Hi

Thought I'd start a thread for the vegans and wannabe vegans.
Anyone here!?

Old thread here.

OP posts:
OhTheIroning · 17/01/2014 11:05

I would link to it on here but it linked to my Fb so outs me! Will email you now, I think I have amended it so it doesn't link to my Fb, can someone let me know if it does still?

ButICantaloupe · 17/01/2014 19:23

Oh ok, if you can it would be really useful. If not, don't worry. Smile

How is everyone finding veganuary? I'm finding it really easy. In fact, I have more energy than I've had in years!

OhTheIroning · 17/01/2014 20:00

I already emailed you, Cantaloupe - did it not get to you?

I am so happy to hear your success! :)

ButICantaloupe · 17/01/2014 20:11

Oh no, I haven't got anything. How strange.

Me too, honestly, it's amazing. I've had a swollen stomach and felt sick every morning or 6 months and I've cut out dairy and its gone. Even my hayfever symptoms have improved, and I have chronic rhinitis so it's a really big deal for me.

OhTheIroning · 17/01/2014 21:45

Oops, think I sent it to TBW twice! Sorry, will try now! :)

That is so so awesome. My hayfever cleared up too. :) Amazing. Never had a cold either, in 14 years of veganism. I think that is incredible.

ButICantaloupe · 19/01/2014 00:48

Thank you very much for the links, OhThe. I really like the animal rights ones. It's a really powerful reminder of why I'm partaking in Veganuary.

It's been an amazing experience, I've learnt so much about my intolerances. I have a very high pressure job and I haven't felt any stress since the start of Veganuary. My moods have improved. I could go on...

Suffice to say, I'm converted! Smile

OhTheIroning · 19/01/2014 12:27

You are welcome. And yes, the AR ones are very powerful.
"If we find being vegan hard, imagine how hard it is for the animals we're you're not."

I am so thrilled at your conversion, and all the health benefits. Hurray.

BumPop · 19/01/2014 18:57

This has dropped off the threads I'm on, but still mainly vegan! Smile 24 days so far, with two veggie meals out. Not bad for a big meat eater pre Xmas.

Payday tomorrow so going to get some nutritional yeast and Swedish glace ice cream.

I've been aiming to eat ten fruit or veg a day and am happy with a weekly ave of 9 last week. Not losing any weight though Angry

Been reading about the environmental impact of eating meat and can't believe how ignorant I have been for most of my life. Confused

I am interested in any links anyone has, esp pinterest!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 19/01/2014 19:19

Thanks for the links OTI :)

I have somewhat upset myself by looking through various factory farming images today. But Whilst family members and friends are willing to bury their heads in the sand and complain about the cost of meat, I resolve not to be ignorant. I am not imposing veganism on my DCs (yet Wink) but do not intend to stop myself at the end of Jan and have told DH I will be buying quorn or a vegan option instead of meat for them from now on. While I do the shopping and the cooking, I feel I have the right to say this!

I'm finding it really easy TBW. Everyone I know seems to dislike soya milk in their tea/coffee but I even find that fine.

'Once you come to terms with why you don't eat cats, dogs, monkeys and dolphins, you begin to understand why I don't eat cows, pigs, chickens and lambs' - sums it up quite nicely IMO

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/01/2014 19:23

I did get the pm twice! Thanks OhThe!

I am a bit dim it seems as I cannot seem to do the link. But I'm not very good at computers. I tried putting in the whole thing, then tried going on pinterest and searching - I'm doing something wrong, aren't I? Confused

Does anyone else struggle with the taste of soya milk? It's always been my problem, but I'm really trying to adjust my tastebuds.I nearly choked on my chai with soya milk earlier and decided that for me,that particular combo does not work!

Talking of intolerances,I'm one of those asthma/eczema sorts so giving up or at least limiting dairy has to be good.

ThatBloodyWoman · 19/01/2014 19:25

That is so funny that I x-posted with you MyLife especially re:soya milk in tea.....!!

ButICantaloupe · 19/01/2014 19:30

I like almond milk, TBW.

I'm finding it really easy too. I even ate out and had a wild mushroom risotto. Luckily the restaurant were more than happy to make a vegan friendly version.

My main struggle has been the idiots people I work with who think its 'funny' to tell me about them eating fois gras, veal and foal. It's very challenging to remain professional when I just want to slap them during these conversations.

Thants · 19/01/2014 20:35

Princessflirtypants this is vegan formula I believe: www.cowandgate.co.uk/article/infasoy-milk

I was under the impression all formulas did a soya version.

LinzerTorte · 19/01/2014 20:52

TBW I don't like the taste of soya milk either, at least not in coffee - which is the only thing I'm really struggling with; I haven't found a single palatable (for me) dairy alternative yet. Someone on another thread I'm on recommended soya milk with vanilla, so I tried that today and ended up having to throw my coffee away after one sip. I have a carton of rice/coconut milk to try next, but it seems such a waste to have to buy 1 litre each time - I wish they did taster sizes!

BumPop · 19/01/2014 21:39

Sainsburys are doing 3 for £3 on various non dairy milks. Luckily I like soy, but hazelnut and almond are much nicer, but normally more pricey. I also saw coconut milk today in the same range, so not the gloppy, but yummy, tinned stuff. Worth a try?

ButICantaloupe · 19/01/2014 21:58

I thought coconut milk was very high in fat? I could be wrong though.

OhTheIroning · 19/01/2014 22:02

I tried a new almond chocolate drink, it was amazing! Think we got it in Tescos, but the big stores possibly all stock it, or will, soon. Veganism is on the rise!

The Pinterest links, now I know it isn't linked to my Fb, are:
www.pinterest.com/AMaverickMother/food-veganoreganisable/ for recipes/food ideas. This has non-vegan things on it too that I would easily veganise, but hopefully there are enough already-vegan recipes to make things easy.

And
www.pinterest.com/AMaverickMother/veganforlife-vv/ for the ethics/AR/health/environment side.

foal, Cantaloupe??? I have not heard that one before! Though they are all the same, all deserving of life. But yes, I would say the only difficult thing with being vegan is dealing with idiots. There's a pie chart that says just that! Grin

Chaotic, just so you know Quorn is not vegan. There are mince alternatives though, that are vegan.

For those not liking soya mylk, I would recommend trying all the brands before you rule it out. Some are cheap and watery, others are thicker and creamier. It took us a bit of trial and error to find the ones we preferred. And we always preferred the chilled mylk rather than the long-life ones.

OhTheIroning · 19/01/2014 22:05

The hardest part of being vegan!

OhTheIroning · 19/01/2014 22:06

I don't agree with the other small slices. Veganism is not hard for me.

Thants · 19/01/2014 22:14

I've tried all the milks!
My personal verdict:
Soya milk is best in porridge or lattes or hot chocolate, it makes things very creamy but I don't love the taste on it's own or in tea. Very nice when cooking vegan desserts or 'cheesy' dishes.
Almond milk is ok, very low cal and fat, it's low everything! but horrible in tea. It's got a weird fatty aftertaste.
Coconut milk is delicious even on it's own and good in coffee. Quite creamy but not excessively.
Rice milk is very sweet and a bit watery. Would be good in cereal.
Oat milk is really good! Very creamy and most like cows milk imo. It's nice on it's own or to cook with. It is odd that it's slightly yellowy in colour though...
Hazelnut milk is a bit powdery but nice enough.

ButICantaloupe · 19/01/2014 22:36

Yes, foal FFS! IMO, all creatures (great and small) are deserving of life but I'm sure they are just using 'baby' animals to piss me off! Angry

KatOD · 20/01/2014 00:01

Crap isn't it Cantaloupe, think you just get immune to those idiots after a while, either that or they recognise the tired eye roll and give up the goading.

I had a twatty ex who thought it was hilarious to call me up and tell me when he was eating Brie (only thing I've really missed in 15 years of being vegan). It actually made me feel a bit sick after a while so had the opposite effect!

I also shared a student house with a Portuguese chap who thought my diet was so weird he'd call his mates in Portugal to tell them what I was eating(!!). He was actually a nice chap, the concept was just completely alien to him!

OhTheIroning, daughter is currently veggie and we've agreed that she can decide what she wants to do once she's old enough to understand what she's eating. (Amazing how many people see it as "taking way her right to eat meat" and express this opinion vehemently when I see it from the complete opposite perspective).

ButICantaloupe · 20/01/2014 00:18

Yes, tres annoying, Kat! Angry

Just to share, here are a few articles I like:

blogs.independent.co.uk/2013/05/10/animal-experimentation-crueler-than-we-thought/

blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/08/31/no-more-beef-will-we-all-be-veggie-in-40-years/ (this one has a picture of a dead cow which may be upsetting - but the article is very interesting, IMO)

LinzerTorte · 20/01/2014 08:49

Thants Interesting to read your comparison - oat milk is one of the few that I haven't tried yet, so good to hear that it's like cow's milk as it means I may not have to give up hope/coffee!

Ironing Yes, soya milk does seem to differ from brand to brand; my favourite so far is Alpro. I've just bought cartons of both normal and low-fat soya milk from the chiller cabinet (Joya - not sure whether you can get it in the UK, but it was the only brand available) as well as some oat milk (not available chilled) so will be giving all those a try this week. Other than what I bought today, I think I've now tried all the milks available here apart from millet!

I like the pie chart. Grin Having said that, I haven't had any negative comments for years and years - I certainly don't remember anything in the last decade. My favourite comment was "So what do you eat - cake?", said entirely seriously (just shows how meat- and cake-based Austrian cuisine is!).

BumPop Sadly no Sainsbury's here as I'm abroad. I did manage to find a small carton of coconut milk here today though, which I like in cooking but haven't tried in coffee yet.

Kat How old is your DD? 7 year old DS went veggie a few months ago, but the two older DDs are still meat eaters - although they don't eat a huge amount as I stopped cooking it last year.

LinzerTorte · 20/01/2014 10:24

Update on oat milk: really watery, I added about three times as much as the amount of dairy milk I'd normally have and the coffee still looked black! The taste was quite pleasant though, a bit sweeter than I'd like but I'm sure I could get used to it and it takes the edge off the bitterness of black coffee. The lukewarmness of the coffee was the biggest downside, but maybe it would still be OK if I put less in (I was just trying to get the coffee to turn white!). I'll see if I can get hold of another brand as it sounds quite different from the oat milk you described Thants - it's one of the least creamy milks I've tried (on a par with rice milk).
