Ive attached the picture of "operation black votes poster". I found it offensive and think that if shoe was on the other foot, there would probably be nationwide protests and a lawsuit. Why is it that when things target white people nothing is ever said?

I can't see how it can ever be a good thing or even acceptable to perpetuate nasty stereotypes about any particular group. I also can't see how trying to divide people into "us" and "them" identity politics can ever be a good thing within a country.

Stirring up intra-community distrust, fear and suspicion is strong stuff. Once you whip it up, you cannot necessarily control where it will lead.

It's not helpful or even justifiable imho.

I meant an Isis male opposite an old British women.

Lweji · 27/05/2016 17:46

Isis male opposite an old British women.

How is that relevant to an election or referendum in the UK?
Do ISIS members vote or have a voice in the UK?

SoupDragon · 27/05/2016 18:00

You are missing the point. Imagine a poster for which showed that scenario.

The only thing that the white person in the original poster needed to be was white. Not some nasty stereotype that is not representative.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 27/05/2016 18:17

I disagree soup - I think it's important that the other person is an aggressor, because the point is that your vote is worth as much as those of people who oppress you.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 27/05/2016 18:18

It's not 'use your vote against white people' it's 'use your vote against those who oppress you'.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 27/05/2016 18:29

It's a lazy way of saying if you're in one of the ethnic groups that are less likely to register to vote, you should register to vote so you have as much power as this trite old stereotype.
It's a strange poster to have at referendum time though as it could be seen as supporting Remain.
It's confused in its message and therefore fails.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2016 19:01

because the point is that your vote is worth as much as those of people who oppress you.

I disagree completely. It has nothing to do with "oppression" and everything to do with making sure that ethnic minorities vote. Previous posters make this clear.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2016 19:07

The other reason "use your vote against those who oppress you" doesn't fit is because the sterorypical racist thug is not the one doing the oppressing. It's the people in positions of power - police, managers, politicians.... All people who just look like ordinary people.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 27/05/2016 21:06

Racist thugs don't oppress people??

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2016 21:51

Racist thugs oppress in a different way to be fair.

You are more likely to be oppressed at the ballot box by someone in a suit, so Soup's point is a fair comment.

Racist thugs are more likely to intimidate on the street, rather than through political debate.

Considering the current polarisation in political speech, I'm not so sure.
People like Trump are getting nominated. And racist positions are getting more common in UK politics.
