Hi

Thought I'd start a thread for the vegans and wannabe vegans.
Anyone here!?

Old thread here.

OP posts:
DandyDindie · 02/01/2014 22:12

Hi all, wanted to stop by and say Happy New Year! I'm already a vegetarian, no leather, fur etc and use soy milk. Would love to commit to veganism but I'm a coeliac and worried about the lack of options I have when eating out or with friends. I also travel overseas a lot with work and so managing my diet can be tricky already, though at home I tend to be stricter.
I'd love to hear from any other coeliac vegetarians or vegans, or any recipes which can easily be converted to vegan coeliac friendly! :-)

PrincessFlirtyPants · 03/01/2014 02:39

Happy new year, Dandy!

I am also vegetarian attempting vegan Smile

My GP tested me for coeliac, but it was negative.

I'm sure I'm intolerant to rice, potatoes and bread. If I eat them my stomach smells to an 5 month pregnancy belly!

BumPop · 03/01/2014 22:29

Hello again. Smile Thank you for all the messages and support. Yay for us all.

So I have been almost 100% vegan for 8 days now. I relaxed the rules for an Indian takeaway which almost certainly was cooked in ghee. Other than that, dairy, meat and fish free. And it's been pretty easy. [

I'm going to treat myself to some homemade baking this weekend, so if anyone has any recipes you'd like to share i'd be very grateful. ideally without egg replacement or such simply because weather may keep me from shopping tomorrow. But I will brave the wind and rain for cake if need be. Grin

TIA.

BumPop · 03/01/2014 22:33

Dandy - vegan and gluten free could be tough. Are you on pinterest? A number of the vegan recipes I've found on there are from gluten free vegan blogs. Could be worth a look?

BumPop · 03/01/2014 22:34

Princess - are you feeling better?

PrincessFlirtyPants · 03/01/2014 22:37

Hi Bump yes, I'm feeling a bit better, thank you.

Well done on achieving 8 days! That's brilliant Smile

I went to a health food store today and there were LOADS of vegan foods, it was heaven.

here is a link Vegan banana bread it's delicious. I've made it loads f times for non vegans and they can tell the difference.

BumPop · 03/01/2014 22:38

Ornamental mentioned Saintsbury's. Have you seen there vegan list? Lots of yummy stuff on there:
www.sainsburys-live-well-for-less.co.uk/recipes-inspiration/healthier-eating/health-advice/health-labelling/vegan-and-vegetarian-product-labelling/

BumPop · 03/01/2014 22:40

Perfect Princess, I have all the ingredients, even black ish bananas. Blush It would be bad to have it for breakfast wouldn't it? Wink

PrincessFlirtyPants · 03/01/2014 22:53

No it's perfect for breakfast! Wink

I did, we do our shopping between Waitrose and Morrisons so I will have to make a little stop to Sainsburys to check it out.

I bought vegan pesto today, I'm really looking forward to trying that with pasta, spinach and pine nuts [yum]

OhTheIroning · 04/01/2014 00:35

Princess, glad you are feeling a bit better. Hope you feel fully well soon.

Welcome, Dandy. Coeliac is hard. I went gf for 40 days, purely as a little personal challenge, and I did manage, but found it pretty hard. Though I did actually feel better for it. We now have reduced our gluten intake, but do still have gluten things. I should cut it out more, I don't think it is good for us.
I am sure the Vegan Society would have some advice for you re the coeliac and being vegan. I have a friend in Australia I can ask, she is vegan and coeliac, though also a new mother so may not have loads of spare time.

Hi, BumPop. Well done on the veganism. As you mentioned yourself, Pinterest is your friend for vegan baking! There is loads!

I am ornamental, btw. I namechanged!

OhTheIroning · 04/01/2014 00:36

www.veganuary.com - some of our new vegans may find this helpful.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 04/01/2014 12:37

Yes, I'm feeling fighting fit today. I've been on my first vegan food shop [excited] I'm so inspired to do the veganuary so thank you for the suggestion OhTheIroning

I bought lots some vegan chocolate. I've had it before and it's so nice!

Can I ask what Palm butter is? It was in some sweets and I know that Palm oil is very unethical so wanted o check if its a similar thing?

Is there any vitamins that I need to take? Or should I be able to get it all from vegan food?

As a vegetarian I got the "[head tilt] how do you know you are getting enough vitamins?" It was particularly enjoying when it can from people who ate processed food! Angry

Does anyone have a DH/DP who still eats meat?

My DH does and I've been trying for a year to get him to stop (it's not working) is it better if he cuts out meat and eats fish? I know the fishing industry is awful as well, but is it (even slightly) more ethical than meat?

Smile
OhTheIroning · 04/01/2014 12:55

Good luck with Veganuary!

Which vegan chocolate do you have?

I understand everything palm is from palm oil. We avoid it. I think it may sometimes get listed as vegetable oil, but what can you do? We avoid if it is clearly palm. Even if it states sustainable sourced. I don't buy it.

We take B12 to be on the safe side, though I do believe we get enough from the fortified foods we have that contain it. It's worth doing your own research on this. Some people think taking supplements is worse for us than not doing so. I am still researching, but in the meantime, we take it.

I met my DH when he was already vegan. I have heard that www.amazon.co.uk/Eat-Like-You-Care-Examination/dp/1492386510/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388839945&sr=8-1&keywords=gary+francione convinces many partners to try veganism. I haven't read it yet.

I would say no, eating fish is not more ethical. In fact, based on how many lives are taken per meal, eating part of a cow is better than eating a fish, as usually one fish meal equals the death of one animals, whereas you can get quite a few meals from one cow. I know tuna are big, but in general! But really, it's all unethical, to eat an animal when we don't need to. IMO.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 04/01/2014 13:18

I've bought some Morrisons own brand, haven't tried it yet though. I've also got a few bars of the 'Nakd' brand, have you ever tried them?

Yes, I need to take some time to look into the vitamins. Smile Thank for your advice, sorry to ask so many Q's!

I know, it's so hard to get my DH to see it though. He isn't interested in becoming a vegetarian or vegan. When I bring it up he thinks I'm 'pressuring' him. I have amazed to get him down to only eating meat 2/3 times a week which is a vast improvement. Hopefully I can get him down to 0 meals. [fingers crossed]

I just thought fishing might have been more ethical as the fish roam the oceans free rather than the meat industry where they are caged for most of their lives. Sad

PrincessFlirtyPants · 04/01/2014 16:06

The Morrisons 'choc and orange bar' is delicious!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 04/01/2014 17:43

Hi all, may I join please? I have been an on/off vegetarian for about 7 years but decided in December I wanted to do Veganuary, with a view to not stopping at the end of the month preferably. My dh and dcs still eat chicken, eggs and dairy but one step at a time hey Wink

I have joined a couple of vegan fb groups which are providing me with a lot of inspiration and my copy of Chloe's Kichen arrived a few days ago and I want to cook almost everything in it!

OhTheIroning · 04/01/2014 22:03

Ooh, not been to Morrisons in ages, will have to go check it out. Though I don't like chocolate orange.
Can't stand those Nakd bars, no no no!

Please, ask away. I will do my very best to help. Are you on Fb? There are loads of support groups on there, so you can get opinions other than mine! :)

Will he read the book? I think it is a short read. Or show him Earthlings, and Forks Over Knives.

I believe much of the fish people eat is farmed, and those that are pulled from the ocean, it is a devastating industry that is wrecking our ocean and the whole planet. Though for me, it doesn't matter how lovely and free a life they may or may not have had, I am against the needless slaughter full stop.

Chaotic, a warm welcome to you. How is Veganuary going for you? I think it's great you have joined the Fb groups. Even though I have been vegan for ages, I still find being updated with vegan posts very supportive, knowing that we are not the only ones. When in real life, it often feels like it. Though vegan numbers are growing, and will continue to grow.
How old are your DC? You can find so many replacements for so many things, they may not even notice you are feeding them vegan chicken nuggets! (Holland and Barrett stock loads of amazing faux 'meats')

I hope someone reads the Gary Francione book, I wanna know if it's any good! :)

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 05/01/2014 13:32

DCs are 3 and 5. I do actually suspect that my 3yo may be sensitive to dairy - he always has sore patches around his mouth and (sorry for TMI) a sore bottom. He's not in nappies and hasn't been for 18 months - it's not nappy rash type of sore, but I won't go into further details Wink

As a result I have started to limit dairy this week to see if it helps. I couldn't go cold turkey on dairy for him so decided to reduce it gradually. Soya milk in cereal goes down fine sometimes and then sometimes he leaves it. The alpro chocolate drinks go down well though :)

Veganuary is going really well, thanks for asking. I am not finding it anywhere near as difficult as I had thought I would! I'm used to soya milk in tea now and have not missed cheese like I thought I would. I know my biggest challenge will be to ensure I am prepared for work as there'll be little to nothing in the way of lunch options where I work if I forget or don't have time to make something. I am roasting a load of veg at the moment actually so that at least I have that in the fridge. That along with ryvitas, hummus and veg stick and I don't think I'll go too far wrong :)

Had my first disaster on Friday though. Went to a thai place with a friend and rang before hand to ask what was suitable for me to eat as I didn't want my friend grilling me over my decision. All went well, until the dish I was told would be fine, arrived with egg on it! I didn't notice until I took a mouthful and then realised instantly :( It was swiftly exchanged but I had little trust in them after that so didn't really eat it. I am going to a local pub this Friday and have NO idea what I'm going to be able to eat

ButICantaloupe · 05/01/2014 14:46

MyLife falafels with hummus in pitta bread is lovely for lunch Smile and its easy to make in advance.

LinzerTorte · 05/01/2014 16:42

Hello all, I've been meaning to post on this thread for ages - you pointed me in its direction months ago, Ironing Smile - as I'm another vegetarian trying to become a vegan.

I'm 90% vegan at home (still eating Cadbury's and chocolate hobnobs as I have a huge stockpile from visits back to the UK, but won't be replacing them) but not doing quite as well when I'm out and about. My main downfall is coffee; I don't mind soy milk in tea, but I've tried all kinds of non-dairy milk in coffee as well as drinking it black and haven't found any that I like. Has anyone tried Koko Dairy Free? It claims to be very similar in taste to semi-skimmed milk, although having googled it, it appears to be 95% water with a dash of coconut Hmm so I thought I could have a go at making my own. Actually, coconut is one of the few milks I haven't tried yet - not in coffee, at any rate.

DH, DD1 and DD2 all eat meat if we're out/if DH cooks at the weekend, although he's just announced that he's made a New Year's resolution to only eat meat once a week. DS has been a vegetarian for a couple of months now after seeing a picture of a hog roast in the local newspaper and getting very upset, as he loves his pig soft toys!

OhTheIroning · 05/01/2014 23:17

Hi, Chaotic. I do believe we are all sensitive to dairy, and humans really shouldn't be consuming the milk of another species. What other species drinks milk past infancy? Some of us tolerate it better than others, but I think everyone would be healthier without it. It makes us lethargic, more prone to colds, more mucousy. And it is bad for our bones. I hope you notice a positive difference in your 3yo as you reduce dairy. Alpro chocolate, ha, that stuff is awesome! :) They do yoghurts too, which my 3yo loves.

Glad Veganuary is going well for you. Accidents at restaurants happen to all of us unless we eat out at vegan restaurants. I scrupulously check things before I eat. Though really, I don't eat out much, but this isn't really to do with my veganism. Pub food, I have never ever been a fan of. But good luck! :)

Linzer, hello! How lovely to see you here! And well done on working out who I am! :) 90% at home is a great start. My husband says don't make your coffee too hot, or slowly add the hot coffee to the mylk and keep stirring. If it starts curdling, it is cooked, because the coffee is too hot. I don't drink coffee so no advice from me, but that's his input. Have tried Koko chocolate, it's lovely. Do you get Alpro where you are? We find that the best for everything. We do also have other mylks just to vary it up and not have soya so much, but soya is preferred by all of us in this home.
And how awesome of your DS, well done him! Maybe the others will follow suit!

For everyone aiming to be vegan, this post may help. I have only skimmed it as I've been busy this evening, but my quick glance says it's worth a read: veganrabbit.com/2012/12/31/why-vegan-diets-fail/.

ButICantaloupe · 06/01/2014 20:24

I'm doing veganuary, just ate something that had milk in it without realising. I feel like I'm cheating if I continue! I really didn't expect garlic purée to have milk in it.. Angry

Please tell me everyone else makes these mistakes?!

On the other hand I made a lovely tadka dal for dinner, yum!

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 06/01/2014 21:02

Well he went back to nursery today OhTheIroning as well as the childminders. I did mention to the CMs that I had reduced dairy but other than his lunch they didn't tell me what he had to eat and drink. I do know however that he had a bottle of milk at nursery, whom I had not told as I had not seen them myself and didn't think to ask the CMs to pass the message on. It may be a coincidence but his face was really sore again at teatime tonight, so I am considering going cold turkey altogether.

My opinion is, don't give yourself a hard time ButICantaloupe - you would expect to learn things over time in any other situation you weren't familiar with so chalk it up to a lesson learnt and carry on. You aren't cheating by continuing :)

ButICantaloupe · 06/01/2014 21:09

Thank you, MyLife I hope I'm not. It was a genuine mistake! Grr, I. So annoyed with myself.

OhTheIroning · 06/01/2014 21:15

Cantaloupe, be kind to yourself. It is a huge learning curve. You are doing absolutely brilliantly even giving it a go, millions just don't care. So well done. And yes, millions of vegans consume animal products inadvertently. Best to carry on trying. There is a fairly steep learning curve to start with, there are animal ingredients in lots of things. Unless it's marked vegan, or we know officially from the company, then there could be non-vegan things in all sorts of products. Best to cook from scratch, which is better for us anyway.
We are very strict, I prefer it this way.
Do you know what to look out for in ingredient lists?

Chaotic, from my non-professional viewpoint, I would say it is worth giving up the dairy with your son, and see how it goes. We truly don't need dairy - I haven't had it in 14 years, my three year old hasn't ever had it, and we are well. He hasn't ever had a cold, in his entire life. And I haven't had a cold since I gave up dairy, and my hayfever pretty much disappeared too.
