Ban non-stun slaughter

Please sign and share the petition, I have finally got this through parliament, using new laws and ruling, so it's not like those in the past

In modern society, we believe more consideration needs to be given to animal welfare and how livestock is treated and culled.

We believe non-stun slaughter is barbaric and doesn't fit in with our culture and modern-day values and should be banned, as some EU nations have done.

In a landmark case, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ruled that a ban on the ritual slaughter of animals without prior stunning does not violate the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The Court considered that the protection of public morals, to which Article 9 of the Convention referred was not indifferent to the living environment of individuals covered by its protection and, in particular, to animals.

Can you explain a bit more for people like me who are pretty clueless how animals are slaughtered in this country? What is the usial practise, what is/isn't allowed for example?
Are there any benefits for non-stun slaughter or is it purely a cost thing?

Generally non-stun slaughter is done for religious reasons so that meat is kosher or halal in line with following Jewish and Muslim practices.

100% of all kosher (Jewish) meat slaughtered in the UK is non-stunned.
65% of all halal (Muslim) meat slaughtered in the UK is non-stunned.

Probably speed has a lot to do with it , if you only have to do one process of slaughter without the pre stun.
Even stunning has to be done properly , if it isn't used correctly the animal can get the stun probe in the eye or ear
And if they are contaminated by grease or hair they are less effective
But religion - some religions prohibit the consumption of pre-stunned meat .

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/05/2024 23:36

The issue some religions have is not the stun in itself, its that the stun might kill the animal outright. I know most halal meat slaughtered in the UK is stunned. I'm not sure about kosher meat.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/05/2024 23:40

I think Kosher meat needs the blood to drain so the animal dies of Exsanguination

If the stunnning causes damage to the brain then thats the cause of death . ?

I am from a family of butchers and G Grandfather was licenced to do his own slaughtering.

The rabbi used to get chased out of the slaughterhouse, he was so hated.
This was in the 40s/50s. Barbaric that it's STILL going on

FineWordsButterNoParsnips · 24/05/2024 12:13

Signed.

I just wanted to say thank you to all those who have signed and apologise for not responding to some questions, I wasn't getting any notifications that anyone was adding comments. So assumed it didn't meet the requirements of a post.

Parliament is now dissolving, so the petition will be closed. Once the new government is up and running, sadly they close down all petitions and could take months for a response so I'll have to start again from the beginning.

I'll let everyone know once it's back live, I'm not giving up on the animals and to try and ban this barbaric process.

Many thanks

Martin.

A petition mums net to put an end to non stun slaughter was closed early due to the General Election. At closure it had reached 9,845 signatures. It seems that no one is prepared to speak out regarding the vile practice of non stun slaughter. . From the RSPCA based on the latest food standards agency the number of animals slaughtered without stunning is 26 million chickens, 3.1 million sheep and 51,000 cattle. These terrified animals have their throat slit, hung upside down and left to die in agony. Meat slaughtered this way reaches into all aspects of the food chain, schools, hospitals, restaurants, sports venues, fresh, tinned and frozen food, all served up without our knowledge and freedom to make a choice. Please support the latest petition to end this barbaric practice. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700557
