which we would not have if we left. I am not after scaremongering rhetoric, but facts. I really like to have a balanced point of view, but I cannot for the life of me see any reason to remain. So give me some FACTS

Oh and another €166 million from ESF www.erdfconvergence.org.uk/growth-programme/esf

minniewinnie · 10/06/2016 16:40

And finally €9.6million from the EAFRD http://www.erdfconvergence.org.uk/growth-programme/esf

Lots of numbers there to get started with. I know this is based on Cornwall and IoS, this is because we're so bleedy poor down 'ere! Grin . Regional development funds are also available elsewhere in the UK ....

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 10/06/2016 16:53

Likewise Wales is a net beneficiary of European funding. I believe the PM has already said that this funding will not be matched if we leave the EU (surprise surprise Hmm). Not that Welsh voters are aware of this. I am sure the Wales will vote Leave despite having so so much to lose.

Frank that is incorrect, you don't have to pay for medical treatment in the EUand then be reimbursed. I have had to seek medical treatment for DD while on holiday abroad a few times (badly managed asthma) and have never had to pay. In fact out out of 4 times we only had to show our EHIC card twice. The other 2 times we were given a copy of the bill for our records.

European court of human rights, gives us things like the right to life and allowed one of the mothers who lost a child at Hillsborough to argue that he had a right to life.

Clean beaches / swimming water, the blue flag was originally a French idea, when the EU started to use it Britain just declared ti didn't have beaches at many places, including Blackpool. The EU has forced us and other countries to clean up the beaches.

Erasmus - your child can study or do a work placementin Europe an you and they pay £0. In fact for work placements they will get pocket money on top of flights and accommodation.

Paid holidays.

Medical treatment in other EU countries, people on dialysis can now go to Spain (or wherever) and receive treatment while away.

We can bring as much booze as we can carry in to the country without paying tax, anyone else remember you when you could only bring a litre of spirits back?

Compensation for an flights delayed coming in to or out of the an EU airport.

Free university education alongside the locals in some EU countries (And often in English) .

Protected food name status for pork pies and pasties.

KateInAState78 · 10/06/2016 22:17

If we left, we wouldn't have so many occasions to hear Ode to Joy. For me, it is a rather rocking anthem and I love it. It's probably not sufficient to affect my vote though.

Also, the EU gave us those lovely slimline passports rather than the old chunky blue ones.

Spinflight · 10/06/2016 23:38

And the first of them to Maggie Thatcher :(

simplepedant · 11/06/2016 00:00

Equal wages for men and women, is from the equal pay act 1970, pre-dates EU
I'm coming late to this thread OP, but I don't think anyone has corrected you on this. Equal pay for men and women is laid down in the Treaty of Rome. The 1970 Act was passed before we joined the EU in order that we would be compliant. It gave employers 5 years to comply and actually came into.effect in 1975 as part of the Sex Discrimination Act. Given how insistent you are that others should substantiate every claim they make about the advantages of the EU, perhaps you should be a.bit less cavalier with the assertions you make in putting them down.

STIDW · 11/06/2016 00:20

UK only produces 60% of our food. Being a member of the EU gives us secure access to the food we need.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/06/2016 00:37

Me. I'm from the EU and I think I'm pretty great.

nearlyhellokitty · 11/06/2016 12:27

Here's the economic history analysis voxeu.org/article/britain-s-eu-membership-new-insight-economic-history

I alro think that the Paris climate agreement owes an enormous amount to EU action

nearlyhellokitty · 11/06/2016 12:28

Oh and the Northern Ireland peace agreement

nearlyhellokitty · 11/06/2016 12:28

Smile ginger

Asuitablemum · 11/06/2016 21:29

Political stability and no war in Europe.

JassyRadlett · 11/06/2016 21:38

All of the above, plus I quite like beaches where the water isn't liberally laced with shit.

whydidhesaythat · 12/06/2016 19:40

Aqueducts

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2016 21:53

Are you getting the Roman Empire confused with the European Union there?

caroldecker · 12/06/2016 22:23

I think the Equal pay act was a response to the Dagenham strike rather than an EU law. EU law didn't impact equal pay until the early 80's

whydidhesaythat · 12/06/2016 22:34

Bike-, the thread title did remind me of a certain sketch :)

TwoLeftSocks · 12/06/2016 22:41

A means of tackling transboundary pollution, protection for our most valuable wildlife sites, cleaner beaches, air and water and a legislative framework for environmental clean up.

elQuintoConyo · 12/06/2016 22:45

Sanitation and the wine.

And aquaducts.

SpringingIntoAction · 12/06/2016 22:48

Nothing, zero, zilch.

I have been searching for something that the EU has given us that we could not achieved for ourselves for 42 years.

I am still waiting.

whydidhesaythat · 12/06/2016 22:51

Angela Merkel on the telly

And roads

tilder · 12/06/2016 22:52

Bathing Water Directive - no more shit in the sea (apart from during storms, nothing is perfectGrin)

Habitats Directive. Makes SSSI look like a waste of paper. Protects important, wild, open rare etc habitats and species across the EU. If you ever visit wide open countryside, or see a species like the dormouse, you probably have this Directive to thank.

Birds Directive. For birds, wetlands etc. Ever been to an estuary and seen the birds? Or seen a golden eagle on springwatch? You have this Directive to thank.

Water Framework Directive. Improves the quality of inland and coastal waters. Improves the management of water bodies, reducing pollution, etc.

Shellfish Waters Directive. Makes sure those oysters aren't laced with E.coli

Climate Change. Lots of stuff here. Massively important. The uk is a world leader in renewables.

Etc

tilder · 12/06/2016 22:56

springingintoaction we could have done these ourselves. But we didn't. We were the dirty man of Europe. No longer thoughSmile

Am sure Boris would love to scrap some of these. Am sure he sees them as red tape. Unfortunately they haven't bothered to give us any facts regarding the red tape they would cut, so it's a bit difficult to know.

SpringingIntoAction · 12/06/2016 22:58

The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)] that a beach, marina or sustainable boating tourism operator meets its stringent standards.

The standard was first adopted by the French (not the EU) and has been adoptedby countries world-wide (most of which are not in the EU).

The EU adopted it later - adopted, not developed ot iniaiated, just jumped on the bandwagin to claim it as an EU initiative - like it does with everything it falsely claims credit for.

Don't you think that if the EU was actually worth the £millions we send it each week we wouldn't even have to ask what benefits it brought and we certainly wouldn't be scrabbling around for trivia in a vain attempt to justify this undemocratic bureaucracy

It's a shame that when they are brainwashing kids about 'green issues' they don't also stop to teach them the value of democracy and being a sovereign country that can make it's own laws.

By the way, the co-founder of the Green Party in the Uk, Baroness Jenny Jones is a LEAVE campaigner - strange that. And if these EU directives were actually effective we wouldn't need the organisation Surfers Against Sewage - but we do.
