Is going to cause far more harm then the vote itself?

The mudslinging, the accusations, families falling apart and no longer speaking.

It's happened, we're out. So what next?

Shall we all just sit here and weep and turn our hatred towards those that voted a different way?

We live in a great country and have so much to be proud of. Our amazingly diverse culture is often the envy of the rest of the world and the vote to leave will not change that, or at least it shouldn't if we don't let it.

Our every move is now being scrutinised by the rest of the world so can we please stop with the nastiness I'm looking at you remainers and focus our energies on coming together and moving forward?

"However... you do think they are all racist, or so you said there I just don't know any of them in RL and they're not the kind of people I could ever align with and make the best of things with as their reasons are all racism and anger driven."

I'm honestly not sure how I can make myself any clearer but I will try - every single person I know in RL voted on the back of racism, without a single exception, so those people in my real life, I can never align myself with them and their views, nothing could make me do so. This is, I feel what is driving the anger and fear because I think that's true for many remainers - the people they know in their real life are just not the reasoned and well meaning people that are apparently in abundance here on MN.

mirime · 26/06/2016 16:35

It's ok OurBlanche :)

On the plus side perhaps this will break down some of the left/right divide. My office is mainly left wing with a couple of Conservative voters and we've all been united over this. It's been quite entertaining us all vigorously agreeing with each other. If we could get rid of FPTP I actually think proportional representation leading to more coalitions and cooperation would be a good thing - as well as leading to people thinking it's worthwhile voting. I think the high turn out for the referendum is an indicator that we should be looking at our voting system again.

OurBlanche · 26/06/2016 16:42

There is also the now more politically aware teen vote. That hasn't happened for a while. Here, there were a number of A level students who finished physics(?) and went straight to the polling station. They had very definite, cogent views on how/why they should vote.

It doesn't matter if we agree or disagree with them, the fact that they voted was a good thing. Long may it continue.

LittleBearPad · 26/06/2016 17:15

The Tory majority isn't that stable or large. I don't think they'll make it to 2020

LittleBearPad · 26/06/2016 17:48

Sorry. I don't know why that posted again so much later.

StealthPolarBear · 26/06/2016 18:03

I think farage is a strong leader.
That worries me.

MangoMoon · 26/06/2016 18:36

Any ideas then on how we should be doing this? All I keep hearing from the Leave camp is how we should toughen up and get on with things but no one seems to be saying how.* How does the person who is seriously worried about their job move forward? How does someone who is in the middle of a house purchase and can now see it all collapsing move forward?*

You deal with it like people always have and do.

You take a deep breath, suck it up, put your shoulder to the wheel & press on.
You look for the positives & silver linings where you can.
You keep an eye out for opportunities.

This is exactly what these rafts of disaffected, disenfranchised working class people have done for the last 20+ years by the way.

PastoralCare · 26/06/2016 18:44

The marriage wasn't a great one, but wasn't terrible either.

But some don comes along and promises the moon and then you realise he just wanted a quickie and had no plan to carry out his vague promises.

news.sky.com/video/1717859/islam-there-is-no-brexit-plan

and there is the 350 million pounds bus which Farage said was a mistake.

Yes, that's why former mining areas are shining examples of success and regeneration.

You make it sound so easy, it's not. I grew up in the South Wales valleys, I'd not want to deliberately put any other communities in the situation we were left in after the 80s and that we have not yet recovered from.

MangoMoon · 26/06/2016 20:08

It's not easy, I never said it was.

Have you seen the thread where people are upset at the turmoil? One poster can't afford her £3k garden shed now, a couple are having to reduce the hours of their cleaners & gardeners, a couple now can't afford their 2nd home & quite a few are reduced to just one holiday a year now.

Hardly what I would call devastation tbh, far from it.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 26/06/2016 20:15

so the retailer selling the shed has lost trade, the cleaner/gardener are financially worse off, the estate agents/hotels etc lose trade. Now multiply that by 60 million.

Musicinthe00ssucks · 26/06/2016 21:06

We're not "out". The referendum result isn't binding and could turn out to be nothing but an expensive opinion poll

How deluded. The vote was for out. On Question Time this evening all of the remain panel said, when repeatedly asked, that there would be no second referendum as democracy has to be respected.

honeyroar · 26/06/2016 21:24

It will take years for the split in this country to heal. And people who voted out telling people that voted remain to "get a grip" or posting crappy pictures of Pooh and Piglet still being friends on Facebook won't help. Let people grieve and be angry for a while, it's only a couple of days fgs! There was an issue at work a few years ago that totally divided the workforce and set them against each other. Things are only just healing five years on. This will probably be worse as we can't just leave and it's done, there will be years of consequences that may keep fuelling the upset. That's life. You can't just pull the rug from under the feet of half the nation (well voters) and not expect some bruises and resentment..

CaptainCrunch · 26/06/2016 21:34

No, I'm not deluded. And it's got nothing to do with having a 2nd referendum. It's incredible how blinkered so many people are to actual facts in this situation.

Musicinthe00ssucks · 26/06/2016 21:38

CaptainCrunch yes, yes you are. You need to realise that the vote has been cast and article 50 will be triggered. The EU have said that this has got to be done as soon as possible. What makes you think that the EU even want the UK now?

CaptainCrunch · 26/06/2016 21:45

No. I'm not. No legal provision to uphold the eu referendum decision was made. Any prime minister can legally choose to ignore the result. I'm not saying for a minute this will actually happen but I'm not "deluded" I'm stating facts.

ApocalypseSlough · 26/06/2016 21:45

Music the EU has said it must be triggered but there's a massive vacuum where the government once was. There is still time.

CaveMum · 26/06/2016 21:48

This Facebook post sums it all up for me: www.facebook.com/dom.beaven/posts/10153494690506086

"Right. Fuck this. We're ALL up shit creek and we need a paddle. Now, not in three months.

Fellow Remain voters: Enough already. Yes, we're all pissed off but navel gazing ain't gonna help. Not all 17 million Leave voters can possibly be racist northern pensioners without an O level to their name. Maybe they have a point about this quitting the EU thing? Maybe not. Whatever, we are where we are and no amount a whinging is gonna change that. Allegedly we're the intelligent ones, so get your thinking caps on.

Leave voters. Well done. Good game. We hear you. Now you need to get stuck in to the aftermath and not just piss off back to Wetherspoons. (Just banter, twats!). And the first person to say they "want their country back" gets deported to fucking Gibraltar. OK?

Politicians.

David. Fuck off. Shut the door behind you. Now.

George. You may be a twat but you're our twat. Plus you know the passwords for our Junior Savers account. Get your calculator. Drop the face-like-a-slapped-ass routine. You're on.

Boris. Sorry mate. That photo of you abseiling by your scrotum over the London Olympics while waving a Union Jack can't ever be un-taken. Plus, you'll never be able to appear on Question Time again without some sturdy Glaswegian nurse asking where the fuck her 350 million quid is. Not only will she have a very good point, she'll be wearing a T shirt that shows you gurning in front of that fucking bus! No captains hat for you I'm afraid.

Theresa. You're in charge love. Get the biggest shoulder pads you've got. We need Ming The Merciless in drag and you'll scare the shit out of 'em.

Nicola. Yep. Fair cop. You probably could get us on a technicality, as could London. But we fucking love shortbread. And oil. And to be honest you're probably the best politician we've got, so we need you on side. Sort your lot out and we promise never to mention that Jimmy Krankie thing again (although it is pretty uncanny) and we'll make you a Dame once we're sorted. Bring Ruth Davidson. She kicks ass.

Opposition party. We'll need one. Someone take Jeremy and John back to the British Legion Club where you found them. Take Nigel as well. Give back their sandals, buy them a pint, then go to Heathrow and collect David Milliband. Fuck it. Lets gets Ed Balls as well. He keeps George on his toes. I think he works on the lottery kiosk at Morrisons now?

Oh. And Mark Carney. Give him a knighthood and tell him to keep that shit coming. We definitely need more of that good shit!

Everyone set? Right. Hold the Easyjet. We're going to Brussels and this ain't no hen party.

#weneedaplan Share!"

MangoMoon · 26/06/2016 22:06

Love it Cavemum! Grin

MrHannahSnell · 26/06/2016 22:09

CaveMum that's the best thing I've read about this whole sorry mess. Thanks.

mirime · 26/06/2016 23:56

Mango moon yeah well, I don't have any of that, have missed out on only possible holiday this year and that would have been with the in-laws. We're not poor but we're not well off either and we'll be tightening our belts due to uncertainty - which will be more money not being spent, which I know if everybody does it will be disastrous for the economy but there you go. It's possible I could very indirectly lose my job or have reduced hours because of this and we have to plan accordingly.

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 00:18

I hope that things turn out ok mirime, really Flowers

I've had big sweeping changes this past couple of years which have seen me lose my job, my health, my marriage, my house - but you just somehow find a way because you have to.

I don't wish bad things for anyone Smile

mirime · 27/06/2016 10:05

I know. Been there with the health issues, both myself and DH.

I worry for those who won't find a way, who don't have that resilience, who are already on the edge.

MangoMoon · 27/06/2016 10:11

I do too, of course.
It's the 'my world is over because I can't have my £3k shed' types that I'm finding grating at the moment is all.

I hasten to add, this phenomena of shed troubles is only something I have seen on MN, my real world experiences are of course vastly different! Grin

clam · 27/06/2016 12:45

LOVE IT!!! Grin
