How do I use less water?

We've just moved house and will be getting a water meter. I don't think we waste that much water but obviously we want to be as efficient as possible now.

Any tips?

Yes, go look at the MN guide to saving water by me on youtube (Mumsnet channel)

I shall take a look, thank you. In the meantime, if anyone else has any other suggestions...

I put a 2 litre bottlee of water in each of our loo systems, so that the flush is smaller. I also wash with ecoballs, as you don't need to rinse at all. I just stop the machine after it has washed, and then do a spin - saves loads of water and power!

You can get a free Hippo for each loo (or bricks or bottles).
An efficient dishwasher uses less than washing-up I am told (and don't anyone tell me otherwise please because I long for a dishwasher Grin)
Get a water butt or three for gardening use
You could think about a grey-water diversion scheme if you're really keen but I'm not sure how you then argue the waste water charges etc with the water company.
Only wash (dishes and clothes) on a proper load.
Take showers and don't leave taps running.

I can't think of any more. Off to watch WWMC on t'telly . Oh, embrace a dirty car Grin

  • don't flush every time you use the loo
  • get a dishwasher, ours use 7 liters per run (by the time the water comes out hot I used much more for that)
  • use used water to water plants. for example the last gluck from the kettle or cleaning water if you don't use harsh chemicals
  • reduce washing, only wash what needs washing, sometimes airing a shirt will do
  • use the eco mode of your washer
  • instead of prewashing soak stained items in a bucket and put the water into the mashine as well
