I don't know Bertrand but I really sense that the genie is out the bottle now and whatever happens from now on the racism is here to stay for a while.

Maybe they will spontaneously combust?

Well you could place the blame with 'leave' voters, do nothing but sit there and finger wag and blame on an endless cycle...

Or we can challenge it when we see it. I believe that racists are in the minority so there are more of us than them and they don't have a louder voice.

What did you do about racism before last Thursday?

There is a man I am 'friends' with on Facebook. We went to school together and I have not seen him since. He lives in London in the same place we grew up but we were never friends. He was not the sharpest tool in the box at school and nothing seems to have changed as he seems barely literate.

Anyway, he is already talking of rioting if there is another referendum. I don't think the fact that none of the promises are actually possible has crossed his mind yet.

I too think the genie is out of the bottle and it can't now be put back. I fear for my Asian DH and my mixed race dd. I will never forgive Farage and co for what they have done.

You will notice that I carefully did not "place the blame on leave voters" Too nuanced for you, perhaps?

I don't think anyone said that they were ok with racism before last Thursday Lying.

No one said that all leave voters are racists either. I took Bertrand's post to mean the small percentage of racists who have taken the result as a green light to be hateful.

Brokenbiscuit I have a foreign husband and mixed DCs too. I really hope that you don't notice any difference. If it is any comfort I have spent time in really small villages who don't like outsiders at all wearing a headscarf and everyone has been fine. Sometimes people have a weird disconnect between writing stuff on Facebook and how they treat people they know. I have friends who are Front National supporters but on a personal level we still get on really well. I hope that you and your family will be just fine.

Not nuanced at all. Why do people think their posts are 'nuanced' when they're nothing but. Nearly every Remain voter has decried the Leave voters either as racist themselves or having selfishly opened the floodgates for racists to feel they have a voice now. What did I miss?

Ok then, you could sit around, typing on the internet and do nothing else to combat racism... or challenge it. Or whatever you like. Clear enough for you?

alteredimages, I don't think they were ok with it before Thursday either, but what did people do about it before last Thursday? Surely we tackled it then and we'll do that now?

Well, one of the things about being a grown up is that we accept the unintended consequences of our actions.

And one of the unintended consequences of the leave vote is an increase in overt racist attacks. And it is unlikely that the people carrying out the attacks are going to take the news that nothing will change for at least two years well. So we have to be prepared to deal with it.

We did and we will, but how do you deal with a general sense of not being wanted? That is damaging in and of itself and people reporting incidents to police to be told that it is just anti social behaviour and not a hate crime makes it worse.

Even if you report incidents, you still have to live in the community where you are not welcome.
