Would you ever do a meatless Monday?

Just spotted this: Cut down on meat to lose weight, save money and lower your carbon footprint...www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-1072641

OP posts:

Yup. We only eat meat about 2-3 times per week, and a big part of that is the environment.

MathsMadMummy · 29/07/2010 16:48

not necessarily Mondays (not organised enough to have a specific day!) but yes, DH and I decided to reduce the meat we eat, for these reasons (in priority order!)

  1. save money
  2. better for health
  3. environment

but we don't just do it by having more meat free meals, we've also got better at dividing up larger packs of meat before freezing, and in things like stews we now add a can of pulses in instead, as that's also good for fibre etc.

Three out of four of us are veggie, so we do meatless everyday! Dp is not veggie but rarely eats meat or fish at home.

We eat meat maybe twice a week (although sometimes this is a chicken stretched over a couple of meals). I was veggie for a long time and now like to buy only good quality meat, which we obviously can't afford to eat every day.

Environmental reasons are part of it too - can't imagine eating meat every day!

BelligerentGhoul · 29/07/2010 17:04

Quick hi-jack, sorry OP.

Riven - am I right in thinking that you cook lots of Indian veggie food? If so, can I pick your brains for a minute please?

yup, veggie here too

TrillianAstra · 29/07/2010 17:19

Would I ever? Yes, I might.
Do I? No.
Why not? Dunno. Cant be bothered really. My mindset to cooking is such that all the regular easy things I cook have meat in them, so a veggie night would take more effort.

Clockface · 29/07/2010 17:20

Yes, absolutely. Pasta and risotto veggie dishes all the way.

TrillianAstra · 29/07/2010 17:23

But pasta (and risotto) is better with chorizo. This is why there are very few Spanish vegetarians, IMO.

Spanish spicy cured sausage.

BelligerentGhoul · 29/07/2010 17:36

Okay - picking beginning....

You know dosas, those yummy pancakey things? They are usually served with a sort of curried gravy sort of thing and I would love to know how to make it - any ideas?

mrspear · 29/07/2010 17:39

With my DH? Never - A meal is not a meal without meat / fish

nagoo · 29/07/2010 17:48

I have started to do a 'more veg' menu, even though I rarely cook totally meat free, si eg I'll put brocolli and cauilflower in my curry, or loads of veg in my pasta sauce, and that way we are probably eating half the meat we used to.

Does that count?

muggglewump · 29/07/2010 17:53

Yes, we often eat veggie and vegan meals.
I don't think of food as containing meat or not, just as food we enjoy.

Some of the meals we do have which have meat in, aren't necessarily meat heavy, it may be something like a carbonara, which doesn't have much meat (relatively), or a home made pizza with a few anchovies.

Tonight we're having a veggie meal.
