and influence, power tends to corrupt

GlassBrexiteer · 30/06/2016 23:44

but newspaper-run states may be worse
presumably the power of newspapers is somewhat adjusted by the influence of social media...in a way
not that I'm a fan of social media, but it means that there is a two way process
or maybe just a bigger circus
I dunno Confused
