Solid shampoo and conditioner recommendations please!

Am looking for solid shampoo and conditioner recommendations please. Would ideally like to be palm oil and sls free and not lush as don't really get on with a lot of their products.
Have been looking at the lamazuna but they don't seem to do a conditioner and also would just like some opinions of those who have tried it. Thanks in advance!

My grandmother washed her hair with Fairy soap - big green bar. I remember her talking about rinsing it in rainwater. She only washed her hair once a week and although it looks lovely in photos taken when she was younger, it wasn't very lovely when she got older. But she didn't care! Her sister, my aunt had lovely hair into her nineties.

anotherneter · 17/11/2018 20:15

I’ve also considered moving over to solid shampoo too but it doesn’t sounds like there are any decent ones unfortunately. Have you ever considered using shampoo refills instead OP?

ABitCrapper · 17/11/2018 20:20

I tried loads and they all left my hair sort of sticky and waxy.
Then I went away for a weekend and just took my normal unperfumed, shower/hand soap and used that - revelation!
So I just use whichever cheap "pure" none also, palm oil etc soap I can get. And I've had absolutely no problems.
I think the soaps marketed as shampoo tend to be superfatted which can leave a residue, while "normal" soap doesn't.
Currently using a rather nice local made honey and milk soap. Leaves my hair feeling lovely.

ABitCrapper · 17/11/2018 20:23

Oh and I'm in a hard water area :) so just try an ethical "normal" soap, not a shampoo bar is my tip.

I worry about all the plastic though. Looking around the bathroom I see so much plastic!

What did they do before plastic was invented? I remember the old metal toothpaste tubes but shampoo was always plastic bottles.

ABitCrapper · 18/11/2018 11:15

Glass bottles?

anotherneter · 18/11/2018 11:23

I guess the reason why it isn’t in metal tubes is down to cost

Rabbitjam · 18/11/2018 11:25

Another recommendation for soulful soaps

FekkoThePenguin · 18/11/2018 11:29

Now I’ve been reading the history of shampoo! It’s from India and is only about 200 years old as we know it. It was originally glass bottles...

ABitCrapper · 18/11/2018 18:46

I wouldn't want to be dropping a glass bottle in the shower or bath....

girlandboy · 18/11/2018 22:17

Soulful soaps have palm oil in their ingredients list which I'm trying to avoid.

The Friendly Soap company don't use palm oil. I find their shampoo brilliant. It doesn't leave a waxy residue on my hair and I'm in a very hard water area. I also don't need a conditioner with this shampoo.

Woodward12 · 23/11/2018 13:05

I use Waves from Lush too and it feels weird when rinsing it but leaves my hair nice (if I condition) and it gets way less greasy.

After a conditioner recommendation too as use bottled currently

barneymcgroo · 03/12/2018 20:37

Just started using friendly soap, and it's great. Previous ones left my hair feeling sort of sticky - I couldn't get my fingers through it (my standard method of brushing...).

seventhgonickname · 18/12/2018 09:57

We have tried the lush shampoo but have noticed the waxiness.Dd has short hair so doesn't mind it but washes with normal shampoos as well to stop the wax build up.
I have long hair and it makes my hair lank and I have to wash it more often so have gone back to liquid shampoo.
I used to like the body shop refill system back in the day before it became an irrelevance.

marko2002 · 16/07/2019 07:32

I know I've recommended Amica Soap before but on the subject of hard water they now use a natural additive which helps boost lather and cleansing for hard water, I've always got on with their bars but now I literally only have to use the bar for like 5 seconds and I'm swimming in lather, they do seem to clean better than before too so just a thought for anyone who has hard water or wants a better lather, particularly useful for those with long hair too :)

gotmychocolateimgood · 18/07/2019 18:48

Body shop accept used containers to be reused. You get £5 credit for returning 5 containers.

hawesmead5 · 18/07/2019 19:03

I don't use any shampoo, but use shakakai Powder instead to clean my hair. It works well, but does come in a plastic bag. I then use a conditioner bar from funky soaps.

Abeautifulstar1 · 26/07/2019 20:56

I personally always use vinegar rinse after using a shampoo bar: earthbits.com/products/lavender-shampoo-bar?_pos=1&_sid=b16d31807&_ss=r
This one is really great for oily air, i use some baking soda and water to prepare my hair and then use apple cider vinegar instead of the conditioner. It works great, especially if you live in a hard water area like me.

Abeautifulstar1 · 26/07/2019 20:58

They have a good blog post on how to use shampoo bars too, used all their steps during my transition period and it made a massive difference. I nearly gave up on shampoo bars before finding this as I didn't like the way my hair felt before, but if you follow all the steps it really works! earthbits.com/blogs/earthbits/the-ultimate-helpful-guide-on-how-to-use-shampoo-bars

wikowiko · 26/07/2019 21:02

I use a French one called Fleur de Shampoing. It's the only one that makes my hair feel normal, nice and soft and not tangly. All the rest I've tried are in a drawer waiting to become body soap.

Abeautifulstar1 · 27/07/2019 13:47

@ABitCrapper I had the same problem. I think my hair looks a lot better now than it did before. I suppose i had to get rid of all the residues left by synthetic shampoos on my hair. I think if you are willing to be patient for a couple of weeks, you will probably get there!

EspressoX10 · 31/07/2019 07:36

I'm incredibly picky with my hair and since changing to solid shampoo I've discovered that almost all work for me, as long as I do an apple cider vinegar rinse after.

You can buy it (conchus do fantastic hair rinses) or make it yourself (acv + water + essential oil if you'd like - I use rosemary)

AJC29 · 10/07/2020 15:49

Hi there, I was doing my own research and noticed that this link is broken so thought I'd let everyone know that you can buy shampoo and conditioner bars at New Footprint too. You can see the shampoo and conditioner here newfootprint.co.uk/shop/?swoof=1&product_cat=conditioner,shampoo

Hope that's a helpful replacement!

AmandaHugenkiss · 31/07/2020 14:13

I use the Shine on Shampoo bar by Bath Bubble and Beyond. It lathers up lovely and hair is clean and soft, comes in small cardboard box in an envelope. I’ve tried loads of solid conditioning bars and most have been dreadful. The only one I’ve found leaves my hair conditioned without being lank is Beauty and the Bees real beer Tasmanian conditioner bar. It has lasted me ages, but it’s pretty expensive!

Cakeonthefloor · 01/08/2020 05:51

Beauty kubes work really well. I have tried loads of shampoo bars but gave up. These leave no residue and have no plastic waste.
