Hi

Thought I'd start a thread for the vegans and wannabe vegans.
Anyone here!?

Old thread here.

OP posts:

Cracked it! Trader Joes does an unsweetened almond milk in the fresh aisle rather than cupboard UHT equivalent section which works in tea

Chuckthefucklebrothers · 27/03/2014 08:03

Hello!
Just wanted to stick my head round the door, seeing as I've found you!
Will read the rest if the thread later & hopefully have something more interesting to say. (Never been in a quiche before!)

Sunflower49 · 22/05/2014 23:34

I have been vegan for over ten years...Hi all!

I am currently doing low-carb or low ISH carb, to try to lose some podge. I'm quite slim but I carry some unsightly rolls around my middle probably because I like wine and this diet is working :)

Does anybody have issues with soy milk going off?I only use it for tea and inevitably It's gone thick and gross before I've anywhere near finished it. I suppose it isn't freezable?

lotsohummus · 25/05/2014 18:31

Hi everyone!

I am contemplating becoming vegan after having read 'Eating For Better Health' by Prof Jane Plant. She is very anti-eating dairy and has done a lot of investigation into the health benefits of the Chinese diet, which involves eating very little/no dairy and the links between the Chinese diet and much lower rates of cancer and other diseases prevalent in the West.

I have been suffering from eczema for about a year and nothing will get rid of it. I definitely want to eliminate dairy to see if that will help and am convinced of the health benefits of veganism, just not sure that practically I can take the plunge. I am getting married to a devoted meat-eater and I worry about being a pita when being invited for dinner and stuff (although if I invited a vegan to dinner I would not mind cooking vegan for them).

How do you deal with people bitching 'worrying' about you not eating the right stuff. My mother, for example, still has these outdated notions of milk being the best source of calcium, meat being the best source of protein. People just seem so emotionally attached to meat/dairy and almost get offended if you don't want to eat it, and seem to feel threatened by people wanting to eat in a way which is not the total norm. The thing is, I can see that the 'norm' now is not really what human bodies need or should be eating.

Can anyone recommend any more books on the subject?

ThatBloodyWoman · 10/07/2014 23:29

I have been reading 'The China Study' by T Colin Campbell, lots.

I am finding the arguments for veganism for health pretty bloody compelling tbh.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 13/07/2014 09:34

Just had a great read through this thread. DH and I cook sort-of-vegan at home: no meat or dairy whatsoever, we do have honey and occasional eggs though.
Am off to download netflix to watch some of those documentaries!

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 14/07/2014 08:07

Has anyone tried this website for recipes? I've made a few things off there and it's all been delicious! We're having the ultimate green taco wraps tonight, and this morning I had a green monster smoothie (yum!).

Watched vegucated and Hungry for Change last night but Forks over Knives isn't available on netflix anymore and the DVD is £10 on Amazon which is a bit pricey.
Spoke to DH and he's willing to try living without eggs as more intentional vegans, at the moment we are 97% vegan but I'd make cake with an egg or he'd have honey in a smoothie etc.

Noellefielding · 11/12/2014 11:00

Hello, where is the latest vegan thread?
My teenage son has become vegan and I'd love lunchbox ideas, particularly sweet treats that don't cost the earth.
thanks
I just bought him non leather school shoes...... and he won't eat honey now....
How many vegans don't eat honey? I had no idea there was a vegan position on honey!

FreedomHuntress · 15/12/2014 23:23

Hi, Noelle. I am not sure there is one. This one is pretty quiet, isn't it - but I know there are actually quite a lot of vegans on MN - I see them popping up all over the place!

No vegans eat honey - vegans don't consume ANYTHING that comes from an animal.

You might be better off on an Fb group for vegans/vegans with children.

Here's one for vegan parents: www.facebook.com/groups/270959229775655/?fref=nf
Pinterest could possibly also be your friend!

There are loads and loads of vegan treats in the supermarkets now, usually in the Free From section. Or baking is actually super easy, easier than bothering with eggs I'd say!

plantpower · 30/01/2015 14:26

I've just recently joined mumsnet and wanted to say hi. I went vegan since 1st November last year taking part in the Animal Aid challenge which was to go vegan for the month of November. Having tried it for one month feel committed to staying vegan from now on.
I've got one son and one grandson both of whom are omnivores but very fussy eaters and don't often want to try my vegan goodies. The facebook group for those taking part in the Animal Aid challenge has been great, you need a bit of support otherwise can feel all alone in your diet choice

PlumpingUpPartridge · 02/03/2015 12:23

Alright, vegans. Thought I'd come by to say hello, having been informed of the existence of this 'ere quiche (made with flax seeds I'm sure) Grin

Interrobang · 02/03/2015 12:52

That's great, plantpower, well done on making the switch.
I'm vegan and pretty fussy (I prefer 'particular'! Grin). I am on lots of Fb groups, it sure helps me feel less alone. Though I do have a vegan DH, so that helps.

Hi, Plumping.

CornChips · 02/03/2015 14:53

Hello! Been directed here too. :)The idea of a vegan quiche made me laugh though. :) (I am sure it can be done with tofu).

PlumpingUpPartridge · 02/03/2015 16:02

I tried creating a tortilla with chickpea 'tofu' instead of eggs recently. It wasn't the best substitute IMO but might work well in a quiche.

sweetkitty · 02/03/2015 21:39

Can I jump in and say hello, am about 95% vegan just now, trying to cut out the 5% now but chocolate is too hard just now. I'm enjoying experimenting with vegan recipes.

PlumpingUpPartridge · 02/03/2015 22:36

Sweetkitty, dark chocolate is naturally vegan! Grin

sweetkitty · 02/03/2015 22:51

Yes I know I'm not that great a fan of dark chocolate but I guess it's a case of trying loads to find I've I like Grin

I've been lucky in that I tried Aldis soya milk thinking I'll hate this and I actually don't, I've always had baby tea think a third milk, it's fine with soya milk. DD2 accidentally put cows milk in my tea this morning and I said it's ok I'll drink it as I was in a rush and found I actually couldn't. I've been relying on cheese for far too long as well.

This week I have a stock of meals I've made in the freezer so am doing well.

CornChips · 03/03/2015 06:56

I have not tried aldi soya yet- will do! Have been drinking black tea for a few weeks.

does anyone have any favourite recipes to share? I am doing alot of stuffed peppers and stuffed squash which I love but want to mix it up a bit.

PlumpingUpPartridge · 03/03/2015 07:53

Daal is wonderful and unintentionally vegan, cornchips. In fact my favourite meals are the ones which haven't been veganised!

Jacket potato with beans/curried mushrooms
Pasta with soy beans, sweetcorn and a dollop of olive oil and salt (best served fresh)
Tray-roasted aubergine and tomatoes, plus a tin of chickpeas (Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall recipe)
Stir-fried veg with rice noodles and toasted pine nuts on top
Black pepper tofu (Ottolenghi)
Polenta with butterbeans and cabbage

I like food Blush

CornChips · 03/03/2015 09:12

Oooh, polenta never crosses my mind as a meal.... I need to do that more. I once had the most amazing vegan dish at a pub of all places..... it was fried polenta with creamy (soy cream) mushrooms, spinach and almonds. Gorgeous.

I agree about the best meals being the ones that have not been veganised..... my favourite dishes tend to be Indian curries, Ethiopian stews (I have a craving at the moment), laksas etc (sans fish sauce of course).

Mmm..... feeling inspired again.

sweetkitty · 03/03/2015 13:32

A girl called Jacks blog has loads of great vegan recipes, I love the carrot and coriander burgers had them last night

Also made a Mediterranean veg casserole the other day that was BbC good food and a Spinach and lentil curry.

Passata with any veg and kidney beans with pasta
Root veg casserole
Chickpea and coconut curry

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 03/03/2015 17:42

Ooh I've only just seen this thread this morning! I'm so relieved to see other vegans on mumsnet. Nice break from the "2 kilo chicken feeds 7 of us for 7 weeks" threadsGrin

LiDLrichardsPistachioSack · 03/03/2015 17:47

Butternut squash mac n cheese
(Roasted bnut squash blended with nooch, garlic, onions, veg stock, over rice pasta..mmm)
Miso-tahini dressing for stir fries or chips or roast veg---1/4 cup tahini mixed with tbsp of miso, lemon juice, black pepper, add hot water. Easy.
Cashew cheese- soaked cashews, nooch, mustard, salt, plant milk, blend it in food processor. Great in sarnies with avocado, in vegan lasagne as the 'ricotta', or blended with tomato sauce over pasta etc.
