To consider lifestyle changes following the referendum?

My DH and I have had a long discussion this morning. We voted remain and are quite nervous about the current political instability that the vote has triggered and the potential consequences of this. We have decided we'll;

  1. Take our house off the market and stay where we are.

  1. Stop any unnecessary spending (visits to coffee shops, meals out, luxury items), in part, because we don't want to help the UK economy when we don't agree with the Political climate, but also, to save more for DC's future. We just don't know what they'll have to face in 10/20 years.

I suspect we are BU. Are you making any changes?

Really enjoy enjoying yourselves, eh? Grin

Life goes on does it not? There's not much the average person can do now, other than just getting on with things. Most people are not going to see any dramatic changes today or tomorrow. It is sensible to have savings for a rainy day, but living like you're at the dawn of an apocalypse is ridiculous.

I haven't changed my position of course, but am trying not to provoke further verbal abuse from Lyn. That many expletives in one short paragraph does not indicate emotional stability.

I'll bob off now and enjoy an abuse free Sunday afternoon.

OP - the reason Lynne is pissed off, is the things you talk about are a dream for many. People would love to put a house on the market and go for a coffee, but the reality is, many people do not own their own houses and cannot just pop out for a coffee. Do you realise there are foodbanks in almost all big town these days? That is because some people live in poverty! Close your eyes if you wish, but that is why Lynne is upset.

I am trying to hold down the swearing - but please do not be so naive and a complete and utter snob quite frankly. Fair enough, vote in the way you wish, BUT do not rub it in others faces how well off you were/are and that cutting back on a coffee is a hardship. It is a LUXURY

1 No problem. Your money your choice.
2 You don't want to do anything to help the economy eg buy coffee......maybe never buy food grown by British farmers. If you feel that strongly maybe you should arrange to leave.

Looby, I understand that. Interestingly it's likely that my DH and I will benefit financially from leaving the EU but voted to remain anyway. We feel this is better for future generations - we vote Labour for the same reason.

I really am going now before Lyn comes back.

I already have cut back spending to essentials like food. I think that's a normal reaction to uncertain times. Would have normally have spent a bit in town, had a coffee that sort if thing but I think it's best to wait and see what's happens.

This is all getting a bit weird, houses, cars, childcare, are your children not going to support themselves at all in adulthood. It will take more than a few takeaways, and living abroad won't be cheap

Look she's not cutting back because she needs to but to punish the country, her country for voting differently. So you fuck off if you dislike this country do much why don't you all fuck off.
Some people who voted out don't own a home or can afford treats and certainly don't stop buying them to punish the fucking economy. The op is a twat. A prize naice middle class twat with no concept of life in the poor parts of the country.

And a lot of those people you're speaking about voted out to punish the country.

I actually bought some shares on Friday to try and help the UK economy. Fine have a sulky fit because you didn't get your own way if it makes you feel better. Have you really never been disappointed in an election result before?
Save if you need the money.
We've never been an enthusiastic EU member, maybe if we leave politicians will have one less thing to blame for things not working out.
The current EU structure is unsustainable anyway it was just whether it changed with us in it or outside it. I suspect 20 years from now the world will be the same regardless of our EU vote. The EU hasn't done wonders for Greece.
I voted remain but never saw the EU as some sort of socialist utopia the way some on here do. It's largely controlled by the banks and multinationals and the unelected commission. The EU MEPs never wanted Junker, he was imposed by other unelected commissioners against their will.

I hadn't realised - it's not deliberate - but I think a natural reaction actually. You just think, maybe next week. No I'll not today.

Punish the economy?
Confused

Ridiculous reason for cutting back but being a little careful with spending during uncertain economic times isn't. I'm very shocked anyone would want to 'punish the economy' of the place they live because they didn't agree with a political vote. I'm really struggling to see your view to be honest.

Some of us will never be able to "accept" that we will have to buy our children cars & houses. op - might manage the child care.
Anyway, there isn't that option. From what you've said, l don't think you are going to suffer like some.

The thing is, it is generally peoples reaction to cut back on spending when there is uncertainty.

DH's business went silent for two weeks after nine eleven.

He has been told not to mention politics at all with clients at work, but he is genuinely scared he won't be making as much money in the near future. To deal with this, he is pointing out that there hasn't been any major financial impact yet to anyone he meets using graphs and has decided not to buy a brand new car for himself and give me his, but to replace my old one with another old (but working) one. He thinks it's the best financial decision at the moment. Basically he's scared to spend, and if DH is scared to spend so will the rest of country, no matter how many graphs DH posts on FB.

So, IMO, YABU.

I get what you mean op.
I voted remain and I'm working class. I have a mortgage and very old car. I work very pt (due to Dhs job and young DC)
I do go out for coffee need my caffeine fix!
I get my hair dyed I'm very grey and don't want to be
I like meeting my friends and having a chat over a drink
So obv I am Satan?
Is that right?
Because you don't have those things or can't do those things people who do and can are inherently evil?
^
This is why our country is now going to be run by neo fascists and why racist abuse is already on the rise.
I'm cutting back too op...no more coffees or meals out.
Ditto getting my hair dyed, I'm going to try and do it myself again this will NOT go well
Not the end of the world, no.
But lots of those in the service industries (which lets face it is basically all the uk have left) like hairdressers, nail techs, cleaners, gardeners will find themselves out of a job.
People will stop spending.
That's what happens in a recession.
And that's where we are headed.

I apologise if I've offended anyone but the op with my language.
I'm lucky that I'm not that badly off, I have a house albeit with a mortgage and I don't have to choose between eating and heating but a lot do.
Sone people make those changes to keep the bailiffs from the door not to teach the great unwashed a lesson.

I also bought shares in the FTSE on Friday. I hope they bounce back and I am rewarded, of course, but even if not, at least I will have tried to bolster things a little. I don't have BIG money, but it was the best gesture I could make.

By the damn coffee!

I'm also applying for Eu passports for me and the DC
I'm so disgusted at this result. My children's futures are looking pretty bleak now.
Have already had a lot of "Well go and fuck off then" posts on here when people mention leaving.
Be careful what you wish for
Because highly skilled people will go - and take their taxes with them.
The only people left will be the elderly and uneducated.

Still don't begrudge others their lifestyle
And your language makes you sound unhinged.
