To point out that not ALL people who voted leave are racist

I'd describe myself as extreme left. I voted leave because the EU's undemocratic. Today I wake up to ALL of my Facebook posting statuses about how they feel sick etc. all my friends are liberal, some of them would hate me if they knew. But if I was asked outright I'd probably be honest. I've made new friends recently who would definitely never speak to me again if they knew though. I feel like everyone who voted leave has been branded a racist. I feel uncomfortable that probably lots of them are sad I feel very uneasy being lumped in with them and might come to regret my decision

Posted this elsewhere but in need of some hand holding I think! Or maybe someone who feels the same way? Anyone?

You say we're more enriched is that because you think our own culture wasn't up to much?

JudyCoolibar · 24/06/2016 09:35

I never imagined everyone who voted leave was racist. However, a large proportion were, and the vote has now validated them. Does it make you happy that racists all over the country are rejoicing this morning?

RobinsAreTerritorialFuckers · 24/06/2016 09:36

But, Humphrey, democracy has nothing to do with it. No one can explain how being outside the EU is somehow more democratic than being inside it.

So it comes back to the fact that people who voted to leave decided they had important reasons to condone racism.

SilverBirchWithout · 24/06/2016 09:37

You and thousands of other people who voted exit will very quickly live to regret this. Sounds like you are already, what a considered choice you made Sad. Words almost fail me.

What a shame people like you won't only be the ones losing their jobs, paying higher prices, living in a country that despises immigrants, see their pension pots reduce, see taxation increase, see public services slashed even further. I despair.

eyebrowse · 24/06/2016 09:38

I'm confused about why the very left people wanted out. I'm pragmatic and want to be able to get things done.

Leaving the EU means the end Great Britain as Scotland will vote to leave. This means a conservative majority in England for a long time so the country is going more and more right wing so further and further from what the very left wing would like?

Also the very left wing are pro Islam, due to the bad deal in Israel, and a leave vote strengthens anti immigrant feelings

could OP explain why democracy trumps all this?

JudyCoolibar · 24/06/2016 09:38

wasonthelist, the fact that you want to disclaim the undoubted truth that, actually, you certainly did vote with Johnson and Farage is fascinating. Why don't you want to be associated with them? And what is your view on the fact that your vote has put them in positions of massive power?

TheLionSleepsAha · 24/06/2016 09:39

I'm not racist, my children aren't European, I voted leave.

There are a lot of toys being thrown out of prams this morning! I'm not thick either. I think a lot of people are not used to not getting their own way, acting like petulant children. Wait until France and Holland leave.

Rebecca2014 · 24/06/2016 09:40

Democracy only exists on the extreme left and do you notice they are the ones prone to violent outrage and abuse?

longdiling · 24/06/2016 09:41

Unfortunately Op, the left have been largely silent on the issue. Where was Jeremy Corbyn in all this?! Which means voters like you have had no left wing 'leave' voice

ArcheryAnnie · 24/06/2016 09:42

Esmerelda I understand that all leave voters aren't racists. But it doesn't really matter what your motivations are, when you have handed a mandate to a group who are racist.

You may be a good, kind, person, and I am glad for that. But however non-racist you personally are, you have voted alongside people who are racist, and who are pushing heavily for racist outcomes. You have voted to give racists power.

RobinsAre makes the point very well.

Normandy144 · 24/06/2016 09:44

You may well not be racist, but I'm questioning your intelligence now. I don't want to hear that you might regret your decision. You should have been 100% happy to make it in the first place and if you weren't then a vote for remain would have been the more sensible option. Leavers have very much made their beds so they can go lie in it.

wasonthelist · 24/06/2016 09:44

No one can explain how being outside the EU is somehow more democratic than being inside it.

Plenty of us have tried, we just get shut down by patronising and/or vicious invective. I can't explain something to people who won't listen.

Costacoffeeplease · 24/06/2016 09:44

*Today 09:30 LifeIsGoodish

Unfortunately, whatever your reasons for Leaving, whatever your personal philosophy and moral/ethical way of life, by voting Leave you hand over the power to people who are racist and xenophobic.*

In a nutshell

Well done

Just5minswithDacre · 24/06/2016 09:45

Completely agree OP

And this is the legacy we hand on, hailed by the fascists, the racists, the hate-mongerers, the neo-nazis, the far right. Brilliant. Well done Britain, you had one job and you spectacularly fucked it up.

wasonthelist · 24/06/2016 09:48

you have voted alongside people who are racist,

This always happens. Some racists voted remain, too.

Costacoffeeplease · 24/06/2016 09:51

Not many, I bet

CrimsonKing · 24/06/2016 09:52

To those that voted out - you should know that by backing a campaign based predominantly on anti-migrant sentiment you have made me feel unwelcome and self-conscious of the colour of my skin.

For the first time in over 37 years of living in England I am scared that I may now become a target of racial hatred and abuse.

You may not be racist but you held the racist hand and you followed the racist agenda.

my heart bleeds for those who voted out and now feel ashamed. You got into bed with Johnson, Farage, Putin, Trump et al, and now feel a bit dirty. Tough shit.

Ifailed Le Pen is calling for a referendum- silly cow!

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 24/06/2016 09:59

I couldn't vote in a once in a generation decision that has our entire constitutional approach in the balance because my view for one reason happens to land me on the same side as some unpalatable people. This is bigger than that.

TheWindInThePillows · 24/06/2016 09:59

We do not see or experience the wealth of these epicentres, but we do see and experience a loss of public services especially over the last 15 years and common sense would link this to the seismic shift in immigration, without a controlled immigration policy

My point here would be a) do you now think you will experience more wealth and an increase in public services as a result of Brexit? (obvious answer no) b) if we couldn't control non-EU immigration before, why would we able to control it now?
